While running laps in Port Oakes, beatin' on Family, I came upon this. I don't recall seeing it before. It appears to be CoT in origin, but it's in the street (location: -945.9 63.5 -597.6 just South of the building we pay rent) where a manhole cover should be, and it is the only one I could locate. So, anyone know what this is or if it's just a zone decor item I've somehow missed for four and a half years?

Oh, and if you do know what it is, please toss in a link so I (and others) can read up on it too.

Update, for anyone else who's curious about this little item.

I've killed mobs near it, no effect.

Can't click on it, and cannot target it.

It is more noticable at night, but doesn't seem to actually "glow" though that could also be a product of video settings.

It may indeed just be a zone decoration, but I'm truly surprised I don't ever recall seeing it before.

My network at work blocks photobucket

I'm very familiar with the vill zones, and I don't know what half of the Hero zones even look like lol. I'll check it out later.

My first thought it to check around and see if the symbol appears anywhere other than Orenbegan architecture.

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

I think it's a magical seal to maintain the bind holding Bat'Zul: I found another larger one near the north end of Cap Au Diable near the PTS transfer station where you would find the Gremlins.

To the best of my knowledge, I've only seen designs like this in Oran maps, in Nerva out near the Thorn Tree, and by a couple isolated mission doors in the Hollows. In each case, the symbols are clearly linked to CoT in some fashion or another, but this is in the middle of an intersection in Port Oakes. If you exit the Arachnos headquarters building, where we pay base rent, and turn to face due south you should be able to see the intersection. Hovering over the intersection or just walking around it, the symbol is easy to find. It's about the size of a manhole cover and sticks out in a way that makes me think "There's no way I've been running these streets all these years working on the Gangbuster badge without noticing this before." It sure has me stumpted, for now.

An interesting idea, but that raises two questions in my mind.

1. Has it been there since launch?

2. Why have one in PO for a demon locked up in Cap?

We cannot definitively answer either question yet, but I will go to Cap and look into this other symbol you located previously.

There's a lot of storyline on Redside that isn't fully explored and has been dropped HARD on the backburner, if not shelved completely.

This could be part of a larger storyline, perhaps dealing with the Blood of the Black Stream, perhaps with the Bat'Zul, or even part of something dealing with Fort Hades.

Frankly, Major T's theory about it having to do with Bat'Zul makes the most sense to me, since Port Oakes and Cap Au Diable are on the same island. It's probably a bit of an extra mystical reinforcement on the infernal prison.

Because Port Oaks and Cap au Diable are on the same Island.

Of course, it could just be where someone screwed up.

Except it's too singular to be just a tiling error. It seems to have been set specifically for that spot.

Following T's tip, I went to Cap looking for this symbol, I found five of them, set into rocky areas just north of the University. You can find them where you see the swirling white lights along cliff faces.

So, now I'm more inclinded to believe there is some story related connection here. It could be a left over from some plotline never fully developed, or just an obscure element to an existing plotline that I've missed while playing red side.

Ultimately, I do not think we can determine exactly when the symbol was in that location in PO. Regardless, it was an entertaining little mystery, and remains unsolved for now. Maybe the Devs and time will reveal more information about these symbols and the dancing white lights that often accompany them... I wonder... are the lights in Cap and Nerva connected somehow to the dancing white lights found in The Hollows?

Was it Manticore that had a thread for answering questions about CoH Lore? This might be something to ask him?

Thanks for the suggestion Oz, I've taken this question to Manti's lore thread. We'll see what, if anything, is revealed there.
