thermal if you like recasting sheilds every few minutes, no debuffs till late levels though.
Pain is way better for survival, even though therm has a heal too.
I'd say /DM personally, but if it's between /pain and /therm, I'd go /pain.
I have a lowbie Mercs/Therm at the moment, and I think it's fairly solid. I don't find recasting the shields to be a problem, and they add to the mercs' decent s/l resistance.
In a team setting, Forge provides stronger buffs than World of Pain, but for fewer targets. Heat Exhaustion and Melt Armor can wreck tough enemies, though.
Plus, you could make the soldiers run around screming "It burns!"
/Dark and /storm should work well. And in the latter case, you can make all sorts of Stormtrooper jokes.

Ok, so, let me give you some extremely good secondaries Traps aside
/Pain
/Dark
/Storm
Those three (Storm being the lrgest headache) synergize well with Mercenaries. You can't go wrong with any of those choices.
(As per mentioned, Thermal goes great as well)
