Defense/Resist ---Very important
Toon Usage == Teams/TF's. Not looking for a farmer
Balance between Damage and Recharge....

For your sets remember that with Invuln you want TYPED defense bonuses, not positional ones, and S/L defense is what you'll want first and foremost. Single target attacks will use Smashing Haymaker or if you've the inf Kinetic Combat. Slot your armors with 4 Reactive Armor pieces... all of the ones that have resistance. Ranged attacks like Impale work well with the full Thunderstrike set and grant decent E/N defense.
Your AOE's are a bit tricky since there's not a lot of choice for typed defenses... you can 3 slot Eradication for bonus endurance and a nice 3.13% E/N defense; the rest you could fill out from other sets. S/L defense is hard to come by in AOE sets... the only one that comes to mind is Obliteration for 6 slots... it's primarily positional but it does grant 1.88% S/L defense.
You can get three sets of Doctored Wounds into Recon, Dull Pain & Instant Healing for a 15% recharge bonus... slotting 5 of them is all you'll need; that will save you a slot in Recon & Dull Pain for other things.
Obviously if you're going for durability you want Boxing/Tough/Weave. Tough is another place for Reactive Armor (assuming you're skipping Resist Elements... which I would recommend) and Weave can slot several things; Gift of the Ancients for bonus endurance and recovery is probably your best choice.
I look at defenses like this:
First and most important is S/L; it applies to the vast majority of enemy attacks.
Second, E/N defense... most E/N also have S/L components but there's a fair amount of pure E/N attacks that require this type of defense.
Third, and least important are F/C defenses... very few mobs use pure fire/cold attacks, and the ones that do generally don't hit very hard. Therefore this type is low priority.

I have an Elect/Inv/Body build that ports pretty straight forward to Spines.
The design goals were 60% Rech for pseudo-perma DP, 37% S/L Def (soft cap with 8 in range for Invinc), 250% Reg and at least 2.5 END/s surplus over toggles.
You'd need to reorder powers for Spines. The only set that really has to be replaced is the Chain Induction slotting with whatever you put in Impale. Decimations for the +Rech might be a good swap. END use might require swapping the Oblits out of Quills. Maybe 3 Eradications and 3 Cleaving Blows for some E/N Def. The Kismet in CJ turned out to be a bit of overkill with the 6 9% Acc bonuses and Invincibility. Oh, the FF +Rech proc won't go in Throw Spines, but it's not a big deal anyway. Even a Range IO would probably be fine there. The 2 Hecatombs in Charged Brawl were added in place of a Mako proc and CI A/D/E to get the DPS up high enough to overcome AV Regen. Though even with that this build isn't going to be solo'ing Pylons or anything. It's a pretty costly build too, as even without the Hecas it was around 900M.

Here's a claw/inv build i've been mucking around with. My suggestion is to try to include the body epic for survival, or, if you don't mind redraw and want more aoe dmg, use blaze.
In the body epic, physical perfection was added, which is additional regen and recovery. In this build, i put the miracle +end proc there, and slotted end mod, to give the proc some boost as well.
Edit: i know you're looking at spines/inv, but maybe this will help you out. The trick with spines is the lack of single-target attacks in which to slot kinetic combats. I've seen some builds 4slot brawl for that purpose.

How important is S/L defense, when you have a high resist to both. I have posted a build below that has almost capped E/N/F/C but only high 20's for S/L and 71% Resist to both. Would that work or am I going to be disappointed?

Higher s/l defense will make you *extremely* survivable against smash/lethal, which is often valuable. Also, a significant percentage of defense debuffs are linked to s/l attacks. With invuln's limited def debuff resistance, it's pretty important to keep the def you have.

I have searched this forum and can't seem to find slotting/builds for a spine/inv.... I have had this toon a very long time and would like to re-kindle it. I have been through many nerfs with it.
I don't really want to use purples but most all other IOs are open.
