Hero - Creating a mage style character - Powerset?
Welcome to the game and forums. This seems to be a particularly hot topic recently. Check out this thread for a nearly identical discussion:

Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.
"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."

Welcome to the game and the forums!
Blaster (I heard they sucked at soloing later though? Is that true? I heard good at first, but die tons later. Thats my only worry with this class, otherwise they would probably be my top choice)
Controllers (these look like fun, and would be my 2nd choice, unless Blasters are no good solo) |
Blasters running solo... is a different story. This depends way too much on the powersets. Ice and electric blasters can solo very easily because they have lots of control options. My Assault Rifle blaster solos well too. A fire blaster could have some trouble.
Controllers are another animal. These guys seem terribly slow to level until the level 32 pets that you get (level 18 for illusion). After that, the game is a joyride.
Blaster or Controller?
Pain later or pain now?
Defenders: This may come as a surprise to you, but the most powerful teams in CoH are all defender teams. If you're going to solo, make sure you take sonic blast. Sonic debuffs resistance, and since defender damage is low, but debuff is high, sonic is your best choice for doing damage.
Also, keep in mind the power customization. I've seen dark armor colored to be sand armor. I've seen radiation blast colored to look like water. I've seen electric blast colored white to look like web blast. You can make anything look like almost anything else.
Where to now?

Yes. You can make a Hero-side character that is totally dark and demonic. There are several options for Horns and even a devil tail. Throw in the a pair of hoofed (sp?) feet and it's Go-Time.
As for power sets, a recent issue gave us power customization that allows for recoloring of effects. This in turn allows you to have the look you want AND the power you want. It's a great quality of life feature.
If you want a power thats ready to go from the start, a Dark/Dark defender would fit the bill. The build has great survivability and is very easy to solo. (prior to level 12 or so, it is more difficult, but this can be said for most builds)
On your red/black color scheme, you can always recolor, or select a fire using power set.
Best of luck.

Here's the post I made in another identical thread!
Pretty much any class can work as a mage if you use the right powers. But in my opinion, a mage is a squishy type person who uses abilities from far away (or can but doesn't always) and has a variety of spells to use. So I'd recommend:
1) Dominator - Doms do pretty high damage; some of the best in the game actually. But they're really squishy and easy to kill if they don't handle their control. Their sets are control/assault, which means their primary is devoted to mezzes and control while their secondary is a mix of melee and ranged attacks. They're redside (villains) and almost always have pets.
2) Controller - Controllers do very little damage until high levels, but they do have all sorts of neat abilities. You can play Controller as a sort of support mage who exists to help out friends rather than directly destroy things. Controllers are blueside (heroes) and have control/buff, meaning their primary job is to control enemies by locking them down and preventing them from attacking, and their secondary role is to buff and debuff to support a team and themselves. Controllers almost always have pets.
3) Defender/Corruptor - These two are a lot alike. Defenders are blueside, Corruptors redside. Both have ranged attacks and buffs/debuffs, just Defenders are more buff/debuff oriented and Corruptors are more damage oriented. You get blast attacks with some secondary debuff effects built in as well as a set of buffs and debuffs to support your friends and teammates.
4) Blaster - Blueside toon. Blasters are pure damage. They have ranged and melee attacks, as well as some self-buff powers. Blasters are pretty much the best flat-out damage dealers in the game and tend to get a variety of different attack types. Blasters will often also have debuffs and other secondary effects in their powers, and some even have other special abilities like Sonic's mass sleep or Ice's ice patch. As a mage, Blasters are much more straight-forward and mostly focused on dealing damage with less emphasis on the side-stuff that the others listed above have.
Hopefully some of that helps. And welcome to the game!
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

So, I'm creating a mage style character on Hero side. I'm brand new to CoH...now I want to create more or less an "evil" character (well evil looking)...and don't want to play villain side, because I tried them and it was all dark and gloomy and the area was dirty looking...made me depressed
I definitely like the Heroes side more. Still want to create an evil looking character though...
if its possible on the hero side, maybe one that looks like a demon or something? I'm still patching the game, so I can't see whats available. If its possible to make a demon looking character on the heroes side, I'll probably make my powers all a mix of black/red colors...a mix maybe.
So on to the point...if the costume works, I would create a mage style character, that looks like a demon.
A lot of my time is spent soloing, I say 90%, that isn't to say I don't group...but my playtime is off/on all the time. I don't like to be the one in the group that after 5-10 min I keep going afk, or needing to log off.
So, my choices of classes appear to be:
Blaster (I heard they sucked at soloing later though? Is that true? I heard good at first, but die tons later. Thats my only worry with this class, otherwise they would probably be my top choice)
Controllers (these look like fun, and would be my 2nd choice, unless Blasters are no good solo)
Defender (I think more of a support class though? And, not sure if I can create a demon style powerset with Defender)
looking at the villain side, it would probably be easier to create a demon style character there...but heh, I'm not big on the way their areas look. Remind me of the dark gloomy zones in WoW, which were my least favorite zones in the game.
Well, thanks for any help
