Some new bits and pieces

It seems like aaaaages since I filled up my DA account with piles of CoH sketches. At some point it seemed like a good idea to clear out almost everything from the gallery and rejig the pages - but after time enough for civilizations to rise and fall I have, at last, started doodling again and here are a couple of pieces of my stinky controller, Doctor Bindweed:

I've also started taking on some commissions, and recently I did a bunch for a fellow SG member. I like this one because it's so uncluttered and seems pretty seasonal :

At the moment, the few pieces in the gallery are plain ol' black-and-white, ink-on-paper things. But on Thursday I got my grubby mitts on Photoshop CS2, so Living Color, here I come...!

Very nice work... Can't wait to see more!

(Seriously... I am not waiting! I am peeking through your gallery as I type!)

Why thankee kindly!

It's just a teeny tiny gallery at the moment, since I cleared out a great big pile of stuff last year, so it won't take long to browse

That inked comic cover is kickass. Hope to be seeing more of your work here soon.

Yep, so I see But at least everything in it is quality!

My humble suggestion for if you're looking to take commissions from outside (err, dA at large I guess I mean) is to get a bigger gallery! I'd seriously be personally hesitant to hire someone with such a small portfolio... Well, unless you were ultra dirt cheap, then I might take a chance that those aren't just the absolute best of the past X years

But really, everything in there is pretty solid.

Absolutely. It's something I'm very concious of, and trying to remedy by uploading at least a couple of new pieces every week. The smallness is, in fact, down to me taking out the creaky antique stuff and the sloppy sketches. I was sure I had some CoH stuff knocking about somewhere, but that's disappeared into the digital void.

I have chronic altitis, which for these purposes comes in handy: I can use 30-odd CoX characters as subject matter for quite a while, I guess

Hey, awesome stuff. Don't forget to join the CoH Group on dA too and cross-post your work there!

Or build some goodwill and offer some art to the artless I wouldn't suggest going overboard on it but some couldn't hurt...

But my real, second piece of unsolicited advice would be to throw up a journal with some prices... Probably not everyone is like me but personally I loathe the "send note for prices" crap. I don't think I've done that once. If I cannot see a price (or at least a ballpark price) for the work, I move on.

Sound advice, which I'm happy to act upon.

And, since you suggested it, feel free to drop me a link/screenie and I'll freebie you up

Appreciated but as I said, give to the artless... or at least those with less developed galleries than mine You'll get my business soon enough I imagine. (My self imposed withdrawal from buying commissions is a temporary thing.)

In that case, I throw the offer out to any passer-by who has a character they'd like to see done!

(...as long as they're not too ugly or difficult, though... the toon, that is... )

Welcome aboard Bindweed that is some nice clean art you got there and
I plan to browse through the rest of your gallery as soon as I get some free time.

I would suggest that if you are taking commissions that you drop a PM to Thors Assassin
and get your name in "The Network" which is the stickied thread that lists all the local artists taking commissions.

Many people that want to hire someone who knows the CoX games (and who won't say "what's a controller?")
look to this thread as the short list of who's taking commissions that will "understand" my hero. Represent yo!

P.S. You'll get to put your name out there and also get to link to 3 pieces that you feel best showcase your talents to customers.

P.P.S. If you are looking for someone to draw yet feel free to have a go at Xllusya my Illusion/Empathy controller.
And once again welcome back to the best part of the forums.

D'oh!

How did I forget to mention the Network???

Another tactic for getting customers is to comment on a lot of DA pages, favorite lots of pics, etc... I know I almost always check out the page of someone who adds me to their watch or who comments on a piece of mine... And that curiosity has put more than a dew artists on my radar

And I knew you'd get volunteers... I'm shocked there aren't more. Free art is usually a siren call around here...

And since I did mention it I wanna say a bit more on it... My first mention of it was at least partly tongue in cheek but I think there is benefit to the occasional free art. 1, it is obviously good public relations and helps tie you into the community... Many people like to go with local artists when possible and this helps make you local even if your not very vocal in the day to day banter and such on this board. 2, it also ties into building the gallery but also demonstrates you can put in the work even if it's not a character you love...

Non of that is neccessary but I do think it can help someone just breaking into commissions or just breaking into a new market... But don't go overboard on freebies or you'll kill your market

and one last bit of advice (for now at least) - make sure you have males in your gallery! I've skipped past several artists when deciding who to hire because all they had in their gallery was T&A shots... Don't get me wrong, I like me a good T&A shot... But when I am looking to have my males characters drawn I like to know the artist can do more than that...

Thanks, everyone!

OK, so that's Angel Red, Plutonium Bloom, VexXxa, Xllusa, plus Feral Kat/Kitty by way of DA - plus a couple of male heroes (I'm thinking possibly Cindersnap and Tower of Power, if Zortel and Ghostie are reading this, since you both asked before anyone else ) and that's more than half a dozen subjects now, so, for the time being, I'll stop taken suggestions for characters to draw.

Thanks for the encouragement, advice and feedback! I have a bedroom to decorate this week, so progress will be slowed, somewhat, for a while. But there should be a start next week.

LoL, I just hope you don't feel like I suggested you do them all... I was thinking maybe just choosing one or two!

But hey, more power to ya!! . And good luck on the decorating. Personally I throw in a matress, boxspring, some sheets, pillows and blanket and call it done. Everything else is just unneccessary frilliness.

Must be going senile in your old age?

@ Bindweed: It's "Xllusya" with a y.
It's an alliterated version of "Illusion"... tricky spelling but hey she's like a goddess and stuffz so yeah it's par for the course.
