Yes, the movie like so many of James Cameron's films was shamefully emotionally manipulative (thinking of frozen, floating babies in Titanic), but it worked so incredibly well I totally forgave him for it. Grown men and boys were in tears in my row. There was a particular sequence that was highly evocative of the terrorist attack of 911 that literally had me clutching my chest. I knew I was being totally emotionally manipulated, but I was loving it!!! Well played Mr. Cameron... Well played. |
I'd say Cameron is the best director out there, if his films can all do that, as well as be visually stunning.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.
Isn't that a movie's job? To tug at heartstrings and get an emotional response of some sort? Aren't we supposed to care about the characters enough to laugh when they tell a joke, or cry when something bad happens to them, or cheer when the nerd finally gets the girl?

Think of a salesman who appears to just be there to help, who seems like they're just trying to assist you, but are of course guiding you towards a sale.
Then think of the stereotypical car salesman with the loud tie who breaks out in a fake grin and salivates the second you walk in the door.
They're doing the same job. You just don't mind one of them quite so much where the other one is vaguely insulting.
Last post in the thread, but that's freaky. Hats off Mr. Cameron.
"LOS ANGELES, Jan 24 (Reuters) - "Titanic" just hit an iceberg named "Avatar."
James Cameron's sci-fi spectacular replaced his maritime melodrama as the biggest international release of all time during the weekend and is on the verge of claiming its worldwide crown, which also includes North American receipts, distributor 20th Century Fox said on Sunday.
The News Corp (NWSA.O)-owned studio said "Avatar" has sold $1.841 billion worth of tickets worldwide during its unbroken six-week reign, and was a day or so away from surpassing the seemingly insurmountable $1.843 billion racked up by "Titanic" in 1997-1998."
Just got back from seeing this with my sister.
Phenomenal. Story is fairly predictable, but eff my ay its a stunning movie. Would recommend seeing it in 3d because while the glasses were a little uncomfortable it really, really adds to the enjoyment of the movie. And if I can see it in 3d in Switzerland people in the States have no excuse Shame my date didn't put out, but hey, thats life right? |
Um....gross?
Anyhoo. Last I heard they were less than 2 mil from beating Titanic. Well Done!!!
I finial got the chance to see this yesterday (sunday). I really liked it alot, and my 5 year old daughter was doing the "YES" arm jesters and getting excited about the movie. I have also been told that she wants it for home as well.
