enjoy.
It takes a lot of cash and time but you can get a fire tank to the s/l softcap. Yes they can still make a decent tank. I've got one that is currently sitting at 18% defense to s/l and 70% resist s/l. Eventually he'll be sitting over 30% def. s/l. He does fine in most situations. Getting Tough and Weave has helped him tremendously.

Heres my 1st attempt to build a fire/fire tank. I wanted to use the quicksand and burn method. I was trying to get 2 burns for 1 quicksand use. Maybe I just use the Energy Mastery. Also was trying to keep cost down and use the things that aren't hard to find. Please tell my what you thing. What I need to change or just start over again.
I want to thx Rangle M for pointing my the right direction. The info was great!

First off I noticed you don't have any kb protection. Get the steadfast -kb or the karma -kb protection as early as possible. Combat jumping uses so little end it's really better to single slot it with defense, or double slot it for a specific set bonus. (like two GotA, or two LotG with one being the recharge). Heck, put that karma -kb in Combat Jumping.

Besides KB Protection, you're probably going to want to pick up Taunt. You can Tank okay without it, but it helps a lot while tanking, and is particularly useful when fighting AVs. The shorten range aspect of it is nice, too, as a lot of mobs like to stay at range, and Taunt tends to make them come in close.
I would also recommend picking up Temperature Protection at some point: if you stack it with the Winter's Gift -slow IO, you can get up to 40% slow resists, which is nice once you have other aspects of your build rounded out.
The defense levels you're at work okay... I managed to get mine at about 22% to melee/AOE/ranged/psychic, which makes his performance pretty consistent no matter what he's facing. Going for high levels of Smash/Lethal can be more helpful against particular mobs (especially if you like running through the ITF), but it's not necessarily more consistent.
I would, however, try to get more +recharge in there. The higher you get that, the quicker Healing Flames is up (and of course, your damage).
Also your call on Burn. What type of hero does your wife play? If she has decent Immobilize powers, then it will be a great pickup (if you play together all the time, or most of the time). If not... I get more mileage out of using my other powers, going for Fireball, etc.
Ugh, I really need to get my Fire/Fire guide done... I answer pretty much all these issues/questions in there. I'll toss in my tanking build for you to see. Take from it what you wish. I'm in the process of dropping Multi-Strikes from Fire Sword Circle to Obliteration for a bit more recharge, +damage, and +accuracy. Bit expensive, though, so I've been working at it slowly.

I'll also include a copy of the build I'm working towards as an example of going in a different direction. In the end you need to find what works for you. Right now all of his primary powers are IO'd and a large portion of his secondary and pool/epics are also finished. (The Oblits and Kinetic Combats are slow/expensive to come by.) I've chosen not to go with burn nor taunt and it's worked out well so far, but as always YMMV. Even currently with s/l defenses around 18 he does quite well. By no means is this the best possible build out there, but it is an example of something that's working for me and my play style and is a lot sturdier then my first build of this tank.
(FYI the level of the IO's shown don't truely reflect the lvls that are in the build. Most of them are lvl 35+ with the exception of the steadfast -kb which is around lvl 14 I think. I just haven't taken the time to adjust the individual IO's to their current lvls.)

Heres my updated build... took your guys advice...should have enough knockback and end/reg . Had to use converse energy from the energy mastery pool along with personal perfection to get the eng/reg and reg itself to get respectable numbers. Seems it be balanced and no purples were used. Still costly but, doable. When my wife and I team she has such a variety of toons, its seems best to drop the burn and go in a different direction. thx again for the advice.

A few more notes: Take a look at Multistrike in Blazing Aura over Obliteration. Oblits have a little better/different set bonus, but the Multistrikes will save you a huge amount of endurance. Again, its up to you. I hope you've gotten a lower lvl -kb IO if you plan on exemping down. If I recall correctly the IO bonus won't work if it's more then 3 lvls above your level when you exemp down.
If you're not aware of this you should try and get these four accolades if you don't have them: The Atlas Medallion, Freedom Phalanx Reserve, Task Force Commander and Portal Jockey. They'll give you an additional 20% to your HP and 10% to your Endurance totals, automatically increasing your regen. and recovery numbers since those are based on your HP/End totals. You can see how they effect things by enabling them under the hero accolades in Mids.
Have fun with the updated tank!

Also, Plasma Shield, Fire Shield, and Weave are way overslotted, IMO. Each would do fine with just four slots, and I don't think getting that small amount of Psi resistance is worth an additional 6 slots.

Hi...do fire/fire tanks still make a decent tank? I had an old old school tank in the early days of the game, before the nerfed burn and alot of the the powers.(what a killing machine) I've been playing with fire/fire builds with mixed results. My wife and I do team together and I do like to solo missions
Any ideas on builds for these tanks. You just can't BBQ the ******* like you use to do.
Thx for your help and listening to the rants of an old man. dwhead
