3rd Annual Mr. and Ms. Paragon City/Rogue Isles Costume Contest
Zek, that's one of the reasons I like flickr over photobucket, they give you size options. And using the thumbnail setup, you can post a medium size image as a thumbnail and have it click to a larger image.
Well, the only times I could possible participate, would be for the Female Villain. |

Let me ask our computer tech the reason why it has to be 100k, it could be the reason that she hosts that site herself... But let me double check Zek.
Even if she does, photobucket = html links

Ok, this is from our computer tech Zek.
100k (actually =~ 120kb, give or take depending on connection) is how much the perl library I'm using can eat in a single chunk when using the form submission. I can re-write the script to use a different module and use buffering, but it's both more complex. Also, and equally important, that makes people actually trim the screenshots instead of sending a 1 Mb JPEG with the character taking maybe 10% of it (the main reason why I though the 100 Kb-ish limit was enough). The reason they can't put a link instead of uploading a file is because I can't use wget (or similar) in the new hosting place - commercial hosting companies that don't charge an arm and a leg have dim views of scripts that remote dowload stuff automatically. In the last year you could paste a link and my home server would download the picture no problem. That said, both limitations can be easily circumvented by firing off an email to perc.coh@gmail.com and having me doing the legwork. |
Okaaaaaaay..... >_> that made very, very little sense to me. If I have a *link* to a photobucket image, it can be used as html for any display purposes, and a link doesn't have to be *viewed* as a picture... I guess that's the problem, that the form they're using is only able to take an image instead of a link?
In general I'd recommend upgrading that service, if you cannot actually use a link... that makes *no* sense to me at all. What kind of host doesn't allow of-site links from places designed for it? weird.
Anyway, I'll see about sending images if I win

I'm guessing its because that particular host is trying to be careful of script kiddies who will create scripts and use em for nefarious purposes. A side effect of that is not allowing scripts/utilities for legitimate reasons - they just don't want to open that particular can of worms.

So it's not like I can't save the link somewhere in a text file, that's trivial. The thing is that I can't make the webserver follow that link and download the image to put it somewhere in our repository - the image itself. It's an understandable limitation when it comes to security for a commercial web provider. I could do this with my own home webserver, but its reliability proved not to be as good after I moved to New Zealand (I'm out in the woods here, so the DSL I get is pretty crappy ).
So, at that point, it's much better that, if someone has trouble adjusting to the size limit, to just send an e-mail with either the link or the oversized screenshot, because there's several eyes monitoring that e-mail address and it'll be a lot easier to track, whereas it'd be more of a headache to monitor the webserver and see who sent a real screenie and who sent a link. Then we can manually put it with the other screenies.
