War Mace/Shield Defense

Just looking around at how a lot of people are building brutes. I see quite a few NOT finishing set bonuses and sticking Hamidon type enhancements in random places.

Just like to know if anyone sees where I could improve or am going wrong in how I like to build brutes..here is one of my many /shield builds.

Well Im no expert but things looks good....

I have a problem with a couple of things...

Youre overslotted on defenses....45% is the soft cap....everything over that is nice but not neccessary

I would put a 5 set Sciroccos and the force feedback proc in one of your aoes for the recharge....

If you can afford it more LotGs +7.5% please....

Move the Steadfast +Def to Deflection where it does more good and is available earlier in case you malefactor....

While we;re on the subject, why is Eradication in Shield Charge and not one of your earlier sets that has Oblit in it...malefactor considerations again....maybe swap that set lower and one of the Oblits higher...

I wont even get into explaining why people only slot 2 or 3 of a given set...look at Luck of the Gambler....the first 3 bonuses are great, the last two...not so much....

I would slot differently in a lot of places with your brute but I think thats mostly taste at this point...

To be honest, it's a bit of a mess.

For example, Grant Cover is 6 slotted to give a 2.5% ranged bonus. Changing this to 1 slot, adding 2 slots to weave gives 1.25% def to all, and adding 1 slot and slotting Zephyrs in SS and CJ gives 6.25% def to ranged. You even have a slot left over. You're not using slots all that efficiently.

Moving the Steadfast unique to Deflection will give you a small increase in resistance, and let you have the bonus if you exemplar to 27, where you have it now it only works at lvls 33+

Multistrike sets in PBAOE give good defense bonuses as well and they're pretty cheap, something to consider.

STA is fine with 4 slots of perf shifter

That should get you started on the way to a more efficient build.

Yeah I realize what you mean about being malefactored. But let's be honest am I really to expect good defense at low levels on a shield defense. Shield sucks until you're almost 50 to finish set bonuses.

Yeah I am over softcap but I mostly do the ITF and once they hit you, they keep hitting you as they stack -def on you.

I'm talking about people doing 2 of a set and then Hami enhancements in the same power. I've seen it in builds.I don't even use those, don't see the point with Inventions around.

Ok, if I remove the slots from Stamina there goes another 3ish% AoE def bonus From Performance Shifter. AoE defense set bonuses are hard to come by.

Multi Strike? really they only give 1.8% albeit in two categories of Positonal but the other bonuses in MultiStrike are kinda weak, too.

To be honest I was swapping out touch of death and such and realized that taking the Grant Cover was a good team move and a good IO mule in one. Didn't have another power to put in place as I was balancing the build.

Another question: I've seen people slot a Highly-Positional defensive build such as this for regeneration bonuses.
What is the clear benefit from doing that. I just push the Positionals to 45ish% and call it a day, then get my recovery above 3 % and I'm usually good.

Thanks for responding.

Moving the slot to deflection or true grit gets you something for nothing (slightly increased resistance, usable at a greater range of security level)

Slotting up your resistances should help for defense debuffs, carrying a purp insp or two will help as well. I have 2 steadfast (unique and res/def) and a generic resist dam in Deflection and 3 Aegis in True Grit.

Removing 2 slots from Sta and putting 1 more zephyr KB into CJ or SS (which I told you to 2 slot with Zephyrs) will get you the AOE defense back and have 1 slot left over. Though the Zephyr kb is quite expensive.

Best slotting for Grant Cover is 1 LotG recharge IMHO (endred if you already have 5). If you want to six slot something with defense, Battle Agility would be your best bet.

Regeneration's always nice, along with more hp, more damage, more recovery, more defense... I guess it's up to you what you prioritise the highest.

Just a heads up to you and the OP. The game doesn't track the level at which skills are available in the IO system, and you will thus never lose set bonuses and global bonuses because you have malefactored below the level of a given skill. All that matters is the level of the set.

Procs are obviousely not included, bacuase the skill must be available to proc off of. This includes passives like Health and Stamina.

Grant Cover has your defense debuff resistance. You want that skill at the ED cap no matter what. It is also quite potent on teams, being the ONLY skill in the entire game that grants DDR to other toons. This is a huge benefit for Invuln, EA, squishies, or other Shield users (to name a few).

OP:
Here is a build that I did quickly to show you alternate slotting options. This build mainly shows you where set bonuses are available at lower spots, because you seem too focused on getting bonuses from full slotting. Franken slotting for lower bonuses often yields better results-- especially when you look at the total enhancement value available in skills. Obliteration is a nice set, but 18% endurance reduction will hit your blue bar hard.

Mainly use this build to see alternate slotting options-- I didn't spend that much time optimizing it. I know you have no purples, but Armageddon with FF proc is pretty much what any WM toon should shoot for in Crowd Control... even if it takes them a year.

I learned 2 great things from that post Julius (not losing set bonuses if you lose the skill, Grant Cover's defense resist being buffable). Thanks!

Wrong.

A level 30 Steadfast Protection Res/Def provides its bonus when exemplared to level 27, regardless of where it is slotted. A level 10 Steadfast provides its bonus all the way down to 7, again, regardless of where it is.

IOs that grant special abilities as Set bonuses function exactly like set bonuses. Set bonuses only care about your current combat level. You retain your set bonuses from IOs slotted into powers that you have lost due to exemplaring, provided that the sets are no more than +3 to your current level, or are purple or PVP IOs.

IOs that grant a bonus on use (damage procs, Numina Unique, Kismet Unique, etc) are pretty much the opposite - they continue to function, regardless of their level, whenever the power is activated (or continuously in toggles or autos).
