New rig, need advice
Right off, what brand of power supply? I read a review of PSU's once where they drew more and more power until they 'shut down'. Some 400W PSU's 'shut down' by bursting into flames at about 350W draw. The best model was able to produce 495W before triggering a circuit breaker and shutting down gracefully.

The power supply is the least of your worries. I doubt a 280 will even fit!
A friend of mine put together a 'shuttle' PC using an Antec Lanbox. This is the same shape as a Shuttle, but a fair bit wider and taller. Even with that, cramming in a full-size 8800GTX was dicey.

Rickar - 50 Bots/FF Mastermind
Anti-Muon - 42 Warshade
Ivory Sicarius - 45 Crab Spider
Aber ja, natrlich Hans nass ist, er steht unter einem Wasserfall.
And that's before I cut a hole in the box that will let the 280 sit on the outermost PCI-E slot and let the heatsink sit on the exterior of the box.
Edit: Cant find it now, but a guy fit a 295 into the Shuttle just by doing what I said. Find the pic, its gorgeous. Only a moron would put a high-end card in there and not leave one of the panels open, or otherwise modded.
First, here's the review of the box at Tom's Hardware. The PSU is an 80 Plus Bronze which means it's efficient.
From a power standpoint, I don't see a problem with a single GTX280. That leaves the question whether or not it would fit, lengthwise. Now quoting from the review;
The final question concerned whether or not the XPC SX58H7 could really run today’s fastest graphics cards, since it was designed for up to two mid-market parts. We loaded our factory-overclocked, dual-GPU MSI GeForce GTX 295 and found that while power consumption increased to 275 W under Crysis, the twin-GPU assembly was actually cooler than its single-GPU sibling at 44 degrees Celsius. Adding eight threads of 64-bit Prime95 to Crysis brought peak power consumption to 425 W, which is still within the rated limits of Shuttle’s power supply. Gaming capability is fully validated, though anyone looking for space to install two of these monster graphics cards must once again turn to larger systems. |
But I would download the manual for the unit and take a read and see if it mentions any limitations. Also posting on small form factor websites or even contacting Shuttle directly should be on your list of places to check this out as well.

That's pretty much what I thought. I called my friends computer place and talked to some lackey who was like "all systems much match certified speeds, wattages blah blah." My friend called me back and said he did a test close to what I was asking. Only problem was the heat that can build up in that tiny box, but otherwise...
Thanks for being the only person to actually answer my question, FX. :P
*coughs*

Your original post made no mention of modding, and as much of the market for Shuttle SFFs are people who want easy builds, it's not too much of a stretch to see why I didn't automatically assume you intended to take a hacksaw to your components

I'm pretty amazed you can cram a full-sized card in there. Shuttle must employ magicians.

Well, why design an X58/Core i7-9xx system with one practical video card slot that can't take dual GPU card, at least a GTX 295?

Aye. Miniaturization is the first sign of technological progression. :P
Update:
Flawless. Makes me weep for all the time I spent building my giant HAL 8999. In fact, I am thinking of selling my "super-computer" and using the extra money to build that exact same Shuttle (cept with my 295, not my 280) and a toned down Shuttle for my gf to use for movie editing.
Seriously, 10/10. Wonderful. Best computer I've ever owned.
Can this run a Nvidia 280?"
I have a spare 280 and 8GB of 1066MHZ memory (though, I think one 2GB stick is no good). Going to pair it with a 1TB Seagate 'Cuda and a 2.66 Bloomfield.
Only worried about that blasted 500W PSU. Comp is going to be used in my living room to watch Hulu and online movies with my girlfriend. Can the GPU get enough power to play CoX on a 48 inch Samsung flat screen? (Prolly at 1980x1600 or w/e that exact setting is.) The comp will only be used to play CoX and download movies and let my girlfriend put music on it for company (don't worry, I won't let her actually touch the rig itself :P)
I see many reports that 500W does, indeed, work. Then some that are like "lol no 2 u, fool." Then people tell me to get an ATI 5870... but I don't like ATI and already have the 280.
Opinions?
Edit: Found someone running a Nvidia 295 on it that says it works like a gem. Opinions if you like, but with his pictures and benchmarks all seems well. Now to figure out how to mod the case....
