Super Speed = running on water...
Piecing together without hunting down posts, at herocon they aid get it done! And then they realized just how much work would be involved with animations and tossed the idea.
Be well, people of CoH.

I understand that the graphics end of it will be hard, but again when you are this far into the game, details are what rule.

Back Alley Brawler actually listed some of the game details that would need to be addressed here : http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...8&postcount=22
Not so much...that's just one of those things that happens when you're asked to vet an idea on the spot. I thought about the problem purely in terms of making a player avatar appear to run on the surface of the water, rather than swim...but didn't think about all of the things that also happen in the water outside of swimming around. Powers/Attacks, hit reactions, even jumping out of the water...all of those things rely on the player standing on a surface below that water's surface. I also haven't yet thought about all of the things that I haven't thought about needing to think about. |
All of them would happen after Pool power customization, and that isn't likely to happen anytime before Going Rogue gets wrapped up (requires tech and UI work). |
Graphics for "Super Speed" really is't that bad. (unless you have a slow computer then the graphics would be bad lol)
Thank you Je for the link to that. I hope that when they rebuild this game...going rouge... they put in ways to change the game around, they shouldn't have had people tell them at the start not to worry about these things, but hopefully the "going rouge" engine will replace the current and all these "extras" will be possible. ... ... ... (I still want to run on water!)

One of the keypoints about Going Rogue is that it's introducing a new graphics system. The actual system requirements to run the game are not going to change (much). You might now need a 1ghz processor where a 900mhz would do, but there is actually a bit of logic behind Paragon Studio's Madness. One of the limiting... factors... of games like Champions Online and the upcoming DC Universe is that you actually need a hefty computer to handle the game as the developers envisioned. That's bad when the majority of graphics cards in use today aren't from AMD or Nvidia... but are Intel Integrated numbers.
It's also bad when the fastest growing market segment of computers is to be found in the ultra-lite or sub-notebook markets, and the so called net-book format. While AMD does offer a mobile platform that can play in that space with it's Neo designs and RadeonHD 3200 / 4200 set, and while Nvidia offers the not-really-as-compelling-if-their-honest-about-the-thermal-output Ion platform.
In order to keep City of Heroes attractive to the widest range of users, it pays to have a game engine that will continue to scale down to those limp-wristed, you play on that?, type of computers.
At the same time, with Going Rogue, or maybe before-hand since Ultra-mode isn't strictly tied to the release of Going Rogue, something that a lot of players skip over, the developers have eye candy for those who are packing RadeonHD 4850+ graphics cards.

If it were easy, that's one thing, but from what i can tell, it's pretty darn complex. Personally i'd want to see the man hours spend building whole new powersets then a one trick pony like running on water.

There's also more to it than just running on water with super speed. I agree that it would be cool, but if you have people running on water, you also have to handle them stopping on water and standing there. What happens then, to they stand on the water or fall through into it. Then after moving again or if turn superspeed on while swimming in the water, do they stay swimming, or do they go back on top running? How would that animation look? Every one you ask will probably give a slightly different answer for their preference on these so without a lot of customization options someone isn't going to be happy with it.
Or they could just keep it as is where while in water you swim (minus a few random pools on the roman cave map and in gville) instead of a low level game engine rewrite for a RP or niche effect that really in no way affects game play except to maybe complicate it. There are many things that I, personally, would rather see them spend time implementing first.
Then again, we just got a Walk power, so who knows.
I do believe there was a thread about this awhile back but it wasnt just about (SS) and running on water. BTW i do agree with you on this subject it would be awsome if we were able to run on water. But there are all ways a down side to every thing in a game. Its all about choices!
Power is unless without the will to use it,
But will in nothing unless you believe in yourself.
And that is ture power!

I couldn't find a tread on this subject so here we go...
I would like to see the designers give us the ability to run on water with Super Speed (SS). Hey you don't see other super fast super heroes lugging through the water, they simply run on top of it. Don't get me wrong running, or even ninja running shouldn't have this ability, but if you are going to say a toon has SS, then the toon should be able to run on water. I know it is harder then just simply doing it, but it is little details like this that I would like to see now that the game has been out for this many years.
Give um feed back folks, what do YOU think?
