Unable to start game after driver update...

Hey guys...

I'm having some difficulty with a computer over at a friend's place. I was playing the game just fine last night, but I decided to update the ATI drivers today and since that update, CoH crashes before it even loads. I run the updater and click next. It shows the "Loading" banner and then sits for a moment before throwing up the dialog box that CoH has crashed and to fill in what I was doing at the time.

I'm aware that this is an older system. I don't expect to run crazy graphics settings. But as I said, it was working last night. The most obvious thing would be to downgrade the video drivers, but I'd like to see if there might be something I'm missing before I do that. Any suggestions?

Only graphics related setting that I see that could cause any problems would be that Vertical Sync is enabled. I'd disable it. As you know, use TweakCoH to change settings outside of the game.

The other problem I see is that there is only 2% free space on the C drive. Windows will have problems with that little free space. I'd recommend moving anything possible off of that drive, even if only temporarily, for troubleshooting.

The drive the game is installed to has plenty of free space, so I'd look at moving some of the things off of C and onto E.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Also, with only 1 Gb of RAM, you are going to be hitting the Page File quite a bit. I'd recommend defragging the C and E drives (at the very least) and especially whatever drive the Swap File is on.

I can confirm that the 9.10 drivers aren't causing the game to crash atop a WinXp system with RadeonHD 4850's.

However, you can't have updated your drivers. According to the information you posted your graphics driver is listed as : Video Device Name: RADEON 9800 PRO

The last driver to support this card was the 9.3 driver back in March: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...?&lang=English

There was an update in July, the 9.3.1 release, but as I understand it, that was primarily a source code bug fix for Microsoft's upcoming Vista SP2 / Win 7 launch. If you were running NT5 (Windows Xp) there wasn't anything listed in the patch notes.

I absolutely updated the drivers. From 7.4 to 9.3.1. Regardless, I'm well aware of the RAM and disk space issues. As I said in my original post, I played just fine last night without any issues. I guess I'll just have to roll back to the 7.4 drivers and hope it works again. *sigh*

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not by any means incapable of troubleshooting these things. I was just looking for a second set of eyes in case I was missing something.

Update:

I went ahead and "downgraded" back to the 7.4 drivers. The games loads and runs just fine again. Guess that old saying is true. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Hmm. This is actually quite interesting. I'm actually curious as to why the 9.3 drivers would break the game since.. well.. the 7.4 drivers. Actually I dunno.

I was going to say that they were using the older OpenGL rendering engine, since the 7.4 drivers were released in May 2007, and the OpenGL rewrite hit Fglrx in November 2007.

Could you try the December 2007 Drivers, the 7.12 set, and see if the crash occurs with them? : http://www.oldapps.com/ati.php?old_ati_drivers=3

Sure. Now that I know the 7.4 drivers work if I go back to them, I have no problem doing some testing. I may not get to it tonight though.

I'd also like to reiterate what's happening again so it's clear. When you click Next and then OK in the Updater, a small banner that says "Loading" pops up. It's before the game actually starts up with it's own loading splash screen. This is where it crashes. Right when the game is about to launch. It throws up the generic "Tell Cryptic what you were doing" dialog box.

Once I close that window, a memory read error pops up. I can either post a screenie or at the very least type out the error message for more info.

I figured you were already aware of the memory issues, and possibly the low disk space. I also thought it was possible that your friend may have downloaded some files, moved pictures off of a camera, or something else between the time you played with it working last night and when you tried today, and that you weren't aware of how much drive space had been eaten up.

I'd be curious how the 8.xx series of drivers worked with that card as well as the 7.12 that je_saist listed.

I'll start with the 7.12's and I'll go from there. My friend is out of town and I'm house sitting so no one else is using it. The last time I played CoH on it (Before last night) was most likely last year. Her machine is *mostly* used for work/general Internet usage, which is why I haven't bothered to update her drivers in so long. I only decided to do it last night on a whim for no particular reason.

Update:

So I installed the 7.12 drivers. Everything runs fine with them as far as I can tell.
If I get a bit more brave, I just might try the 8.xx series drivers at some point.
