Kat/SR soft cap question

I have a level 50 Kat/WP and a lvl 50 Claws/SR. I've always been a huge /WP fan but have recently discovered the srappy joy of /SR...and I love it!

I'm thinking of making a Kat/SR.

Is it a complete waste to aim for the soft cap without the use of Divine Avalance? Or should I just aim for 30% on melee def so that the 15% given by DA will achieve the 45% soft cap?

Or, is Kat/SR a waste in general? I've heard some good things about Kat/EA...

Personally speaking I included DA on my Kat/SR, but some people have omitted it because DA detracts from their attack chain. I wasn't worried too much about DPS and didn't want to waste slots with the Fighting pool (took Medicine) so for me it made sense.

As far as Kat/EA vs. Kat/SR, even though they are similar in that they have an auto power that grants 20% recharge; EA is a resistance based secondary. IMO resistance based toons are a lot more difficult to play than defense based ones. I'm also not too thrilled with the bonuses from resistance based sets versus defensive based sets.

Maybe try two builds in mids and see how they look?

Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

I am currently playing a Kat/SR (lvl 38) and I think he's pretty darn cool. Of course, I'm probably not the best to comment since this is my first char. However, I'll throw my opinion out there anyway (isn't that what the boards are for?). I have a very simple, non-DA, SO build planned that can easily soft-cap (see below). There are a number of options for IO builds so I won't bother posting, but I can say the SO build is working great. I did use DA early but spec'd out in 20s (when I got melee/range def over 30). I, personally, like the increase DPS when you spec out of DA. If I know I'm gonna have a tough battle I just pop a purple.

Here's the build that I'm messing around with right now...suggestions are welcome!

I'm somewhat tempted to drop DA and re-work some of the slotting to make up for the loss but I'm just not sure if it's such a good idea or not...

Energy Torrent is in there for conceptual reasons. Other than that, it should be pretty functional. I'd like to work some more recharge in there and drop Hasten if possible.

Softcapping melee defense without using Divine Avalanche will allow you to drop it from your build and run the highest DPS Kat/ attack chain (Golden Dragonfly > Gambler's Cut > Soaring Dragon > Gambler's Cut). But this takes a lot of global recharge, 155% assuming ED-capped recharge enhancement in Golden Dragonfly. So if you can muster that much global recharge, I would try to also softcap melee defense. If you can't, then there's not much point to it.

Thanks Laevateinn. I'm still somewhat new to the numbers side of things here so maybe you can help me out. I see a lot of talk about "global recharge". Are you looking at the recharge section in MIDS under misc or is this something else?

I believe the important number you want is 3.4s recharge on GD, which is how long it takes to do GC>SD>GC. I also believe that is 250% recharge on GD. I further assume approx 95% recharge enhancements in GD. So you need about 155% from other sources (i.e. quickness, hasten, IO set bonuses).

Not to pick on your advice but I have a different opinion. There's intermediate attack chains between the highest recharge one and any chain involving DA, DA being the worst Kat power for pure DPS. DA also requires you to hit an enemy (and to keep hitting) to keep that melee defense softcapped, while if you just have it on all the time you don't have to worry about that.

The importance of those two points will vary a lot for different builds and playstyles, but I believe it's something to keep in mind nonetheless, if only to see if it's relevant or not here.

Or, is Kat/SR a waste in general? I've heard some good things about Kat/EA...
Personally i have never had DA in my Kat/SR repertoire. Just for the reasons Nihilii said above and maybe just because i dont like it. Never found problems softcapping w/o it. I find tedious to keep it eg. doublestacked and while i certainly dont have the recharge needed for GD-GC-SD-GC chain, i still wont take it.

Imo Kat/SR is not a waste, however the lethal dmg is resisted more often than not, so... *shrug* I love it, but...

Now, EA vs SR is a whole different story, where EA being a resistance based set can get a loads of more out of DA.
