Trouble Finding Last Mob

I don't know if this is just me or not, but I seem to have a frequent problem doing "Defeat All..." missions. It seems I have cleared the entire map but the mission does not complete. I have either dropped these missions or petitioned a GM. When I petition, they "find" one Mob I missed. Last night I had this happen and after re-running the entire map multiple times I decided to take a break for a few minutes and then search the entire map one last time. I never found the guy and this was in a "lab" map where there doesn't seem to be as many places to hide (i.e. crates, rafters). Does this happen to others frequently? Are there some tricks or techniques I'm missing?

Happens to me all the time. The trick I'm most looking forward to is the, "You've defeated more than 90% of the mobs on the map" auto-highlight of all glowies and mobs on the map. This feature is still upcoming, though. :/

Currently, it's "retrace my steps ad nauseum until I go crazy and ring for support."

Happens to me all the time. Depending on my mood I either look again, drop the mission or do it again later. I once almost petitioned it but then I found the lonely mob at the beginning...

I'll be so happy when that feature arrives where the last mobs will be shown on map.

I used to play pre Issue 6 (and have recently started again).

I've only come across this a couple of times ever when it's been a real problem (ie. mob inside crate/wall). Usually it's just me missing them hiding behind crates or something in the warehouses, or missed a room in one of those 5 floor city block missions.

I bet it's been said a million times before, but flying back to cover then entire map (walls and everything) spamming the tab button always helps.

Just hang on to those missions until Issue 17.

Kidding!

Finding the last mob is annoying. Apparently, the devs agree, and they are doing something about it soon™!

Yup, a game update was confirmed in the Hero Con - Going Rogue info thread:

Upcoming feature (confirmed for I17): Enemies/Objectives will be marked on the mission map when 90% of the enemies have been defeated
All my wisdom and "leet skilz" in finding the hiding places, replaced with an in-game feature. It saddens me.

You just need more game time. After a while, you'll recognize the pattern of where spawns will be in a particular room. The hostages are a bit tricker though, but you'll still figure them out too.

The difficult ones to find are the patrols. Not only do they move into rooms you've already checked, but they're not always on the ground. They like to hop up on things, so you need 3 dimensional awareness and do a lot of Tab-targeting. I have found them up on the warehouse rafters.

On a similar note, there are the runners. They take some damage and bolt from the fight. If you're busy with a large spawn, you might not notice one leaving a room. Then after you moved on, they wander back into what you thought was a cleared room. With time, you can learn to handle this too by recognizing which enemy group have a tendency to run around more than others and then keep a mental count or be extra watchful for where everyone is.

My technique is to be thorough as I go through the first time, instead of going all the way back through.
-Clear each room carefully, watch for runners.
-Wait for any I may not have seen to come back.
-Look in side rooms, behind doors, etc.
-Hit Tab a lot while you are looking, don't rely on just your eyes.
-Don't forget to look up. Also take advantage of being up to look down.
-Take special care against foes that spawn extras, like DE, Rikti
-Also foes where things disappear like CoT, arachnos, Longbow. Wait for them to reappear.
-Also watch foes that self rez. Stare down every body to make sure it fades.
-Here's a big one: Watch NPC chatter! When you enter a new room/level it can often be a good clue to spawns that may be in a slightly unusual spot. Spin your camera until you can see the chat bubble in the center of your screen that gives a general idea of the direction. NPC chatter also serves as a good indicator of Patrols or Ambushes. It often pays me off to have Chatter in it's own little chat window with channels that don't say much (like Zone events and Wentworths).

If those things still end you up looking, then instead of bouncing like a pinball when you're looking, move slowly and methodically. Stand in unusual spots, open your map and make sure you've gone everywhere. All those things together should lead you to a lot less time and frustration on Kill Alls. Usually the only time I've needed to call a GM is when a monster escapes outside the boundaries of the wall somehow.

My most annoying where the hell is it search is a funny one though. You know how Devouring Earth pop up little Mini-me versions of themselves? Well once I was on an office map, and one of the Green Crystal guys did that. It was in a little side nook and I missed it happening on my first pass. The little guy spawned behind one of the potted plants. Even worse it was a tall spiky plant that looked just like his head. I was looking for a ... long time before Tabbing picked him up.

I don't recommend that you put NPC chat in it's own exclusive chat window. When you review the chat, you won't have a time reference of when the Boss or Hostage talked. I have the NPC chat share a chat window with System chat. System generates enemy defeat messages (? at work now, can't double check) regularly, so I have an idea of how many spawn groups I ought to back track.
