In need of improvement: Croatoa Lore

Which is exactly why they leave some wiggle room. Stories are better when not everything gets spelled out and tied up with a little bow. It's a much more engaging experience. So unless the devs come up with some good lore for Croatoa, I'll make my own and call it unofficial. |
By all means, go write your stories, then build them into game missions in the MA. When you're done let me know. I'll play them.
However I think their time would be far better served finishing some of the stories that really are criminally underwritten, instead of going back to one of the more complete storyline zones they have. Just from experience ingame and on these forums, I know a lot of people are really interested to know the full story of Dark Astoria, or the conclusion to the return of the 5th Column and the Oncoming Storm.
Great big story gaps that need bricks will get my vote before decently built walls that need a patch coat, any day.

I would call the people Salamancans, since the humans (and presumably the ghosts, and possibly the Cabal too) come from the town Salamanca.
On another note, the inhabitants of Croatoa would be called Croatoans, right?

I would generally call the various enemies in the zone by their faction. Based on real-world mythology, the Red Caps would also be a part of the Unseelie Court (though the actual faction "Unseelie Court" in the game only show up for the Halloween event, and don't have any ties in the game lore to the Red Caps).
The Tuatha de Dannan and Fir Bolg are based on two races in Irish mythology; the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Fir Bolg. The Tuatha Dé Danann kicked the Fir Bolg out of Ireland. Sreng (See the Fir Bolg boss critter "Streng") cut off Nuada's (king of the Tuatha Dé Danann) right hand in one-on-one combat during the Battle of Mag Tuired. Eochaid mac Eric (king of the Fir Bolg; see the Fir Bolg GM "Eochai") was slain by The Morrígan (goddess of kingship, prophecy, war, and death in battle) during the same fight. Although the Tuatha Dé Danann defeated the Fir Bolg, they allowed the Fir Bolg to keep 1/5th of Ireland out of respect for Sreng's heroism.
Edit: After the battle, Nuada was deemed no longer fit to be king (either for losing in one-on-one combat, or for missing a hand, I'm not sure), and was replaced by Bres (see Tuatha de Dannan boss critter "Bres").

Since you've kinda got a historical bent on your fanfiction (letter dated 1646), it should be noted that the second attempt at colonizing Roanoke Island failed, though nobody knows why. John White left the Roanoke colony in 1587 to try and obtain supplies to help the colony. However, because of England's war with Spain, he was unable to return until 1590. The colony was abandoned, with the letters "CRO" carved into a tree, and "CROATOAN" carved into a fence. I'm sure you could fit that 1587-1590 timespan into your Croatoa fanfiction

I always love the "though nobody knows why" part of that story. Croatan Island is an island south of Roanoke Island. It's a pretty big freakin' clue there, Sherlock, that maybe they went there.

But, they didn't go and check it out, left the post as abandoned, and sailed south for warmer climates. The blue-eyed Indians that were reported to have shown up in the area shortly thereafter? Coincidence, I'm sure.

Croatoa is one of my top favorite zones in the CoX games, due to the feel of an eternal autumnal equinox and a loose Halloween theme. I also love the eternal battle between the four enemy factions and the apparent remoteness of the area in relation to the rest of Paragon City. The one thing I feel the need for, though, is some solid lore for the area. The most we get out of it is current events, a little faction lore, and the presence of the ruins of the original settlement, Salamanca. But how do these all tie together? I feel there should be an epic story to the forest of the mysterious and magical. I'm attempting to make up for where the devs lack in Croatoan lore by writing short stories about the history of Croatoa, starting all the way back with the first Salamancan settlement and jumping through time, telling stories that would flesh out the area's history (sorry, no spoilers on what I'm writing). So unless the devs come up with some good lore for Croatoa, I'll make my own and call it unofficial.
On another note, the inhabitants of Croatoa would be called Croatoans, right? But that's such a boring title! How about the Croatians? Yeah, I know that's what the people of Croatia would be called, but it sounds cooler (at least to me). What do you guys think about both premises?
