Grav/Psi Dom New to the Game, Help Requested!
Psi is an excellent assault powerset with some good all-round ability and a brilliant utility power in Drain Psyche.
Gravity has a few issues but its main one is the lack of a good every-spawn AoE soft control option until L26. Even then Wormhole has some issues in comparison to the far easier to use soft control options that the other sets get.
Its other main issue is Dimension Shift (although I could make a fairly negative case for Propel as well). Dimension Shift is a power that even its advocates refer to as "situationally ok" and then proceed to describe situations somewhat similar to patting yourself on the head whilst rubbing your stomach. More often it's a good reason to get kicked from your team.
If nothing else, Gravity will give you a very loose build to play with (since a lot of the powers in it are rather... well, no, on Dominators). Definite pickups are Lift, GravDistort, GDF, Wormhole and Singy. Ah, Singy... one of the best pets you could ever ask for.
Psi's a little slower these days, but makes up for it by packing a melee that hits like a bloody truck: Mind Probe. Drain Psy will help alleviate the inevitable END crunch of running full bore and PsyScream and PsiShock will be good assets for mowing down the softer parts of spawns.
and ESPECIALLY why the general feeling seems to be that Grav isn't on par with other primaries. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. |
A) No per-spawn use control tool until 26. Earth has Stalagmites, Fire's Flashfire, Ice's Slick, Mind's Mass Hypnosis, Plant's Seeds: All of them are at or before level 12.
B) Little to no AoE potential. Aside from the Hold and Wormhole, Gravity's only other AoE tools are Crushing Field and Dimension Shift. Not even gonna go there.
C) Gravity was the ST Damage set of Control sets. Dom's don't need ST damage since they've got an entire secondary with tons of it.

i'm working on one of these, myself. just hit 24 & am still mapping out the build. is fitness really necessary with /psi? did the change to mental blast & tk thrust make them worthwhile choices?
most recent 50 - psy/mm blaster
You can get away without Fitness, but typically after a respec rather than levelling up. You need a bit of recharge in your build and some EndReduc in your attacks before Drain Psyche is a viable complete replacement for Stamina.
YMMV, but that's a good general rule.
What an awesome experience it's been playing this Dom! I'm new to the game and levelled a Nin/Nin Stalker to lvl 26 from my trial to sub before deciding on this char. Not that I didn't love my Ninja, but playing a Dom is more my style...this active defense thing is so involved that I get more fun out of it. I'm used to playing healing classes in other games.
Things got difficult the closer I got to 32...I started dying a lot or succumbing to mez because I was being too conservative with my Domination, but once I ironed that out, fighting Bosses became a heck of a lot more fun...
Now that I have my Singularity, things are moving along quite nicely. Watching mobs fly as I drop one in the middle of a group is great to watch. When my VG goes missioning, I handle most of the lock-down while everyone else goes to town...they'll wait for me to pop a Singy into a group, then pick stuff off one by one, unless they feel daring.
Some notes:
Wormhole, while certainly entertaining, isn't exactly what teams look for from you unless you teleport mobs right back onto the spot they were standing. However, if the team knows you have it, it is a VERY useful pulling tool. Its looooong animation time has been a little problematic while soloing, but it's a great tool for pulling and active defense (like separating groups to give yourself more survival time). It has many other uses than just that, though; I'm sure I've missed something important about its usefulness.
Endurance is a problem for me. I have Drain Psyche and use it whenever it's up, but I still struggle sometimes. I think I'll look into Fitness, though some say that it's not necessary with Drain Psyche...I dunno.
Drain Psyche makes a good replacement for Stamina only when you've got a fair bit of recharge in your build. Otherwise neither it or Domination are up often enough to serve. I normally encourage people to respec out of Stamina later on rather than try to build without it.

Good times that. Who needs to go to them when you can bring them over?

I'm aware of a Grav Dom that went one step better. Not only was he fond of Wormholing groups onto the team, but he also used Team Teleport to "good" effect bringing the team to the mobs. Needless to say he also had Dimension Shift for the one-stop griefing solution shop.

I've been playing my Dom for less than a month and reached lvl 23. I noticed the Grav/Psi help thread and checked it out but since the changes have had to start thinking about how I'm going to work with this character.
What I'm looking for is feedback concerning both powersets and ESPECIALLY why the general feeling seems to be that Grav isn't on par with other primaries. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
