Take the Fighting pool, and an Inv/SS will be quite adequately tough with just SOs or generic IOs. What invention sets you should add will depend on what you want out of the character, how your playstyle works, and what powers you chose to take.

Again, with SOs/generic IOs, a Shield/Electric or Shield/Fire tanker gets to around 40% defense against everything, which is quite adequate. These are both AoE (or at least multi target) focused builds that work well at farming. Where you take it from there with set bonuses depends on what you want, again, although the /Electric will have a few more options than the /Fire will.

This Shield/Electric build was not prohibitively expensive to build, although I do level up on task forces, so most of the expensive stuff was bought with merits or gotten through rolls rather than on the auction house. This is the farming tank, and the sets laid out here are 90% in place.

go to www.cohplanner.com

You can create your own build however you want it. some will design a build for ya like heraclea, however some may not have the time.

Mid's hero builder will step by step show you how to do something, and if it is first time taking a certain action windows will pop up letting you know what you are about to do.

protector-knight: lvl 50 invun/axe tank
Lillian Brick: lvl 50 stone/stone/pyre tank
Hybrid-knight: lvl 50 db/regen scrap

yes. we figured that out already.

I would go elec/ss for a cheap farming build. You get recharge, damage aura, good resists, a self heal and an endurance tool. Having rage and footstomp is nice as well.

What exactly are you aiming for with the build? Defense cap (See Call_Me_Awesome's guide)? General, all-around Superman clone (see Vox Populi's SuperTanker guide)? Take a browse through the various guides. That should at least give you some starting points for the build you'd like.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

This is why I'm reluctant to just post builds without knowing the player's priorities.

Defense capping is good, and can be done easily on a Shield tanker and with slightly more effort on an Invulnerability tanker. But you hardly need to do it to farm with on either.

Endurance and sustainability are my big focuses. Others have different priorities; but for farming they are important.

Other focuses are possible: health, hit points, and regeneration; even movement speed. I've built for all of these things. It's easier now to build for survivability through health, HP, and regen than through defense, because defense is the in thing right now.

i'm looking for the best irespec for my 50 axe/shield tank. i see some good recommendations above for shield, but not much on axe. also, i see a lot of people use fighting skillsets on tanks and scraps. is fighting really all that? how do it's buffs compare with leadership?
