Call of duty 4 MW2 lost my vote

So our worst fears have been confirmed: there will be no dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2. This means like Call of Duty 4, online pc players will be subjected to random matchmaking - where you are at the mercy of the game to determine whether you are taken to a 16v16 custom match or an 8v8 crap game with no special features.

This is the same problem that plagued COD4 and was its most criticized aspect of the title.

So what is your view, will this be enough to break the hype surrounding Modern Warfare 2?

Quote:
No Server browser - This will mean a totally random matchmaking service will replace the trusty ol' server browser which makes many PC gamers rage! (including me). While it isn't the make or break of online gaming for many games, allowing dedicated servers gives the player more freedom and choice in picking each server. As Bad servers will be avoided and good servers would be revisited. I mean seriously, in Call of Duty 4 when you wanted to go to a server with a 16 vs. 16 game on Overgrowth on a console version (matchmaking), You ended up being on something like an 8 vs. 8 on a lame map like Shipment or you had to make the match yourself.

My personal opinion, having just learnt that there will be a COD4MW2 from your poat, is:

WOOHOO!!! cOD4 rocked! More more yes please! ...eh, whats tgat about servers?

Oh, pvp? Meh, dont care. Just as long as the single-player campaign is as well written and designed as the first game.

However, since i dont hate PvPers, you have my sympathies at being deprived of sth you want.

Ps COD 5 isnt as good as COD4 imo. Its all too green and muddy.

yes and no.

To the dedicated gamer, this is heart-breaking news, and the players who routinely buy hard-core games will stay away.

However, the class of gamer that grew up on UT and Quake makes up a smaller percentage of the buying public than those who entered gaming through Halo. Halo players won't care about the junk matchmatching, the lack of dedicated servers, or anything else. They just buy what some marketing guy says is the next greatest thing...

and there's little reason to doubt that from a technical aspect, CoD MW2 IS the next greatest FPS.

So while this move is going to lessen the number of purchases made of the game, it's not going to impact those sales enough to tell Activision this is not the way gaming should be going.

Fixed it for PvE, with my tongue firmly in my cheek

My general opinion as someone who doesn't enjoy PvP very much is that no matter what my personal preferences are, choice in gaming is a good thing, and so long as I get what i want from a game, if others get something different as well then that can only be good for me too, as more units will sell and the company who releases the game will have more reason to make more of the same and more profits to keep them afloat and in the business. Heck, they can stick a PvP mode in Day of the Tentacle II if it'll help it get made to the same standards that the first one was made to

The same mentality that is causing your particular problem here was responsible for the awful dumbing-down of Deus Ex 2; the attitude that good is good enough to shift enough units, and they don't need to go the extra mile. It's very sad. I feel that we in CoH are lucky to have a Dev team who largely doesn't think like this.

I am a bit confused as to why this was posted on the European lounge?
Shouldn't it have gone to City Life, or, better yet, Comic and Hero/Villain Culture?

It probably shouldnt be here at all. Just by forum rules.

Since it is, though..
I played CoD4 on the Xbox. It worked fine. No, correction, it was the best damn FPS I had ever played, and was also the first one I actually brought rather than borrowed.

As soon as I get access to Live again (stupid fragging Uni proxy...) then I will be playing a lot of stuff online again.

I'm European.

Yahtzee isn't, I don't think, but he has a lot of fans who agree with his opinions. I for one am a little more liberal than he is, but everything he likes, I like. Silent Hill 2...ah...

I prefer CoD:WaW over CoD4 (have the 360 versions of both) simply because some of the glitches from 4 were fixed and lag issues seem to be a bit less rampant (and the killstreak powers seem a bit more balanced). I spend most of my time playing Halo 3 or GoW2, but that doesn't mean I don't know anything about games with server browsers like Quake or CS:S (or even Halo:CE for the PC). I have no preference either way, and while I do know that games with dedicated servers make network manipulation somewhat harder, I don't find network manipulation to a big problem in everyday gameplay.

Not quite true, so long as they set the ping levels to a decent level.

That was the worst mistake made by Epic on Gears of War 2. They raised the ping from either 150 or 175 to 200...the result was catastrophic. Online play on any competetive multiplayer map became a very simple equation; Host = win. That was it. The Host team WON. Because, sadly, it tended to add in people with shoddy connections who must have lived in the a$$ end of nowhere with 75kb connections. The rest of the players were lagged into the ground.

The same was true for Horde mode, but at least then you just quit and tried again. Yes it meant the team lost people, but no one should be forced to play when you can hold down fire indefinately and you're lagging so bad your ammo doesnt decrease ever. And you cant hit anything.
Fail on the highest level.

CoD4, WaW and Halo never seemed to suffer that problem, thankfully.
