Fill-in-the-Blank Fire/Psi Build

Help me fill in the blanks below for my first Fire/Psi build.

It's also my first Villain (hence my preference for Fly, which is easier on a newcomer than other travel powers), so if it looks like I don't have a clue, I won't argue. I've read every Fire/Psi guide I can find, but there's no substitute for experience, so please add your thoughts.

I put it in this format, instead of Mid's, to make it easy to read at a glance, since I'm more concerned about powers and slot balance than timing and sets.

If you figure these powers are a given for the build:
Char, Mind Probe, Fire Cages, Hasten, Hot Feet, travel1&2, Fire Imps, Psychic Shockwave, Patron1-3
and if you add
Drain Psyche, Psychic Scream, and Tactics (plus Maneuvers or Assault),
then you have three levels of Blank choices (16, 18, and one later level). In this build, I filled them with Telekinetic Thrust, Smoke (remember, I'm a newbie who doesn't know his way around), and Psionic Lance.

Better choices? Cinders? Assault vs Maneuvers?

Will I need Stamina, even with Drain Psyche and Power Sink? If so, drop TT, Smoke, and Psionic Lance?

Do I need the Medicine Pool? This build doesn't even have Health.

Slot changes? I can choose later for Set. Right now, I'm dirt poor, and it's enough to look ahead for basic IO's.


I've already taken the character to level 14, and it's great fun. Now I'm at my first blank for a power choice, and I'd appreciate any veteran input.

I think it's hilarious that you posted it like that to help readability, but the non-bolded red font on the slate-blue background pretty much makes my eyes bleed ...

Regarding the Stamina vs Drain Psyche issue: Drain Psyche is only a feasible replacement for Stamina once it has plenty of slots and recharges quickly (ie., some reasonable level of global recharge). I recommend taking Stamina initially and respeccing into a Stamina-less build at some later point.

Some tips on that build:

  • Flashfire is your only decent AoE control power. It deserves 6 slots. I recommend 2 Acc, 2 Duration, 2 Recharge.
  • Hot Feet pretty much becomes "always on". As it's an endurance hog, you really need 3 EndReduc in there.
  • Fire Cages is a horrible, horrible AoE damage source. Slot it with accuracy, endurance reduction and immob duration. Slotting it with recharge just encourages bad behaviour You do see this slotted with Positron's Blast in some builds; that's for the cheap +recharge set bonus, not because the damage is worth enhancing.
  • If you take my adivce above about Stamina, you won't need end reduc in your attacks. Slot for acc, dam and rech. Typically Acc, Dam, Dam, Dam, Rech is reasonable slotting.
  • Slot Drain Psyche with as much recharge as you can. I personally like 5 x Doctored Wounds + 1 recharge IO, even at early levels as the set is quite cheap.
  • Fire Imps is best slotted with 1 Acc, 3 Dam. You don't need recharge.
  • It's a shame you took Hot Feet so early. It's hard to run consistently without a decent endurance recovery power. By taking it this early, you need to put off Psychic Scream until after Stamina/DP.

That's a tight set of power choices, with these questions left:

- Is Telekinetic Thrust now a key power?
I could take Smoke instead, which might save me a couple of smacks on the head. I could also take an Aid power.

- Now that I have Stamina, am I best with a Patron Pool other than Mu Mastery?
Or stick with it but replace Power Sink with Surge of Power? I'm a PvE player who teams as often as possible, soloing when needed.

- Vengeance or Ball Lightning?

Is Telekinetic Thrust now a key power?
It's a lot of fun. I'm not sure that I'd describe it as "key". Personally, I'd put it where you have Fire Cages and leave that power until much later in your build.

- Assault or Maneuvers?
- Vengeance or Ball Lightning?

Depends. How many LotG +recharge IOs do you have access to?

The reason why you see the Leadership pool on so many Fire/Psi Doms is that both Maneuvers and Vengeance can be slotted with that IO. Along with Hover you have 3 spots to slot this.

- Any slotting changes?

  • I like Acc, Hold, Hold, Rech, Rech for Char.
  • Hasten should be slotted Rech, Rech, Rech!! not Rech, Rech, Rech?
  • If you took SS instead of Fly you'd have a spot for another power. SS isn't as bad as people think - rememeber there is unlimited Jet Pack powers now.

Are you planning on using recipes or just IO's for enhancements?

Telekinetic Thrust in the early level can be a good thing to get foes off of you but keep in mind if Fire Cages is cast, then the KB effect will not happen. FC makes foes rooted. Also FC will draw alot of aggro to you so be careful not to start out a fight with that power.

As far as Smoke goes, it's situational. I personally haven't taken it on either Fire/Psys I've got (2 perma Fire/Psys).

I'd take Cinders at 26. It's the ruh-roh power to use when too many foes are attacking all at once on ya. But that's just my personal preference.

Assault or maneuvers at lvl 30? hhmmm, I'd take assault.

Patron Powers, think of changing over to Soul Mastery.
Dark Embrace at 41 (4 slots) end red, res, res, res
Soul Drain at 44 (5 slots) acc, acc, dam, rec, rec *this power is like WHOA! it'll boost your acc and damage output tremendously.
at 47, I like Dark Obliteration over the pet. (5 slot) acc, acc, dam dam, end *or pick up Dark Consumption if you're hurting for endurance constantly


Nocturbo dark/kin corr
Thermonuk fire/rad corr
Forrest Phyre spines/fire scrap

One if I'm lucky. Zero is probably a safer bet.

I'm consistent about selling to the market, but I'm neither an ebillionaire nor a vet with a posse of toons at 50. I really won't be stocking up on LotG +recharge. I won't have Perma.

Does Leadership then lose much of its value for this build? I'd gladly use the slots for other powers.

It's extremely appealing to have an extra slot - or two if I skipped travel powers altogether. Is it really possible to get by with just Jet Packs, or will I be kicking myself at level 30?

For me, SS is as bad as people imagine. Redside maps are very, very unforgiving to newcomers finding their way around on the ground. Fly is the best match for me while I'm learning the layout, so the question is, "Can I simulate that with a Rocket Pack, or will I be the kid on a Big Wheel while the rest of my team screams by on Green Machines?"

At 27, I'll fill up with level 30 standard IO's. Then I'll gradually replace them as I can afford sets. I won't have Perma, which I can appreciate more than I can afford.

That's how I felt in planning my ill/rad controller, but I've found Superior Invis to be terrific. Maybe with a Dom I won't feel the need to sneak as much.

I can see that being useful. Thanks, too, for suggesting moving up Hurdle.

Sounds like the main difference is the acc/dam boost of Soul Drain? Mu Mastery is more for Endurance?

Mu Mastery is more for Surge of Power. That power is great, especially stacked with Drain Psyche.

It looks ok to me..though I'd argue..Flash Fire + Fire Cages, makes for a great (and very early) ghetto AoE hold. It's unconventional, but its served my fire/psi well from the early levels and onwards. For that reason alone I find fire cages useful and a fire/psi is one of the few Dom builds that I'd argue taking the AoE immobilize as soon as you can squeeze it in. Taking bonfire during the early levels (and dropping it later) isn't a bad choice either..Fire has great aoe soft control...and you get it pretty early. I always start with an early "leveling" type build..and respect later for the higher levels....

Oh and I couldn't agree with the advice of taking Soul Mastery... over the other pools. Having tried almost every patron with Fire/Psi...Soul Mastery has worked out the best, hands down. Also the Toxic resist in Dark Embrace is nice to have.
