Shield Charge, AAO, and Lighting Rod

Been working on Shield/Electric (Yes, I am loving Elec so much I made 2 toons ). Just reached the magic level of 26 and got Shield Charge while sitting on 36% Melee and Range defense (Offensive slotting at the moment, could probably be a bit higher).

My questions concerns the usage of Shield Charge and Lightning Rod on this type of build. One thing I have noticed in working on this toon is that AAO is not instant in it's buff. Like most auras there is a pulse and a lingering effect that covers the time between pulses. This causes the numbers to jump up and down, but also leaves a variable lag time between Shield Charge and the first pulse.

First, am I reading the numbers correctly in that Shield Charge, when teleporting from outside of aura range, does not get any benefit from AAO? If this is true would it be more efficient to lead with Lightning Rod, wait for AAO buffs to kick in, then follow with Shield Charge?

Why not run in so that both LR and SC are buffed by AAO? I realize that it doesn't look nearly as cool, but if you're going for max damage it would seem to be the thing to do.

This is what I do solo. I herd first, then hit the BU-LR-SC combo. That usually wipes almost all of the minions quite handily.

Teamed, I'm usually not as worried about my damage outpit, so I use them consecutively when I need to get two close by spawns under control.

I do the same with my Shield/Fire. I tend to jump in, survive the alpha then fire off FSC, SC and Fireball. Usually there's not much left afterwords. I also tend to use a similar tactic with my Shield/SS. Getting the buff definitely helps with the damage output and the rapid arresting of mobs.

Oh, I also kinda' do the "one alligator, two alligator" count before unloading on the mobs.

True, but that negates one of the benefits of ether power, the surprise of the attack.

Not saying that is not the best solution, but it seems a bit of a waste of the power.

things die, it's not a waste

I'd prefer build up, SC, LR.

Meh a surprise attack is unnecessary on a tanker - you aren't going to instantly die if they get a round of attacks off while you get your AAO on.

Honestly that surprises me a bit. Being the first Shield tank I have gotten to his level outside of beta I assumed that leading with Shield Charge was common practice and the lack of AAO boosting during the teleport was an acceptable loss.

Is it the same for /Elec tanks, in general? Lead with another attack and then let loose with Lightning rod local? In general...I know there will be situations where the teleport will be useful, but for your bread and butter attack chain.

A surprise tanker?

We need Self -Taunt IOs.

AAO has a shortish range -- a normal spawn will not be grouped tightly enough to get a lot of them in range (and thus a big damage boost).

So surprise per se means you'll do less damage. Run, jump, or (for style points) teleport in, then stall for time (taunt, use another attack) while they shoot off their ranged attacks, then draw weapons and rush you. Once they're clustered in tight (and AAO is pushing your damage way up) hit Build Up, Shield Charge, and any other PBAoEs you might have.

That's for optimizing dmage output -- if you are getting too much damage input while playing that way, you may need to open with a surprise SC as you have been doing.

heh, I had it planned like that from the beginning when I rolled my Shield/DM Tanker, but that was pretty much a must for me, gather them up, Soul Drain + AAO -> Shield Charge
