PvP Event

We have our Haloween week, Double XP week, crazy anniversary month, plenty of fun. But howabout some pvp love? (without messing with the system!). I am thinking badges that can only be obtained during pvp week, double the pvp IO drop rate in zones, and give double inf/prestige and give XP for pvp kills. Not only would it make pvp funner for pvp'rs but give incentive for new pvp'rs to give it a shot and hopefully lure them into the spiffy world of PvP.

What do you think of a PvP Week or PvP Weekend? I think its time we got a Dev created event of some sort for PvP, especially after all the people that have left.

Note: This is in no way, shape, or form a "Fix pvp thread"

Fixed that line for ya >.>

In theory, I like the idea... but before they put focus on PvP though, it does need to be fixed

Please no. The last thing it need are more non-PvPers going in and complaining that they don't have a chance to win in a fight against people that know how to PvP in this game.

... I'm sorry, but how do you propose they learn if they're not supposed to come in the zone because they don't know how to play under the system?

That said, I could see a PVP reward weekend or something going in, but I don't really think there's much likelihood that it would change the amount of people in the zones. And those that do come in will probably be farming for the recipes. I think you'd need a much bigger carrot to entice to population in- so big that it would probably be unfeasable.

Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?

Hence part of the problem with PvP in CoX.

Person A knows how PvP works and enjoys it. Person A assumes (rightfully) that those who enter PvP zones are open to PvP and know how to play.
Person B is interested in PvP, but isn't familiar with that aspect of the game yet, enters a PvP zone.
Person A sees person B and attacks, obliterating person B like it's nothing.
Person B learns nothing other than he dies easily.

This is made worse by IOs, because of:
Person C knows how PvP works, and spends numerous hours every day farming to get the money to deck his uber PvP build out entirely in purples/PvP sets.
Person A may stand some small chance against person C, but B may as well not even try.
And don't get me started on C in the 35 PvP zone. >.>

In all games, PvP is a niche thing.. in CoX it's even MORE of a niche thing, where those who know it well rule, and everyone else is just fodder.
There is little to no incentive to PvP, the learning curve is harsh, it practically requires you to be a hard core farmer (or ungodly good) or you die a lot.

.... Sorry I'll stop ranting >.>

I have watched how the non-PvPers have acted in the past. They expect to be able to do as well in PvP as they do in PvE. When they lose, they complain that the system is broken and demand the Devs fix it. This is how we got PvP2.0. When I first trying to PvP, I got no help from the PvP community. For six months all I got from anyone was "lol" when I would ask for help. It took help from an SG friend before I learned the basics. Even now I wont go near a PvP zone unless I know someone there. It's just not that fun to be mocked when I lose (I know I will lose but I don't care as long as it was a good fight.) I would love to see PvP more popular, but I don't see that happening. Someone needs to want to PvP or they will leave with such a bad experience that they will never go back.

I could see the developers spending some effort on a PVP Event. I wouldn't participate in it, and I imagine a number of players like me wouldn't either, and so whatever the event is would have to be crafted carefully to that end: in other words, PVP would still be voluntary.

Among the various ideas, and the level of difficulty in implementing them:

  • Special PVP-only rewards (XP, influence, reputation, salvage, recipes, etc) for that weekend. Relatively simple.
  • Turn an existing zone (temporarily) into a PVP zone; have separate instances of the zone for PVE and PVP. Very difficult; the entire zone's geometry would have to be stress-tested for exploits, hospitals for both sides added, safe zones created for each faction, etc.
  • A PVP-specific mission obtained through a common zone (for instance, Pocket D or the RWZ). Medium difficulty; although it would require some stress-testing for geometry and exploits, it would be on a mission-sized scale instead of a zone-wide scale.

Wrong.

We complain about the people playing pvp being jerks. The devs evened up the field in a way that pvp people didn't much care for. However it DID even up the field a bit. The people generally willing to dedicate themselves to pvp will still always - always - always gank people like myself and my friends who do NOT want to "just" do pvp. I don't like pvp because of the people. Not because it isn't fun with *the right people*. I love playing with folks that I trust won't teabag me and make fun. And no - sorry, no matter how many times people claim it, "that's part of the experience" is not an excuse to act like a 12 year old who's had too much sugar.

People in pvp are the problem. I will say that the system here doesn't work for everyone because it wasn't in the original game experience. I didn't come here to play pvp - and honestly by the numbers, 90% of the rest of the game's population didn't either.

This is one of those "good ideas with too many inherant problems" and thus will never happen. First and foremost, due to the people who have acted like jerks, everyone with an interest in PvP is painted as a criminal by 90% of the community. I've been mercilessly ganked in PvP but I've actually never experienced real insults in zones other than being taunted into what would have been an obvious trap if I would have fell for it. I've actually received tips after being killed.

Perhaps it's just my server. *shrug*

Something needs to be done simply about the perception of PvP but the actual suggestions made here sound good. Having the the Devs show up to PvP in the actual game (NOT Test Server) would help simply by their presence. As far as rewards are concerned, one suggestion that would be interesting is connect Merit drops to the actual rep timer rewards. Also, the current PvP recipes are more or less the equivalent of purples--there needs to be some new ones added that are more on par with common IOs and subsequently much less rare.
