Solo scrapper

I left CoH just after i3, I returned about a week and a half prior to i16. With that said, a lot has changed.

I wanted to make a character and basically see everything I have missed, which is an absurd amount. I figure I will be soloing missions almost exclusively, with a few groups here and there. I thought a scrapper would be good for this.

I am interested in Dual Blades, Claws, or maybe Electric Melee. Secondary, I'm open to suggestions: I was thinking Regeneration or Willpower?

My question is, which of those primaries and secondaries tends to solo best?

Those powersets you listed are pretty good for soloing *in my eyes* but any powerset duo should/will be a good set for scrappers to solo with

I had a bs/wp that i had grinded my way to lvl 10 with the powers of Hack and Parry, and then i teamed to do TFs most everyday and then when i hit lvl 32, i once agian begun the grind to 50.

So based on my limited knowledge of the combos, they all do great solo.... but this also brings up the answer of 'all sets can solo, but its limited to what the player has to offer' which to my meaning, is that any one person can solo, but can they solo 'well'

Edit: and a grand welcome back, hope you enjoy your second visit

So of Regeneration and Willpower both solo fine?

Awesome, thanks!

I started with a regen scrapper in Issue 1, and since I didn't level particularly FAST on purpose, I got to watch all the "old" nerfs hit regen. Though it all I thought it was STILL a very survivable and strong secondary, and that toon became my "main" for years.

Fast forward to Issue 11 and Willpower -- I rolled up a Dual Blades/Willpower scrapper, who's been my new main toon ever since about level 20. That character can survive stuff the regen scrapper can't -- however, that's WITH a fully Invention Origin-ed out build! The regen scrapper still has "just" Single Origin Enhancements, and slotting him with IO's is one of my next projects.

I think most people would agree that in general, Regen and WP are both strong, survivable secondaries -- WP is more "toggle up and forget," where Regen requires (and benefits from!) a more "hands on" approach. Depending on whether or not you intend to PvP, I do know that WP has gotten "nerfed" recently, and a lot of PvP'ers still love Super Reflexes as a secondary.

Hope that helps -- your mileage may vary, of course -- and welcome back to CoX!

The standard answer is that an any/any scrapper will solo normal PvE content just fine. Another standard answer for people new to scrappers is Katana/Willpower - easy to build, easy to play, easy to level, no major weaknesses, and gives up nothing on top end power if you get to that point.

Regeneration is a good solo set, but comes with a warning - it is very interactive, and your level of survivability will depend a lot on the skill you develop in properly timing the use of your click powers and in anticipating how much damage is coming in and when. It also isn't a particularly good choice for large teams or cranking up the solo difficulty level to mimic you being a large team. In comparison, Willpower is very fire and forget, and its survivability increases with the number of enemies surrounding you, so is good for team play or pretending you're a large team. Either will solo just fine.

I haven't fiddled with Electric Melee yet, but both Dual Blades and Claws are perfectly good primaries, with a nice mix of single target and AoE damage.

If you use either claws or dual blades go with willpower instead of regen since WP only has 1 power that'll cause redraw.

I'm not a fan of Regeneration so I'll recommend Will Power. I think the above posters have covered this.

Claws and Dual Blades are sets where you will want every attack. Depending on your primary, taking every attack may be ill advised. On my my DB/WP, DB/DA, and Claws/DA I took every attack.

I REALLY like Electric Melee but it has some throw away powers, depending on your preference. I found Jacobs Ladder (narrow cone) to be rather "meh" especially when you consider Thunder Strike (AoE) and Chain Induction (ST with random jump). Maybe with a different animation I'd reconsider, but as it stands I'm dropping Jacobs Ladder.

I have absolutely no use for Lightning Clap on a scrapper. Frankly, I can't a imagine a use for it as a Tanker or Brute. Skippable powers on your primary can be viewed as a positive or a negative. Depends on how you build your character.

My take on /regen versus /wp. /regen gets you into more "Oh crap" situations, but has a number of tools to deal with it. /wp gets you in far less "Oh crap" situations, but doesn't really have much in terms of dealing with those type of situations when it does happen.

I haven't done Elec, but I really like Claws and DB. DB flows so amazing well compared to other sets it's hard to not want to like it so it's probably the most fun set to play. DB is even Claws like in some of it's powers. I like Claws in terms of function better though because it has ranged attacks and if I need something done like knockback, it happens far faster on a Claws scrapper.

If I absolutely had to only play one scrapper, it would be Claws, or Kat/sr, but I fully understand people not liking the idea of soloing an /sr early. It's early end issues are overrated, but it's early damage mitigation is very much rolling weighted dice.

When I came back prior to I14 I built a stone/wp tank to get my feet wet. Willpower is a pretty easy set.

I second Werner's go Kat/WP. capping melee defense by level 10 is pretty nice.

I hear DB is pretty damaging and I think they were designed around each other. Its also a set you didn't have available to you back in the day so its new.

Elec melee is new and I think the consensus is paired with shield should make a pretty impressive toon. Impressive on the bank account as well.

Claws anything really... but since you narrowed it down to regen or WP, then I would go Claws/Regen.
