SD/DM tanker at 50 -- halp!

So, I have this tanker that I busted to 50 during the Season of Slammer Madness, and he's turned out to be my favorite. So much so that I find myself wanting to play it more than fiddle with new colors and powersets, which is saying something.

Anyway, he does amazing in teams. Rock solid. But if I want to solo or even duo during off hours, the cracks begin to show. Namely, endurance issues and a pathetic lack of damage. Bosses at +0 difficulty take a laughably long time.

I looked around fairly extensively for guides on SD/DM, and went back a few pages in this forum, but couldn't find anything.

Any advice or linkage you all can provide would be hugely appreciated.

Here's what my build currently looks like (it's a complete mess, I realize. I'm actually new to the game -- just got trench coats -- so be forgiving of noobish mistakes, please):

Okay, a few things, if I may:

1) You're having problems with damage, but you haven't slotted your attacks with any damage enhancements! Of course you're going to have trouble with your damage output! Slot some damage in your attacks, man! Not only does it help you do damage, but it can also increase your Threat! I usually slot attacks with 3 Damage, 1-2 Acc, Recharge and EndRed to suit.

2) If you're not using set enhancements, you can get away with only one EndRed in each toggle in your Primary set. Weave and Maneuvers should have 2 each. This should free up some slots (except in Deflection, where another DamRes could be good).

3) Active Defense should be slotted for Recharge, not endurance. You want this up all of the time, and with your current slotting, it won't be.

4) Siphon Life is a heal, but it deals really good damage now. Slot it as an attack that has the side benefit of healing you.

5) With Dark Consumption, you shouldn't be having too much trouble in the endurance department. Remember that if you're solo, you probably don't need to be running as many toggles as you would need to on a team, unless you've set your difficulty up. So you might be able to get away with turning Weave and Maneuvers off when soloing, to save your blue bar a bit.

6) You have taken a LOT of extraneous powers, and your secondary power picks have suffered as a result. You've skipped both Shadow Maul and the tier 9 attack (can't remember the name off the top of my head, apologies). Those could greatly improve your damage output. To counter the loss of defense, a few set bonuses can help you there. I'm hoping that Coldmed will come along and offer you a build soon. I don't have Mid's here at work to help you.

Hope these help!

Thanks for the tips!

I actually do have active defense slotted for 3x recharge. I was probably zoning out while throwing the build together in Mid's (I did it without having my character in front of me).

Haha...I figured that was just a mistake, but I wanted to make sure!

Hm, looking at set bonuses -- where's a decent place to find +Ranged Defense from a set? I got melee and AOE for dirt cheap from Multi-strike, but I'm not finding anything by way of ranged defense.

Mako's Bite is a good source, 3.75% ranged def for six slots.

Mako's bite is doing the trick for ranged defense (I'm working up a new build in Mid's).

However. If I drop weave and maneuvers (two really big endurance hogs that I'd like to ditch), I end up short on melee and AOE defense. And that's if I slot every AOE attack I have with Multi-strike.

Any suggestions?

Thanks foreverything so far!

Consider Touch of Death for melee attacks, and swapping out the Multistrikes for Obliterations and Sciroccos. ToD and Obliteration both have 3.75% melee defense for the 6-slot bonus, and Scirocco has 3.13% AoE defense at five slots.

Going to the Body Mastery pool, six slots of Focused Accuracy with Gaussian's gets a big 2.5% defense to all positions. Or you could keep Maneuvers and slot Gaussian's into Tactics.

Also: I do not see the Steadfast Res/Def unique in your build. Buy one, even if it costs you a few million. One IO gives you 3% defense to all positions. Stick it in True Grit or Deflection.

Bear in mind that at the time of this writing, I only have about 30 mil to work with. XD

Some of those sets you're talking about are hella expensive.

EDIT: I'll grab the Steadfast IO. Totally forgot about that.

Blessing of the Zephyr is a good choice for Ranged defense, 3.13% for just two enhancements, and they can be slotted in any travel power, including Hover and CJ. They're a little pricey, but unlike most of the attack sets, you only need two instead of six. Just be sure to stay away from the -KB IO, you don't need it and it's very expensive!

This is what I use on my SD/DM. He's able to tank pretty much anything you throw at him and has great damage output on top of that.
