Positional versus S/L Defense
Someone's figures were that at level 50, S/L was about 1/3 of incoming damage. That was a sheer damage breakdown- so if you got hit by a Rikti blast that was 200 smashing and 200 energy, it would count as half of each.
From a Defense perspective, smashing counts against that attack. (There are some exceptions- Fireball does fire and lethal but is only defended against by fire- but generally you get "Best type" defense.)
It has been my experience that the most common big hitter attacks seem to all have a smashing or lethal component.
My Blaster/Defense experience is pretty much limited to an issue 10 or 11 Blaster with strong S/L/E/N defense. It worked for what I wanted it to do: allow me to (usually) live long enough to commit massive destruction solo, and allow me to pull my weight, plus, in a group.
I didn't build any of my other blasters for defense (typed or otherwise).

In my experience its been better to go for positional defense rather than typed defense. On my Ice/Elec Blaster I have had 38% s/l and it was great, but I like having softcapped typed (ranged) since I initiate attacks from range which lead into holds.
I think its much easier to hit the ranged softcap than it is to hit the typed cap, but then again I could be wrong because I don't go for typed. Depending on your build you can easily hit the ranged capped using Thunderstrikes x 5 in your Blaster attacks, and if you have a set like Elec Manip you can use Mako's x 4 for even more ranged. Add in the Steadfeast unique for another 3% and it starts to add up.
I personally don't care about area of effect damage on Blasters because there aren't enough aoe attacks to worry about outside of Council or Nemesis.

However someone who managed to get around 36% Ranged defense, which is quite easy, and played their blaster well (That lvl 1 immob in your secondary has more use than you'd think!) Would be defending themselves against 80% of Damage.
Yes that is purely ranged damage, but if you play it well, you'll be living a long time (:

When building for Defense, how effective is S/L Def versus Typed Defense? For the blappers, I'd guess that S/L softcap is easier to hit than Ranged, AoE and Melee, but do you spend a lot more time mezzed as a result? Granted, you'll still have your primary attack chain, and that wonderful S/L Def, but do you find yourself down to the restricted chain a lot of the time? For the fliers, I'm assuming Ranged and AoE Defense are a lot more important than Melee, or even S/L? |
