Another question about willpower

I've managed to play my shield/ tank pretty well so far but honestly...it's more powergaming than it is picking a set I enjoy, so I'm just plain not enjoying it so far.

If I wanted to rebuild as a willpower tank focusing on as much regen as (in)humanly possible to get, would I be able to solo an 8-man mission assuming I left difficulty at +0? Maybe focus on some positional defense but...powergaming is killing this game for me. I want to be able to just swim into large mobs, they dont have to be massively high level, I just want to swim

I'm not sure how to answer this, you don't want to power game, but you're asking for results that require a certain level of power gaming to attain. Are you just looking for some more modest goals so that you have more flexibility elsewhere? Is it a conceptually driven build (the focusing on regen bit)?

I'd like to help, but I'm concered what I'd say would be too "power gamey" and potentially ruin your fun.

Yea, it's more of a conceptual character. What I mean by power-gamey is, instead of trying to focus on getting the absolute max numbers to ensure I can wtfbbqpwn the biggest and baddest stuff in the game in 5 seconds flat, I just want to be able to fight on a standard 8-person map set to +0. I want to pick powersets I will enjoy instead of taking ones I don't simply because they have better numbers (aka, Shield Defense...I hate the set but its so strong =/) This will let me focus more on just having fun and not having to worry about being the biggest baddest whatever the heck monster :P

I'll be using some expensive and some not-so-expensive ones. It isn't really the price of the sets that concerns me, I'll do some farming on my way up with friends as I start to finally build my badger. I'm mostly wondering if I'll just be able to do it without trying to go so far overboard with an extreme amount of min/maxing.

Mostly though I want to see what I can do with basic IO's. I don't tend to start picking out real sets until the 40-50 level range so I can get the most out of my sets.

Willpower/Fire, sorry. The "powergaming" tank I made was Shield/Fire...sorta miserable with it honestly. Shields just aren't my thing, I chose them for being "better" and I regretted it pretty fast.

Well, the first thing to keep in mind is that all Tanks kind of suck before SOs.


It's worth noting that /Fire provides great AoE damage, but absolutely no mitigation help. You'll be relying almost entirely on your primary to keep you alive. WP/ offers better survivability earlier. Fully developed Shield/ will end up doing more damage faster. Both can be built to handle x8/+0 eventually.

Yea, I know /Fire won't help me survive, it will just help me kill faster. I figure WP/ is a pretty good way to survive all on its own. I was considering /SS somewhat but wasn't really sure about it. I know that it provides a pretty hefty chunk of damage once setup for rage, and that it's a fairly powerful AoE set once you get access to Foot Stomp, it's just getting there that becomes the issue.

Also, of course, /SS doesn't fit into the concept of Twilight Pyromancer all that well :P

IMO, Willpower is if anything a stronger set than Shields. It gets tougher earlier, can sustain your offense better, and also exemps down better than Shields does; although that is less of a concern with i16 on tap.

My Spines/Willpower scrapper is my character of choice when soloing maps set for full teams. That character can handle them easily and in reasonable safety. A Willpower tanker with an AoE focused attack set should be able to do the same job, somewhat more slowly and even safer.

Any ideas on if /SS would be an even better set than /Fire for trying to solo? I imagine the constant knockdown of footstomp and the juggling abilities of the rest of the set would certainly help survivability. The question is would giving up the extra AoE and damage of /Fire be worth it? I managed to make a second character so I can use a decent concept for either of them...it's just a matter of figuring out which would serve me better.

My first question to you is - what level are you?

My Shield/SS is level 35 and I've been running on that setting without any real difficulty for the past couple of levels, a Shield/Fire could do the same.

If you haven't got Shield Charge yet wait till you do before you decide to give up on the set - it always puts a smile on my face.

If you do decide to go with something else I'd say the big question is whether you want the character to be great against some mobs and weak against others or do you want to be good but not great against all.

Personally I prefer to be able to go into a mission and be able to take the mob down irrespective of what they are and their damage type -psi etc.
Shields with it's positional defence does this.

My Ice/EM is great against all but Psi and to a lesser degree fire which I find incredibly annoying. I'm currently buiding for ranged defence to help negate this as most psi is ranged.

As I said something to bear in mind if you look elsewhere.

Also as a footnote if you only want to solo at the setting specified and are prepared to wait a bit longer a Scrapper could also do this but at a quicker rate.

My DM/SR Scrapper is soft capped with only one IO set and the +def unique and would have no issue soloing at a higher level than this.

At this point, my personal opinion is that you're overthinking this quite severely. If you want to choose sets for optimal performance, we can certainly help you with that. But at the lower bound you've set, anything will work, so you needn't worry about it so much.

Tanker primaries and secondaries tend to trade off in a fairly regular way between offense and survivability. Shields and Super Strength are moderate outliers when fully developed: they provide a little more damage than you'd expect from their mitigation capability, and vice versa. But you don't need outlier sets to reach the level of performance you indicate would be satisfactory. Play what you enjoy, and performance will take care of itself. Just be sure not to evaluate any tanker before they reach SOs, as the shift in performance is dramatic, and don't expect to be taking on immense levels of challenge before the character is fully developed. In particular, I don't think it's realistic to be taking on x8/+0 before level 30*.

*Note that this is an off-the-cuff estimate across all powersets, and I'm sure someone will be along to post a specific Tanker build that can handle x8/+0 before that level.

A WP tank with tough / weave / combat jumping / steadfast unqiue and all primary powers besides resurgence and strength of will should be able to handle most anything in the game at +0 con. Of course throw tough / weave / combat jumping / steadfast unique on any tank in combination with their primary powers and they will be able to handle +0 con with ease.

The best thing you could do is focus on +def and +hp actually.

As for offense, since you won't need more mitigation from the secondary once you get setup with those power picks and some +hp, fire would be perfectly fine.


I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.
