Could use some tank advice for soloing 8-man/+4 missions

Well I made a post on the scrapper forum, now it's the tanks turn. They gave me their ideas and now I want yours

Tank is generally my preferred melee character over scrapper, mainly because I can survive pretty much anything. However I am quite aware that tank damage can be...underwhelming at times. However, the ability to swim into mobs and (mostly) not have to even watch your HP is a bit of a nice bonus.

My question is, what sort of setups do you think could swim into the new i16 fully maxed out mobs solo and come out on top? My general idea was either a soft-capped shield defense or a nearly soft-capped willpower. Both have some fairly obvious advantages (those being damage and regen of course) but figuring out a primary to stack with either is throwing me off.

Dark Melee is always good, drops their accuracy, but very little AoE power. Super Strength is always an option of course, but if you hit a rage crash in the middle of an army of purples you might not walk out of it. Electric Melee actually seemed a possability also, it has some nice AoE ability even if it is a little lacking in single-target ability.

Any ideas on the best way to do this?

I have done +4 lvl 8 man maps with my shield/ss tank no problem. Rage makes hitting +4s accurately less of an issue. The Rage crash isn't an issue if Rage stacks at least for a couple seconds, then there's no -def factor. You just have to be prepared for the -20 end and lack of damage for a little while. Personally I use Melt Armor on that build, not huge difference but sure helps with +4s for some extra damage. Footstomp is up often and has very reliable Knock down.
DM is great with high level enemies as long as your Soul Drain hits, one suggestion is to take and slot up Focus Acc, and just toggle it on to hit Soul Drain, then turn it back off to avoid the End/sec of that toggle. DM is lacking the AoE department, but is good for survivability.
Willpower is nice if you're softcapped, just be careful of alpha strikes. Shield is easy to softcap and still have room in a good build for Aid Self if you don't take DM for that heal. Invuln is nice with its added +to-hit, high HP, self heal, high s/l resists and softcapped def potential. I think a lot of the primaries can keep you alive, even a well built electric armor, its more of a matter of being able to defeat the mobs without taking an extreme amount of time, and/or running out of end doing it.

I'd try an Inv/Fire for that. Fire is the chief pure damage and AoE set that tankers get, and Inv should be more than adequately tough, especially when surrounded by mobs, to make up for your lack of mitigation or control.

Electric may be good as a secondary when it goes live. It seems to have a lot of AoE. Axe and Mace are also worth looking into.

The main thing I would go for is to get at least two, possibly all three, of the recovery uniques and Performance Shifter on top of fully slotted Stamina. The issue will not be so much survivability but staying in the fights long enough to finish them.

Hmm...I wonder how hard it would be to soft-cap a Willpower without giving to much up in the process? Considering soft-capping makes you (generally) get hit pretty rarely the massive regen would more than likely refill your hp bar between the hits you do take. On the other hand Willpower doesn't do nearly as much good as, say, Shield Defense when you haven't actually taken damage.

Shields would give me a better overall kill speed and is VERY easy to softcap (on a tanker you don't even need the +3% IO's, may or may not need them for a scrapper) but if I get hit I'm going to need to get healing on my own. On the other hand, Willpower will give me the endurance I need to sustain the long fights with an army of grapes as well as recover me when I do get hit, but it's a lot harder to softcap and won't give me any damage benefit at all.

Also, when trying to soft-cap, if your going tank/scrapper is Melee the best one to shoot for since thats where you are? On a Shield it doesn't matter, you can soft-cap all positional defenses very easily. But on a Willpower I'm not so sure you can soft-cap all three.

I suppose the fact that I can't decide what to play means the company is doing a good job. If there was only one choice to make it wouldn't be very much fun now would it?

Shield/fire... and run on a "6" team setting to minimize bosses. Faster kill speed means more baddies and chance for drops. If you are solo... you get all the inspirations too, so getting/making greens is not an issue.

You can soft cap easily and be near the HP cap with accolades and bonuses.

Agree with Heraclea -- Invulnerability with enough typed defense IO sets is probably the strongest primary that doesn't hurt your damage output. Fire is probably the best AoE Tanker secondary. Not only that, it feels better in long fights because the extra damage ticks from most of the attacks aren't "wasted" -- you're really getting the full potential out of it.

Thanks for the extra replies. An odd question: if you take Shield Defense, do you really need Weave? It's more icing on the cake than an actual needed thing as far as I can tell. On the other hand, taking a tank without weave just seems...I dunno...wrong somehow?

Also, how do you deal with confuse/fear when playing Shields over Willpower? I'm so used to Willpower I forget negative effects even exist most of the time.

[edit] And also, is /Fire going to put out more damage than a double-raged /SS tank? I only ask because /SS seems to be the "uber" popular set right now so there has to be a reason I suppose.

Fear/Confuse is rarely seen in game so I don't worry about it on any character, especially not a defense soft capped character.

Shields should take weave since it cuts down on the number of IOs to reach soft cap.

Fire and Electric would be your best bets for aoe damage, but surprisingly Ice looks better when combined with shields due to AAO + Shield Charge helping bring up the AoE damage.

PLEASE READ EVERYTHING I PUT BEFORE YOU START CRITICIZING ME

BUILD 1:
Well I can guarantee that with a stone tanker you will survive anything can throw at you the only problem with a stone tanker is- you run very slow unless you have a kin with you and your DPS straight up sucks. I know people that go with stone armor and fire melee and they can take a lot and do some pretty good damage. The only problem is the stone armor needs a kin or else you are a turtle, but slow and steady wins the race lol

BUILD 2:
Also I suggest trying Fire/Ice tanker, They can take alot and deal alot if you have tough and acrobatics for your knockback.

The great thing about both builds are you really don't need set bonuses. The problem with the stone is they are turtles but if you choose a good damage melee power set like fire then you just have to worry about speed.

BUILD 3 AND 4:
INVUL
. is okay. I wouldn't say the best and Shields are known for hitting a "cap" you could say about taking damage. when you play a shield its more of kill my enemies before they get a chance to kill me and oh yeah, I can take a few hits (about as much as some scrapper or just a lil more) but after that I'm a red stain.

BUILD 5:
If you want a challenge, try out a fire fire tank
, you will do loads of DPS but there are two main problems with a fire fire.

1. you need to get tough and have some way of getting some type of kb resist or else your on the floor all the time.
2. You need to play with strategy, that's what makes a fire fire so much more fun.

I've never done an 8-man team solo on a fire fire since before ED so I am not sure how well that will work out for you but I suggest checking it out.

EDIT: Check out energy melee, I heard it's pretty dang good for someone who wants to solo but I have never made an energy melee myself. (just check it out if you have time, I know a lot of tankers that really do enjoy it.)

A Shield tanker, with Weave, is only about 2.5% short of the soft cap with standard SO slotting so yes you can get there without Weave if you invest in moderate IO bonuses. With Weave all you need is a Steadfast Unique.

Confuse/Fear is so incredibly rare that you can for the most part completely forget about it. I can only think of one named boss in the entire game (heroside, I haven't played redside enough to know for sure) who uses confuse; a Vahz named boss in the level 15-20 range. Fear is only slightly more common with maybe a half dozen mobs in the game who use it. Hmm, Ghost Widow has a fear... I'm drawing a blank on other fear using mobs but I recall seeing one or two.

Fire Melee has more AOE damage than any other tanker secondary; it'll kill groups much faster than /SS... and it matures much earlier. /SS does offer more single target damage and Foot Stomp is a really nice AOE but Fire has three fairly nice AOE's, two PBAOE and one cone.

Really though, if you're looking for a primarily solo character you'll probably be happier with a Scrapper... I love playing tanks but they really shine in teams; scrappers are better solo. The extra survivability of a tanker is mostly a moot point when you're solo.

Also your 8 man/+4 setting isn't optimal for either AT... +4 mobs just take too long to kill for the XP/Inf value. For a mature build I'd suggest no more than +2 mobs for the best reward/minute ratio. Remember that Tankers will kill slower than Scrappers. You may get more xp for that +4 mob than the +2, but if it takes 50% longer to kill the +4, which it probably will, you're getting less xp per hour.

I asked these same questions on the scrapper forums and they told me point blank to avoid playing a scrapper until I build up a sizable amount of money if I wanted to solo at +8 reasonably well. I figure maybe play the Tanker until I get the cash, then rebuild as a scrapper, dunno. The extra 1000+ HP makes me think I may stick with the safer route no matter what choices I end up with.

And how does fire have 3 AoE, 2 PBAoE and a cone? I see 4 single targets, 2 AoE and 1 cone. And then taunt and buildup of course. Unless I'm missing something? I could be, wouldn't be the first time.

Fire has three AOE attacks, two of which are PBAOE (Combustion & Fire Sword Circle) and one of which (Breath of Fire) is a cone.

Frankly on the soloing 8 man missions neither scrappers or tankers are going to be good at it until late in your career. The scrapper will have problems with survivability until your secondary matures and the tanker will have problems with killing the mobs fast enough.

An uber IO build isn't needed to solo missions by any stretch of the imagination... people were soloing 6-8 man maps on scrappers back before IO's even existed. Now, that's a mature, optimized build played by an experienced player. IO's have simply raised the bar on what's possible.

Inf really shouldn't be that much of an issue; with the prices in Wentworth's now selling your salvage should give you plenty. One trick I've found is running 2-3 AE missions and trading the tickets in on 25-40 common Arcane salvage... 4,000 tickets should translate into well over $20 million inf.

Ah, now I get the fire thing, I just read it wrong.

Anyway, going to be giving mass rep soon since I'm about finished with the thread I just need to decide on Shield or WP with /Fire and I'll be on my way and out of your hair. Sadly picking between my two favorite tanking sets is not easy.

Not to muddle things up, but Heraclea had a point about Inv/Fire. Even in SOs, it is a really strong combo for what you are looking for. If I don't make a Elec Armor tank I like more, I am probably going to start IOing the crap out of mine.

Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.

I don't doubt that Inv is plenty powerful, it's just never been a set I enjoyed playing. Not really sure why I didn't like it though, I just had to much trouble getting into it.

Anyway, this is what I've come up with so far. I did manage to soft-cap all positional defenses and got about 3.5/s recovery with a 1.3/s drain. Not really sure how sustainable that is with attacking over the course of a long-term battle though. The steadfast protection also isn't strictly required but having a little buffer against defense debuff seemed a good idea for one slot. Anyway, let me know what you think.

Right. +4s aren't for farming, they're for challenge...or for bragging rights.

I happen to like challenge. I just need to find out if I have a build that can take said challenge without face planting.

But you are right, I did forget that +4 isn't really ideal farming conditions.

Well, there's always that

Nice as a stress test or for braggin' rights but not something I'd run as a matter of course. I have run 8 man/+4 on both my Inv/Stone and BS/Shield for the stress test purpose... both could DO it with some difficulty, but it just took too long.

Heck, I made up an AE mission purely for challenge; it's Freaks on a fairly sizeable indoor tech map. The last room contains 4 defendable objects with over 50 mobs guarding them; and it also has I think 30 triggered ambushes when you reach that room. When you get there you're going to be swarmed by the aggro cap of mobs for however long it takes you to kill off a couple hundred mobs.

Since the freak nerf I'll probably change the mob type... unfortunate since I really like Freaks and their rez makes for even more challenge.

Yea, endurance missions are fun.

Anyway, I did some mods, fit in phalanx for the extra 5% defense. I'm not fully slotted yet and have some IO's in there just as tests on this new build, BUT...do I need to make room for Grant Cover? As a soloer I know I won't need the cover part, but the defense debuff defense might be kinda nice to have. Problem is I have no clue what to replace. All I can see able to be removed is either Incinerate or Greater Fire Sword. But I would hate to give one of those up, and the other high-end powers seem needed. Any ideas?

I generally aim for a surplus of around 2.5 end/sec above endurance costs. This will be a major issue if you want to try to solo large mob herds.

Whether you want Grant Cover or not while soloing depends on what you're soloing. If it has very little defense debuff it may not be worth the cost.

Certainly makes sense. Anyway, I think I have a finalized build for my tank. Any ideas on it?

I did manag to get a 2.3 end/sec overage, was trying to find a way to squeek out .2 more but did not see a place I could do it easily. Sticking another EndMod into physical perfection would do it but I saw no way to move it down before 49.

The only thing I am still unsure of at all is taking both incinerate and greater fire sword. Do you need both?

What bonuses are you going for on this, looks like damage?

On my Shield/Super Strengh after capping defence I'll be going for Recharge and Regeneration.
Recharge will boost the damage and Regen for survivablility.

I was going for positional defenses. After that I went for endurance recovery. the damage was actually a nice accidental side-effect.

If you mean any villain group, and without being at much risk, I'm not sure what to tell you. You're looking at heavy IO investment to get both strong resistances and high defense. And I still advise you not to look away from the screen, and go in with plenty of inspirations, purple or green.

Both Arachnos and Carnies will hit you hard with psionics, energy, and smashing/lethal, most of it from range. Arachnos will tend to blind you repeatedly as well. Even mere lieutenant Carnies will summon phantasms and such, and the lieutenant steel strongmen will heavily resist smashing/lethal damage.

Maybe willpower is the way to go, because the high regen from big groups protects against all attack forms, and there's a generous amount of psionic protection. Also, the tier 9 strength of will power won't crash very hard. No damage aura though. Foot Stomp helps a lot when blinded, so maybe super-strength is the secondary for you.
