You have to have an active account to even log in. I tried to log in to check my previous PMs after the forum switch but could not because my account was inactive. Of course it didn't tell me this, I had to find out by opening a trial account and using it to post & play and see what changed.
That's not a change. You've always needed an active account in order to post.
What did change from the old forums re: logging in is that the forums now use the same login info as your game account.

As long as you didn't log off the old boards or your cookies didn't expire that was true with the old boards. I think I went 2 months once before something knocked me off. Now I found out that indeed if you aren't an active account, poof, you have no status what so ever with the new boards (had an inactive account for about 1 1/2 hours, took another hour or so before the boards knew I reupped).

Are you sure you didn't log in on a reactivation weekend, when inactive accounts were set to active?

A friend of mine is having trouble logging into the forums. We think its because his CoH account is currently inactive. Does anyone know if that's true? (They do use the same login name and password, right?)
