Something that everyone in this thread has assumed so far is that the cause can only spread through physical contact... what about a virus that's akin to the flu, where it can survive out of the body for quite a while... simply going into an area that PREVIOUSLY had a zombie could turn you! And even worse, what if it was airborne like in I Am Legend?
And another possibility, what if it was able to jump species? We wouldn't just have to be worried about human-zombies... we might even have to be worried about mosquitoes (yeah, we'd be pretty damn screwed on most of the planet)!
Also, don't forget that basically all zombies, even the slow ones, are sneaky as hell! They're more than willing to wait excessive amounts of time while hiding in the shadows, waiting for you to think you're safe! Of course, the fast ones are basically pure nightmare fuel... 
Odds are, you won't be lucky enough to be turned, you'll probably just end up being eaten alive (like what happened to one of the guys in Shawn of the Dead... he stood too close to a window and got pulled out by a hoard of zombies, and they began ripping out his intestines while he was still alive... or even worse, what happened to the mom in 28 weeks later...
)
