Dark Melee / Electric Armor
Couple of things:
- Electric Armor is set to get a buff in issue 16, which should help you deal with the alpha.
- All resistances cap at 90%. You have 90% resistance to energy.
- Dark Obliteration is a nice attack. You'll usually rely on darkest night on hard attacks, but if you're not planning on regularly going toe to toe with AV's, I wouldn't recommend it over Dark Obliteration, but I like having a good kill speed.
- If you are building for defense, I would either focus on Smashing/Lethal or Melee. You can get one of these in the 30s without gimping yourself.
- Siphon life has a base heal of 10%. If you slotted it for healing, you're missing out on some damage potential. If you're looking at a recharge build, 5 crushings paired with a hami heal/end work nicely.

I just recently made a dm/elA and I was wondering how they are together. I know elA has huge holes in it as a set but I thought DM would help with siphon life -- granted it only heals like 19% of health it still helps. So I made a build on mids taking soul mastery, fighting, fitness, speed, etc. and I got myself to 57% resistance to s/l, 42% res to fire/cold/neg/psionic, and 96% to energy. I also have like 15-25% defense to most everything. I was wondering if this would be high enough to take the alpha? I'll have power surge on for 3 minutes, and then a 2 minute or so cooldown. I was also wondering if its possible to completely sap big groups in a long fight. It seems easily possible if I use power sink like twice. Ooh and would you all suggest taking Dark Obliteration for a 3rd AoE, or darkest night? Thanks in advance! |
EDIT* Dark Consumption will also help rid you of the need for stamina. Especially with lightning reflexes making it recharge faster

Not really sure what you are calling your first and second AoE. Soul Drain and Dark Consumption take too long to recharge to really put in any kind of attack chain. Dark Obliteration is really nice tho. Darkest night is good too, like Tonality said, if you are going against AVs a lot, or running boss farms solo, but other than that, I wouldn't bother.
Sapping big groups is very possible if you slot the crap out of power sink. Not sure on IO slotting on it tho. The only thing is, it shouldn't be much of an issue, minions are sapped easily, but the ones that your really want to sap, Lt.s, Bosses and AVs, well, you won't get nearly as far with them. It really just depends on the groups. If you are planning on farming, I wouldn't count on that as a mitigation tool. In normal content, yeah, on all the little stuff it will work well.
Post your build tho, will make it easier for folks to make suggestions, or see where you can tweak it. If you are working on S/L defense(I would suggest it, as it is easiest to get softcapped), 4 Kinetic Combats in your ST attacks, 4 reactive armors in your resistance powers.
Personally, I would work towards getting softcapped and drop Power Surge, don't get me wrong, Power Surge has it's uses, but I really hate that big crash. Just my personal preference tho, I skip the "god mode" crash powers on all my toons. Normally, if I am in a situation where it would really help, I would have died with it anyway.
On the topic of fitness on an ELA, you won't need it. Sorta. After you get power sink and you get it slotted for recharge and later end mod, you won't need stamina. And Energize being added with a 2min recharge will help that even more. So just keep that in mind when you get this character up into the thirties, because you can free up space for some more useful powers. Just keep in mind that you will still need to slot like any other brute and keep some amount of end discount on your attacks and toggles.
EDIT* Dark Consumption will also help rid you of the need for stamina. Especially with lightning reflexes making it recharge faster |

But the biggest reason for getting stam. There will be situations where there is only one mob to draw off of.
Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.
Okay so I got myself up to 31% s/l defense and about 20% melee defense . Thanks for the help everyone. I have absolutely 0 extra global recharge apart from hasten and lightning reflexes. By my first and second AoE I did mean dark consumption and soul drain which are up every 67 seconds and 49 seconds respectively. Power sink has a 30 second cooldown and Power surge has a 2.45 minute cooldown. I like the big t9 powers, even if there is a crash, and on power surge it leaves you with some health and end, so while everyone is held from the EM pulse, I can just power sink and siphon life. And if the whole thing about "energize" is true, then that's awesome!! Also, for AoEs I have lightning field. With soul drain on it does good damage (24/2seconds is it? or /1 second? and with full fury it will ROCK.) So heres my build!!

Sorry that doesn't show up well so just use the link to open it up in mids...
I was wondering if this would be high enough to take the alpha? I'll have power surge on for 3 minutes, and then a 2 minute or so cooldown.
|
Also, Power Surge has a 16 minute, 40 second recharge. I'm not sure what you mean by 2 minute cooldown, as I can't imagine having THAT much global +Recharge.
- Siphon life has a base heal of 10%. If you slotted it for healing, you're missing out on some damage potential. If you're looking at a recharge build, 5 crushings paired with a hami heal/end work nicely.
|
Having said that, Energize slotted will be a 50% heal every 60 seconds, so I might slot Siphon Life a bit differently when that change makes it to live.
Got my Dark/Elec to 35 last night and was expecting Rikti to be juuuust a bit more difficult. The bosses barely hurt, even on Relentless, which is a HUGE difference from when I leveled my Willpower a while back. Still the issue of hitting the Drones, but that's nothing a little Soul Drain can't fix.
Well, yeah, you COULD get by without stamina. But to say wholesale that Elec Armor doesn't need stamina, well, I am going to disagree with you.
See, if you take stam, you can generally drop the end redux slotting in your powers and increase your damage output by putting recharge in them. Plus, I don't like watching my blue bar much, so stam is a nice buffer. Fitness is a good idea anyway, as health is a nice boost to the anemic regen of /ElA. But the biggest reason for getting stam. There will be situations where there is only one mob to draw off of. |
My Dark/Elec was originally Dark/Energy before I made the switch from defense to resist, and that build did indeed have Stamina, Dark Consumption, Energy Drain, Conserve Power and Endurance Reduction Enhancements in every power. Guess what? The blue bar kept going down; somewhat quickly. I relied on Energy Drain and, to a lesser extent, Dark Consumption to keep it topped off.
Sounds like I'm agreeing with you, doesn't it? (-:
The point here is that even WITH Stamina and EndRdx Enhancements, my Endurance still fizzled out like a blue rose during a drought. It wasn't an immediate exhaustion, but it was certainly enough of a drain that taking those Enhancements out would have been a bad thing. None of the attacks had Recharge Enhancements; the only +Recharge I got was from Hasten.
To summarize the above paragraph: Stamina is not powerful enough to remove EndRdx from Dark Melee, let alone replacing them with Recharges.
Now, the flipside of that coin is that my Endurance was always at a good level. This was due mostly because of Energy Drain, and in some situations where Energy Drain was not available, there was still Dark Consumption and I never--I repeat, NEVER--had to worry about my Endurance going dry.
When I re-rolled as Electric Armor, I kept Hurdle, because my character was Huge and didn't feel like he jumped high enough without it... And I kept Health, because my Primary and Secondary powersets weren't sufficient to keep my HP full all the time... But I dropped Stamina because my Primary and Secondary powers WERE sufficient to keep my Endurance full all the time.
As for situations where there's only one enemy to draw from, well... you have two powers that give +25 Endurance base; +50 slotted. It's not an understatement to suggest that you can in fact recover ALL your endurance on that single AV or whatever you happen to be fighting.
Aha. Be sure to take Hasten's downtime into account as well. Hasten lasts for 120 seconds, whereas Power Surge lasts for 180. Hasten will be gone long before Power Surge recharges.
So if hasten goes off during it or before, how long do you think the downtime could be? =/
Let's see...
Power Surge has a rechage time of 1000s base. Let's say it's Enhanced +100% and has Lightning Reflexes's +20% on it. This brings the recharge to +120% and 455s without Hasten.
Hasten gives +70% Recharge for 120 seconds. Applied to the base recharge, it'd be +190% and 345s. However, only 120s of that is actually buffed, leaving 225s. Un-do the math and we get 652s of the base recharge time, which only gets the +120% buff for a net remaining recharge time of 296s. Add back the 120s from Hasten and you get a net total recharge time of 416s.
Without Hasten, Power Surge will recharge in 455s.
If you use Hasten after Power Surge begins recharging, the total recharge will be 416s.
Therefore, using Hasten will save you 38s from Power Surge's total recharge time.
With Hasten in the mix, Power Surge will have a 3 minute, 56-second downtime. This is closer to 4 minutes than 2.
Well, i guess thats okay now that i'll have some good defense in the mix. Has anyone been able to check out my build? and thanks for doing all of that math, guy
