Change the Forum "Rating" System

Ok, before I go on a mini rant, its not because there's a Red Dot on me, it just got me thinking.

1. I don't like that it's blind. Yea, it helps from greifing, but when you get a comment (or in some cases NO comment on your post) like "yada yada yada" (That was one of mine) It really makes me mad that someone can do that.

Any forum argument can just turn into a "rep war" where the 2 just hit "disapprove" and spam "approve/disapprove" on other people until they can hit "disapprove" on you again.

2. I don't like how no one can see how many "rep points" where given, if they were good or bad, or for what posts where "commented" on. Isn't the whole point of rating someone good or bad is to let people know how you are.

Someone could have 4 green dots on them and be a complete jerk. Someone with 4 red dots could be the nicest person in the world. There's no knowing...

3. I don't like that someone can just slap any 'ol rating onto you even if they were just trying to "Spread the Rep Around before Rating <insert user here> again"

I don't want 3 green dots if I didn't think I earned them, nor do I want 3 red dots for trying to prove a point or view I may have on an issue.

anyways /rantoff. Any comments on this is fully welcome though I don't think I'll be checking back in on this thread to comment again...
Just want to throw this out there.

The only viable solution to fixing the rep system that's ever going to genuinely work is, frankly... switching it off in your UserCP. That's it. The system isn't perfect, and never will be, no matter how many 'fixes' anyone wants applied. And it's not like anyone's really taking it seriously, are they? Look at the Forum Games. :\

Besides, the solutions to your complaints would do more harm than good. Anonymity gets axed, you'll have people revenge-deducting, for example. Hardly what you were hoping for, were you?

You cannot "earn" green dots except by truckling to the demands (sincere or specious) of others. 2 million "rep" points from a million fools are worth what, exactly?

The only useful solution to concerns about rating systems in internet forums is to have no concern at all about internet rating systems.

I have little doubt that in time the 'rep' system will go the way of the stars system on the old forums.

The more rep farming type threads that appear, for me means the sooner that day will come.

Actually, the forum administrators can disable the rep system completely.

Given that they disabled a similar system on the old forums, I really don't understand why they've decided to leave it enabled here on the new ones. Frankly, I'm surprised that the mods haven't been inundated with reports of griefing, trolling, and flaming... all behaviors that have been stated to be against forum policy, even in the rep comments.

*shrug*

Meh, someone's bound to cry if it's turned off, so I didn't consider it viable. >.>

I turned mine off and never looked back. I'm surprised more people haven't.

I don't see what the big deal is with the rating system. I mean seriously.. who cares. What one person views as trolling or w/e, another person might see as simply expressing a different opinion. With so many different pple using the forums its impossible to adhere to what everyone views as "nice, polite, etc..." so why even bother. I haven't turned mine off but its not like I pay attention to it either, I will continue to express my thoughts and opinions no matter what ANYONE says or thinks. I would suggest everybody else does the same, because u'll drive urself crazy if u start fretting over what random pple on a forum think of u.
