Base crafting/items use invention salvage now, so what you're actually doing is converting base salvage into invention salvage. As to what you can do with it:
Sell it as is
Convert to brainstorm, sell
Conver to brainstorm, convert to invention salvage, sell
Convert to brainstorm, convert to invention salvage, use as usual

At first it was a REALLY sweet deal - as this conversion process counted towards "inventions crafted" badges. Sadly, that was stopped rather abruptly.
Only really annoying part was that at the same time, the maximum any SG salvage rack could hold was reduced. Alot. So if you took a lot of SG salvage out... can't put it back.

You wouldn't be converting it back into base salvage, you'd be converting it into invention salvage. In and of itself, base salvage has no function any more. Nevertheless, some people do collect them, so you may be able to get a good price for some pieces on the market. Otherwise, convert to invention salvage for use or sale.

The base salvage itself may be valuable, especially the rare pieces.
When converted to brainstorms, these can also be sold.

You can convert into rare salvage at something like 20 brainstorms:1 rare salvage.
But yeah, you are kind of stuck with Betamax salvage.
