A lot of people simply don't want to be found and pestered with blind invites by showing up in the search window. Thus they /hide.
Possible that you've run across RMTers. Or possibly they're non-english-speaking players whose names are attempts at phonetic spellings.
Additionally, /search is NOT the only tool for putting together a team.

That said, all my characters (currently ranging between level 33 and 40 heroside on Defiant and 16-20 villainside on Union) are hidden and has been for years. Those have real names though, as well as costumes and are all in my personal SGs (one on each side/server).
I'm soloing 99% of the time or so, and found all the blind invites back when I started annoying - especially since some people back then (no names since that would be against the forum rules but one of them was a fairly well known and disliked player) wouldn't take no for an answer. I'd decline, then 1-2 minutes later another invite from the same person would come. I'd decline again and send a tell that I wasn't interested. Then a few minutes later, yet another invite would come. It just got too much so I went on /hide as soon as I found out you could and been there since (I got my 48 month vet rewards this week).
Its slightly strange i only seem them on the villain side, and why on earth on Defiant? Ok based on their numbers (i did a 45-50 checkup on /sea, BIG majority is corrupter), they seem to only party with eachother.

I even PM'ed one next to me at the BM, he just stood there. Eventualy he jumped off and headed into AE mission. (i felt like a stalker there :P).

you do see them on heroes in AE/AH with there fire/kin and fire/FF trollers...fun fun

Was just tossing around on defiant, i was in cap and did a /sea. 4 people showed up (including me), but when i checked up my sales on AH, there were like 10 people standing there and non of them were found on search.
Mostly blank characters, dot in the name or very weird names, costumes seems randomly picked (the random button). Basicly no IO bonus, mid 40's or 'blue' 50s just standing there. Non i have found to be in a SG.
Teaming is a plain nightmare already, but what are these doing here?
