It's super hard to read the text beneath the pictures
any idea on how to fix it?

Make it a different colour maybe? 
More contrast! Even a lighter blue might work.
Character references! Artz! Whatnot!

I pretty much find any colour on a black background to be a strain on the eyes.

Yeah just change the dark blue to either a light blue or white. Either would fit just fine with the image.

Repurposed
I changed it to white and made the letters bigger. I also used thicker lettres since part of the problem was that when I saved it the letters got skiiner :P

That's better. 
Next issue, and I'm not sure if it's just my display or not, but it'd probably help a little more if you screenied your char against a lighter background. The costume editor backdrop's making me squint a little hard at it, and I've only just managed to shift a stubborn headache, so not good getting it back. :|
A random wall in Atlas should do the trick. Just a suggestion though.
