Wow, people are going nuts for your artwork, cant blame them though . I personally didn't notice the short legs untill it was pointed out to me >.< so it cant be too bad.

Anyways, cant wait to see what happens next, just don't burn out!

Wow i didnt even notice the legs and still don't hehe. Looks really nice all the art .

Thanks you guys! Sorry I didn't post at all yesterday. I was playing CoH all day with a friend of mine.

I'll openly admit that I'm in a real slump at the moment due to a comment I received on DA, which is resulting in me not knowing where to go with my art. It hurts quite a bit, so I'm trying to recover from it.

Was it a critique?

Or was it just someone randomly being a ********?

I can tell you having been around art all my life, that your art is very nicely done. Sure there are some things that you might want to personally put a polish on but don't let the odd comments get ya down. Mark that up to jealousy bruh!

Haha, I understand what you mean. It was more along the lines of 'your older art was better, your newer stuff isn't as good.' While I know my newer style doesn't appeal to the masses as much, I still feel like I'm a much better artist now, at least in technical aspects. I don't draw in anime/manga style anymore, so I know that's one part that many of my watchers miss.
It really boils down to what's more important to me: the audience, or myself?

I really hope this isn't derailing the thread! It's still about artwork. I'll be doing a picture or two today, hopefully.

BOOOO! HSSSSSSSS!!! I think it's safe to say that people here are greatly enjoying and very appreciative of your art. My art tends to look like stick figures or spiral doodles so I'm jealous of all the artists on these forums that can draw things that actual resemble objects. I hope these words of appreciation can help.

[Well...i started posting before Pirate responded....oh well, Will leave as is]

Listen..

Draw for yourself. Don't let the comments get to you. Your style is going to keep envolving and some people will like it then some people won't. But the key here is that it's your style. When an artist is having fun it really shows through their art and I can promise you that with the pieces you have done in this thread, it shows.

Your art is going to take on many styles i am guessing. I have seen it a hundred times and it's always for the better. Let your inspiration carry you and take on the critiques that call to you. The rest is just people's opinion on their preference in art.

Keep rockin, you have an amazing gift and as you can see in this thread, people do love it.

I think, if they were totally truthfully, all but a very, very, very tiny minority of artists would have to admit that they do their art for both: The audiance and for themselves. Everyone likes to be appreciated, to have their talent/skill/whatever recognized and applauded. And artists of whatever sort, generally, tend to have wider swings in their view of themselves and their talent then others, swinging between egomaniacs who cannot believe they haven't been discovered yet and deep depression when they think all their stuff is crap and they should give it up. Or at least swinging somewhere between those points.

Anyway, I am starting my inevitable rambling... My point is that of course you want to please the audience but you have to please yourself first. If you strive just to please the audience then even if you suceed you're never be satisfied. If you strive to please yourself you will at least have that satisfaction to give you some endurance to suffer through finding your audience... Or waiting for your audience to find you.

Besides, when you have a style of your own as opposed to just mimicking what is popular then you will always rub some people the wrong way. Some just want what they're used to and you won't satisfy them unless you give it to them. Course that tends to be boring even if it is more widely accepted.

As for derailing the thread... Dude, it's your thread. Derail all you want.

Cashoo!! We are totally enjoying your arts here and we want to see more! So whom ever was crude to you on DA is a curmudgeon and is probably not an artist or is a lousy artist! So remove that that rude post from your DA page and tell that curmudgeon to go pound sand! And with that said, I want to see more of your arts!!!

I love this word.

Seriously Your artwork is amazing. and I've seen a progression of it just since you started this thread.

I love your art here, and I've seen that you've experimented and improved.

One thing with experimenting is that it'll go wrong. Probably more often than going right. But it's done to get better and get it right (is there such a thing in art?)

What you do with critique is of course up to you, but here are some pointers:
- Consider the source.
Friends and family tend to praise and encourage. While nice, they don't generally point out things that could be improved upon.
Random Strangers can both be a source of unbiased feed back, as well as a source for utter bullocks.

- Consider the validity
If someone calls you a jerk, shrug it off, if 5 people call you a jerk, there might be something in that makes you seem like one (even be one?). That was just an example, but it fits, just replace 'jerk' with what ever you like: brilliant, talented, nice, ugly, smart, rich, a hero, a villain... you name it. (Just be careful when it's something like "President of the USA" )
So, one Commenter says that your current are isn't as good as your older work. You think you've improved, just using a different style with better techniques. By my estimation, you've considered the validity of his feedback and considered it inaccurate.

- Don't be afraid to ask.
If something's not clear or you don't agree with some feedback, don't be afraid to ask someone why they think so.
What is it that makes your older work 'better' according to him? Is it just style, or does he have things to point out like composition, framing, anatomy or technique?
Ask someone else what (s)he thinks of the critique given, if they agree or not.
As a bonus, asking questions also tends to make it easier to see how valid the critique is

Um, well... I do believe I'd have been easier off copying a textbook, but hey, didn't have mine handy

So I say, listen to the people here as well and take heart!
We wuv your art and your skill, and your style too!

Artistic styles evolve over time, happens to everyone. If you like your current style then keep working with it, if not then keep trying things out till you find what makes you happy!

If a person is working on something they hate it'll show through in the results, it'll be sloppier and rougher, almost like the person went "Oh **** it! That's good enough!". They don't care and as such don't reach the full potential.

Liking one artistic style more than another is all personal preference, I love your current style and would likely hate it if you went into a manga/anime like look. Which makes me the polar opposite of the commenter.

Do what you enjoy and the audience that can appreciate it will follow.

Wow! Cashoo your work is incredible!

I also have to say - everyone - your character designs are amazing...I love the variety...everyone is so creative!

Beyond thinking that your current stuff is great, I think that even if it's a departure from your older styles, it's always worth it to expand and try new things. Perhaps some of the things you learn through your current works will be carried over the next time you want to do a more manga style work. Learning to become proficient in a variety of styles can't ever be a bad thing.

Your style has constantly improved I can see it in your gallery, Trust yourself cashoo, you know what you want to do with your art and you only get 1 life. if you think the new stuff is an improvement and more in the direction you want to go, then keep progressing, Ive changed my style/methods heaps of times you gotta do what feels right. dont let other people effect your aspiration's. you are probably the greatest young talent Ive seen on DA, pleasing other people is good but never let it be at expense of yourself

I dunno what that other person is smoking, but I think your work is amazing. It's so full of life and humor and movement and just 'fun-ness,' it's like each one is about to jump off the page. I think that's an incredible and rare quality--it reminds me of the work of one of my favorite artists, Wendy Pini. Her stuff just looks like it's living and moving on the page. I think you have that same sort of ability.

Hope you get to feeling better about it all soon.

Ahh the left-handed compliment.
It has all the subtlety of a gut punch but comes wrapped in an "almost" nice comment... been there.
Stuff like this can happen when you open your art up for the world to see and it can really throw you
for a loop sometimes especially if it's said by someone you know i.e. family, friends, a long time fan
who follows your work, someone who's opinion you trust etc. etc.

Having been an artist for many years I can relate, I even walked away from art altogether for many years when things got to be too much.
I only started drawing again in recent months because my niece asked me (the way only a child can lol) to draw her portrait and now seeing
all the CoH art here and on DA has got me... curious again (though now I feel like I'm way behind and everyone has gone digital while I still
use traditional mediums).

Anywho... having been down that path a few times, let me offer a bit of perspective. Art is very subjective, some people will like where you're
going and some wont, some want you to experiment and grow, some want you to never change away from what they are used to getting
from you... some are just jealous. Sometimes you do it for the fans and sometimes it's just for you, the trick is to find a balance. Everyone is
different and you will never be able to please everybody... nor should you ever try to.
Also, something to bear in mind, you don't lose the ability to draw manga just because you try a different style ya know? You've created
something and even if you put it down and walk away for a while it will still be there when/if you choose to come back to it. You might
have to dust it off (*practice*) a bit to bring back the shine but it's not going anywhere and hey in the long run fans will come and fans
will go, you are the one constant that remains so I say go for it. You clearly have a degree of talent, and it looks like your new style
is picking up bunches of new fans already... myself included.

Don't worry, you will never become a worse artist just because you tried something new!
Now quit playing the game all day and get back to teh artz! **/e cracks whip**

P.S. If that person's opinion (and that's all it really is) is still bothering you though I'd say you should really take Ghost's advice and ask
them what they meant by it. Could be they intended something different and it just came out that way.
Get clarity first before you let it have any impact on you.

Christopher

Wendy Pini is AWESOME!

Elfquest was the first graphic novel I ever read way back when... I still have one of the original 5 sets. W.a.R.P. Graphics ftw!

Mate, I wouldn't worry about that person's comments. Believe me, there are a LOT of people lurking about DA who wouldn't know good art if it bit them on the posterior.

I for one think your stuff is fantastic. Sterling work!

Well I'll offer up one of my old/new characters, if your don't mind... Ah good ol' Jin Yae... how many times have I remade this character in how many games? I've lost count..

Link to referance photos here: http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...erancecard.jpg

Best I can do since I can't seem to take screenshots in char select or costume creator. Though I will note that the batty wing pattern should actually resemble spider webs.. but its close enough to pass for them anyways. Aaaand... to give you more than few fun photos to go on.. I'll pass along my notes for you to get an idea about what she's like.

Basic History:

Quote:
Jin was pulled to this world during one of Portal Corps 'accidents.' Although considered a necromancer by our standards, in Drow Society she is, and prefers to be called, a Shadow Priestess.

Due to the hostlie relations between her people, and the humans on her world, she immedatly assumed she was in danger and was being attacked when she noticed the large number of oddly dressed, but still clearly human, onlookers surrounding her, and quickly worked to dispose of them. Unfortunantly, the fighting with the heroes that soon showed up during her slaughter of the scientists destroyed the portal that brought her here and left her stranded.

Since she was too dangerous to be left roaming about, and no one was sure how to reason with her for the time being, they detained her in the Zig. While there, she quickly learned english, while also hearing the whispers and tales of Arachnos, an organization almost mirroring her own society.

When Arachnos busted her out of her confinement, she then decided to work along with this strange alien parallel and bide her time and resources to eventually further her own ends.

NOTE: Her current outfit is not her original, it was something she acquired later on to replace the damaged robe.
Personality:
Quote:
Jin is adaptive and calculating, never letting setbacks hold her back for long and always looking for ways to push situations to her favor. That said, she has become enthralled with various forms of entertainment on this world and has started to enjoy life here. In fact, one may not even notice how calculating she is, considering how lively and warm she can can be most of the time... though this attitude in itself might be a ploy of hers to manipulate how others perceive her.

Part of her adaptive attitude has led her keep in mind her own limits and realize that even she must take a break now and again, usually making her end up in the strange place known as Pocket D.

However, the main change in her recent attitude, aside for the quickly rising tolerance of humans, is that she no longer wishes to go back to her world.. and seems to be planning to find a way to bring more of her kind here.. under her rule of course.
Pose wise, Its totally up to the artist how you want to depict her.. though generally I think the best would be her in the act of either summoning some magical entity or just striking some sultry pose... Lloth knows what goes on in her head...

Like I said.. if you want to draw her in a pose its totally up to you... I'm not very good at describing what I see in my head anyways..

Wow, wow and wow some more.
the lines, the anatomy, the balance... superb!
the quality of the centre piece could easily star on a mainstream cover!
The surrounding blurrier boundry fits in so very well, they complete the piece without distracting from the centre and the details AS WEL AS create a level of mystery to the piece... like she's stepping out from shadows, or out of a magical conduit.

*looks left and right shiftily, then FREAKS OUT DUE TO THE AWESOMENESS*

I'll be honest and say that Vahzy freak me out and I'm not a fan of them.
Looking at your W.I.P., I look over it to see points to praise or point out things to improve. I'm drawing a complete blank on this piece. The anatomy is so odd that I feel I can't really comment on it, other than the doc himself. His arms are reaching back a bit far, but then, I think that of the ingame version as well, so well done there!
Normally, I'd say that I look forward to seeing how you clean it up and such, and technique wise I am, but subject wise I don't
So there you go, an other example of "you can't please everyone every time, nor should you try"
