First character. Need advice!

Hey! I'm still trying to get into the game for the first time and I'm wondering about a few things.

Right now I'm torn between several power sets. I can't choose between Claws and Dark Melee for my primary and I can't choose between Willpower and Super Reflexes for my secondary.

It seems like the general public opinion is that Willpower might be equal to Super Reflexes but it takes a lot more influence to get there. What are the ups and downs to both power sets keeping in mind that I want to be useful in groups as well as being able to solo.

And then for the primary power pools...I'm just not sure. Dark Melee has a heal and it debuffs accuracy on almost every attack while Claws has a really cool knock back and seems to do more damage?

I'm not looking for anyone to make the decision for me really. I just don't have enough experience with the game to decide which would be best suited for what I want to do. Any information is helpful!

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well for someone that is new I would say go with Claws/Willpower. Willpower is a great set for someone that is just starting the game. It is a toggle up and go set and is really good with just Single-Origin Enhancements. Super Reflexes is good to but it is a late bloomer, it will be around the lvl 30ish before you start to feel good. Now Dark melee will help with that with Siphon Life as it is a heal and that is what Super reflexes lacks.

Now I love Dark melee but it does lack AoE which are good to have on teams Claws is great for that and Claws has good ST damage too. Anyone you pick you can't go wrong with but I think for a new Scrapper Claws/Willpower would be the better thing to go with.

Sounds like you already got some good ideas on what you want. I'd pick whatever best fits your character concept.

Or you could go for 2 powersets that might work well together. Like a defensive powerset and combine it with something that has tohit debuffs.

Willpower is very strong if built right and I like claws animation more than dark melee. So really I'd go with what sounds more fun.

Dark/wp would be easy mode for a new player with the two ways to gain end and health.

Dark/sr is probably the most ideal pairing for /sr and it makes /sr's leveling issues a lot smoother. Dark's Siphon Life covers /sr lack of heal.

Claws/wp. Another straight forward set. /wp really only adds the ability to do endless attacking with Claws. Shockwave needs to be used thoughtfully, but that's it.

Claws/sr. Ideal pairing for Claws. Claws helps /sr out since Claws is more end friendly. Claws is already fast, and /sr has Quickness.

Claws and Dark can both be defensive. You'll bring much more AoE damage with Claws, but Dark can make it a smoother ride. For teams, Claws help kills things faster. Dark will make it easier for your support teammates to not have to worry as much about you.

I can't tell you what you should pick because I don't know what your playstyle is. I can only tell you what I would play based on what I like.

My vote is for Claws/Willpower. Claws will make your life pre-20 (where you really should be picking up Quick Recovery from Willpower) much easier. It will also allow you to delay the always needed Stamina from the Fitness Power Pool. Claws also have great single target damage and some decent AoE, plus they're quick and have some cool weapon options. Willpower is very straightforward, but you will NEED the first seven powers (the last two are nice, but not necessary), so you're build will be fairly tight. But you can delay Stamina, which will free up some power choices. This is great for a new player, so you can really mess around with the set and see what you really want. Super Reflexes will require eight of the nine powers, with the last one being STRONGLY recommended (Elude), plus you need to take Stamina. To get to Stamina, you'll need to take two prerequisites from the Fitness pool (Hurdle or Swift and then Health, most likely). This will put a lot of stress on your build early on. And if you skip Stamina at 20 or 22, you'll find your endurance will almost always be empty. Finally, Super Reflexes kind of sucks until around level 30. Willpower is decent right away and gets good at 20, then great at 28 (Quick Recovery and Heightened Senses respectively).

All of that ranting aside, take the powers that fit your character's concept. I personally never design a character around powers, I choose the powers based on the character... but you may or may not be different. Anyway, have fun. Scrappers are a great way to start off (and we have the BEST forum!) =D

Not really. Here's a build 1-22 that takes Stamina. I'm hard pressed to think what I'm missing out on that I would be taking anyway. I could take one of the passives vs. CJ, but that's about it. Taking Spin that early means slots are sparse, but I could easily sub something else in so slots are more even and just take Spin later. I didn't feel like my Dark/sr really had an end crunch early on either. Really, the number one issue for /sr is the sheer gambler nature of defense at that low of a level. Also note Dark gets Dark Consumption before Stamina as well.

out of the options you list ... for a first time, you'd have the easiest time with DM/WP, ... DM provides the tools for most anything you'd need, and combined with WP's toggle-up and go and its smooth learning curve, you'll feel pretty powerful the whole way through,... there's really no bad power set combo's amongst scrappers ... so you can't really go wrong with any choice ...
