within the fire aura primary, there is no defense. none, zero.
to build def on fire tanks, you need to start with cj, weave, then plan to spend a bunch on IOs
Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.
With mine, I went for about 22-23% defense to Melee, AOE, Ranged, and Psychic, to cover all my bases. It works pretty well. Defense debuffs erase that quickly, of course, but it does help... anything reducing the amount of damage and debuffs hitting you is a win.
I know some others focus on getting their Melee or Smashing and Lethal defense as high as possible. I'd have to fiddle with Mid's a bit, but my guess is that getting in the 30% range to those wouldn't be THAT hard (it'd cost a fair amount in IOs, but might not break the bank), but would be tougher the higher you went.
I prefer my approach, of course, so I have pretty much the same defense no matter what I'm facing, and I can count on that whether it's Carnies, crazy creatures in FBZ, or Cimerorans. Recharge is the other nice thing to have, for Healing Flames. It does well for me, but nothing wrong with trying for a bunch of Smashing/Lethal, as that's so common.

One of the IOs you'll want to look for is Steadfast Protection: Resistance/Defense. It adds a global +3% Defense to everything (all positions, all types). It's generally fairly inexpensive, compared to some of the IO stuff out there (by which I mean, it's probably only a million or so Inf).
If you build for melee defence, you can do something stupid like this, runs at 44% melee defence and could be capped in several ways, the PvP IO being the only one that wouldn't require undue sacrifices other than a lot of cash.

I'm building my fire tank for +def. Just a question out there for all you fire tankers out there. What are your Def numbers???

Having built for both typed and positional, a smarter way to go on a Fire Tanker would be to pony up the bucks for Kinetic Combats and soft cap S/L defense instead. That will cover all positions for 90%+ of the content in the game ... but it's a lot more expensive and you'll lose a ton of recharge.

Now that I looked at my actual build, my Ranged is actually 22.8%, so not quite "just under 25%".

I have an offensive alternative build that isn't grabbing the Fighting Pool. Just slotted with common IOs at the moment, but the goal there is +damage and +recharge. Not sure I'd want to main tank with it on the new TFs, but it'd be fine against most content.

I know a lot of us have touched upon this in other various threads, but you're really not giving up *that* much offense on these def-capped builds. The only thing I'm *really* missing on my S/L capped build is Hasten, which is big considering Fire's reliance on HF, but w/a high def, you usually don't need it so much either. All the big attacks are there, capped for ED and recharging a bit slower than w/Hasten, but not a ton. Personally, I'm much, much happier w/my Fire tank at cap than before when he was more of a scranker.

Is that 46% after the def from Stealth suppresses? I can't remember what the pool power suppresses to, but I know SI from Illusion suppresses to half (others like Steamy Mist don't suppress at all, which is great for my Stormies and Colds ).

so if I took Blazing Aura and slotted it with mulitistrike I could get to 45% but I don't notice the difference

What I'm doing on my fire/ tank is CJ, Hover, and Weave with the +defense Steadfast global in temp protection. It works rather nicely, I have 13% just from those alone unslotted, approaching 20% slotted. With sets, I'll be capping ranged defense (blastank concept, don't question the concept, just replace ranged with melee and you're gold.)
