But there's no way to do so automatically? Specifically, when I use the quote or multiquote buttons, the post appears without the quoted bits.
For example, when quoted, your post looks like {with brackets changed, ofcourse}:

New forum question - how do I quote a message which itself contains quotes? Specific example, if I wanted to reply to this post, addressing point-by-point, how would I also retain the bits that he himself quoted, so as not to lose the context? Neither quote nor multi-quote seem to do that.

red when enabled.

When you are done choosing the quotes and the order, then click the "Quote" button on the last post you want quote (it doesn't matter if the Multi-quote button on that last one is red or not).

Unfortunately, there's no way to do nested quotes automatically. The best you can do is quote both posts, and edit them so they're nested.
Hmm. I don't think that the boards can't do nested quotes; rather, that it won't. I recall the moderators frowned on hueg quote pyramids on the old boards. Perhaps this is a heavy handed way of nipping that in the bud.

Oh, well, that's easy to solve... now where are the board servers again?
