Inquiring Tank info
SS/Inv is the classic tank, all around great. I started two invul tanks and i'm liking them so far, they are still little. Mace/WP, well ppl say WP is really good, but its not a great tank, it's aggro holding powers aren't as strong as the rest, likely the lowest of all tanks(it's aggro aura isn't good for holding guys to you)
Both can be fun, i'd say stick to the SS/Invul and see where that leads you.
If you want a less smashy and i think more fun Tank, try A DM/Shield. A solid set and good powers. Shield charge never gets old and is up enough for solid damage and not up too much that you get tired of seeing whole spawns get smashed with it. It's a good set good def and ok resists. I really like Shield, got a few tankers and scrappers with it.
Otherwise you can go with Stone maybe Fire Melee. Stone is an ok set that becomes awesome at lvl 33, once you get some slots into Granite. It's a rather night and day difference . Fire is not smashy but is flashy. Fire gets great damage and isn't as resisted as the rest.
I'd say stick with the SS/Invul or perhaps roll a DM/Shield for less smash and more utility powers. Both are great.
I see tankers as doing more than just smashing things, they are there to dictate the battle field. They can best redirect all the enemies damage and debuffs, crunch the numbers of enemies in for the teams debuffs and damage, all to raise the teams efficiency and go as far as telling AVs what attacks they can and can not use. Some tanks I have known, didn't enjoy tanking and sucked at it till 40+, then they found out how much of a benefit to a team they can be and loved it.

He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
As power proliferation continues, it becomes more important than ever to be clear about what's a primary and what's a secondary. Your tanks must be Inv/SS and WP/Mace, not Mace/WP or SS/Inv.
Some people find WP to be trickier to use to tank for teams, due to its weaker taunt aura. Otherwise it's a great set.
Shannon has a point -- tanking for a team is about setting up the battle and positioning the enemies as much as it is about negating the powerful enemy alpha strike and holding aggro. Tankers don't have to lead the team, but they should lead off into combat. Teams often, dare I say, usually, want the Tanker to take the lead role in who you fight, how many, when, and where.

I am a mature and experienced player. I have tried SS/Inv and Mace/WP and thought so-so on both. Neither tanker I created did not get past 20 b/c I got, honestly to say a bit tired of just smashing things but that's what a Tanker does. But that does not scare me away from this class. I always see teams looking for tanks and that keeps me motivated to keep in mind they are fun and usefull.
I am always wanting to be on teams, not much of a soloer, but anyone got any recomendations for a good team playing tank? Should I stick with my toonss that I have allready? I am more than willing to re-roll a new toon. Plant Priestess She-Fire Duke of Dudes Ho Lee Cow - all on Freedom server |
Get past 20 ... Tankers are horrid to play until after Stamina.
Depends on what style you like.
SD/Fire is nice if you wanna do good damage.
My fave is Stone. Yes, GA makes you darn near unstoppable. That's what i like about it. Besides the -dam in GA, but hey, that's what scrappers and blasters are for. lol.
I went Stone/Ice/Earth. It's a great team combo. Ice isn't strong, but with Ice Patch and GA and Leaders Pools, it's a great "team tank". Earth has Salt Crystal and Stalagmites and Quicksand. All which has a -def.
Like i said, it depends on what you like. I like being a meat shield when i'm on a tank. lol.
Inv/SS is a classical combination. (Inv/DM is good too, and has the potential to be even tougher; it did not exist until Dark Melee was ported to Tankers in i12 IIRC.)
You will want Stamina as soon as possible, and even then it will not be enough. Plan on getting at least two of the three (Miracle, Numina, Performance Shifter) +recovery buttons, and look for recovery bonuses from the attack, defensive, and resistance sets also. Getting to Stamina can be tricky, because you definitely want Invincibility at level 18 also. Call Me Awesome has written an excellent guide to let you know how to proceed. If your current build strays far from that, you may want to eat a veteran respec or reroll.
Super Strength is a fairly forgiving set with a number of skippable powers (Punch, Hand Clap, Hurl); you can make a quite adequate attack chain without 'em.

Try SD/FM/Pyre, the epic will give you some ranged blaster type attacks, and fire plays more like a squishy damage AT secondary.
