Make a new shortcut to:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh
That will allow you to skip the updater/verifying and go straight to the login screen.
(Change the path as needed for your own installation directory)
Run the normal shortcut and let it verify during a food break, or even wait for the next time there is an update.

On a side note, has the crashing started recently, does it take you back to desktop with Cryptic feedback window?
Just out of curiosity since this has been happening on my mates recently (all of them sporting Nvidia) and on me aswell, but I managed to just sort it out by deleting Nvidia drivers entirely and downloading again, just have to get the right version.

6 times I crashed on Freedom, each time requiring a 45 min verify image check.... like is going on right now... !
I tried other servers and they are ghost towns on double XP....
How many crashes did you have ?
