Hey TH,
1) That all depends. The biggest SG that i'm close to the 'The Evil Echelon', but 'MURDERERS UNLIMITED' has a pretty firm grip on things. Remnants of a pretty respectable PvP/Farming Corp. Some great guys in that too.
2) Depends on which circle you're from. I'm a member of the 'Harlequins' channel, so for me, it's them.
3) Depends again, on what you mean by politics. Defiant's a little quiet for anything large scale, and i14 has things up in the air in terms of farming and what people think about it. Perhaps wait until the dust settles 
4) Cap au Diable, North. It has a Black Market (player to player 'loot' sales) and a University (For crafting), with a Base Portal (For SG bases) within a stones throw of each other. Some of the AE buildings are becoming decent hangous too.

Just a heads up TH, When you come from playing mxo to this theres a big change. For one the community is alot larger. Most coalitions can outnumber the amount of public people that mxo held. Therefore its hard to define things like big players. Thats not to say you'll get names and faces that are quite vocal like you get anywhere. But generally there in large numbers and not one or the other is anymore important. The same can be said for SG's there are large ones there's small ones but its hard to say which ones are "major powers"(although its a little easier to distinguish) . That said there is a VG/SG table that counts prestige (money for your SG) and ranks them according to that.
Anyway i'll be glad to join you on defiant as none of my Characters there have SG/VG's (:

I have been playing MMOs for years, my last being Age Of Conan, so I am used to communities of a larger size.

I'm surprised that people know what MxO is :P
I have spoken to several players on ventrilo, and so far, I have yet to have one hate tell, which I think is a record. Community wise, everyone seems focused on their own thing (which I was told about), and tend to help each other, and most people's goals are similar.

My guild has decided to sub to City of Villains for the near future, and so far the game seems impressive. I was wondering if someone could be so kind if they could answer some questions based on this server:-
1) Who are the major powers on this server (Guilds), and what is a good guild normally able to accomplish (that makes them stand out)?
2) Who are the key playa's out there?
3) Does this server contain many politics in this game, and who concerns themselves with it?
4) Lastly, what are the hang out places of most of the players in this game?
