i created a toon named " Jaukman ", and they banned my name beacause they say that he break a rule, let me see you that this name is not trademarked, if u start to delete names beacuse they are similar u must delete more than half of all accounts in game

Did they say it was for being a trademarked/copyrighted name? Does the word have a meaning in any other languages? (ie possibly an offensive meaning?)

The one other thing to remember, is that it could have been doen via a petition from another player and not just the GM randomly choosing who/what to rename

I'm guessing this thread will get pulled because questioning Moderator decisions is expressly against the rules - and certainly if you want to know the answer you should be discussing with the GMs concerned.

Could also be because it was a claws/regen scrapper that looked like a character played by someone called Jackman in a couple of movies.

I really should do something about this signature.

Could be - the OP did say "...if u start to delete names beacuse they are similar...".

They'll be banning Supermann and Spidorman next.

So did the costume resemble any popular comicbook hero?

In any event, asking people here won't get you very far - we don't know much about the story, and don't have the power to do anything anyway.

The GM that did the renaming will have sent you an email, which may give reasons. If you want to contest the rename, reply, stating your case, and see where that gets you.

Ok, lets sort some things out. Firstly, it's not much to do with characters being "trademarked". Very few names are actually trademarks. The law in question is copywrite and that inculdes things like appearence, powers and names that in some way resemble the name of an existing character.

Yes, you are quite correct, if applied strictly than an awful lot of characters would be genericed. That is why the GMs operate a sliding scale. They look at similarity of name, costume and powers taken together. They also look at how well known the character is. The more well known the character is, the more likely it is that you will be asked to change some aspect. There is also the Marvel factor. Because of the Marvel lawsuit a few years ago GMs tend to be much stricter where the resembelence is to one of thier characters (with VVolverine probably number one on the list).

Character's getting their names changed is something that happens quite a lot in this game. It's probably happened to many of the verterans here. The thing is not to take it as a personal attack, just choose a new name and carry on playing.

I was quite shocked to find out that the 'New Guardians' were actually a DC super group (but not a very big / good one). It's only the name we share (and also, my original SG was titled "The Guardians", but it disbanded, so following Marvel's theme of 'new', we became the 'New Guardians') and there is nothing in common with the DC team.

The 'Liberty Legion' is a Marvel Super-team, and they exist on Defiant, too. I'm sure 'Freedom Force' is taken, as well.

So yeah - it's about similarities in many areas, not just one (i.e. SG name)

Of course - I'm sure if 'The Avengers' or 'The Fantastic Four' were created as SG's, they would be generiscised.

And remember, heroes change their names a lot.

Ms.Marvel > Binary > Warbird
Captain Marvel > Photon > Pulsar
Captain America > 'The Captain'
Marvel Boy > Justice
Ant-Man > Giant-Man > Goliath > Yellow Jacket > The Wasp

So changing a hero's name isn't that much of an 'out of genre' thing. Remember, Monica (Captain Marvel) became Photon because Captain Marvel (Genis-Vell) wanted his father's title back.
