A strange idea too complex to explain on subject..
I think that, if they were actually going to implement the code needed to pull this off, then many people would be happy, and many would be unhappy.
1. I think we would lose the ability to shoot around corners (but so would the mobs).
2. I think what would actually happen is that you would hit the first thing the 'bolt' comes across instead of your actual target.
There are already powers, melee mostly, which act the way you are suggesting. The one I'm familiar with is Golden Dragonfly, which has an attack pattern which is a 10 foot long, very thin cone. Since there are already attacks like that, and it's a special feature of them, I don't think they would go with turning all ranged attacks into 80 foot melee cones.
Also, the current engine isn't up to this kind of tracking. If they were going to go to the trouble of upgrading it to allow it, they might as well do it properly and hit the first thing the attack cmes across.

If you where looking for a realistic representation then the attack would hit the first target and stop or partially deflect only rarely or in 'overpowered' situations would it continue through unabatted to the next target.
And as NC seem to like to downplay the violence aspect of the game (We arrest bad guys not kill them) I don't really think the concept of us punching holes straight through our targets though 'possible' isn't really going to appeal to them IMO
So while a nice idea sorry /unsigned

i'd like to be able to arrest baddies, or at least leave them hanging up on a lamppost in cuffs.
oh, and I like this idea a little, but agree that it would probably be the first enemy hit who took most of the damage, making it less desirable than the current way it works.

ok.. one of the things making combat more special and in need of higher intelligence in Age of Conan is this feature.
This would allow the tanker to jump in the line of sight and take the blast. This would stop the once-targetted-it-never-misses effect we have now which is often killibg the super speeders while they are far away already.
So what if you hit the one in front... this would then also work the other way around. It forces us to think as a real team again instead of almost blindly fire at will.
It gets my vote...

Liz, the problem is ot whether we think it's a good idea, because even I think it would be kind of cool (even though I generally think AoC sucks).
The problem is that it would require a total re-engineering of the game engine to make it work, so let's face facts, this isn't happening any time soon. CO seems to have this kind of mechanism, however, and CoH may get updated to that engine (maybe, possibly, sometime, hedge, hedge, imply uncertainty...), perhaps as part of some paid for expansion, maybe.

I'd agree with Liz and Raven there, yes it would be a more realistic simulation alloing for more interesting use of tactics, but then so would friendly fire for AoE but I doubt they will implement that any time soon either because of the major rewritting of the engine invovled.
oh yes that AoE comment was kinda frivolous and probably will never be implemented as it would change the whole dynamic/balance of the game. So don't take it too seriously please.
Of course this would need to allow for hitting innocent civilians or team members as well
Mind of Gaia lvl 50 Defiant's first Mind/Storm 'troller.
Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant
i don't want to hit teammates, but the option of possibly accidentally on purpose hitting civilians? nice.

It's a nice though, but in addition to fundamentally changing gameplay I think you would open an unbelievably large can of do not want. Precision blasters would suffer, for instance.
rant:
how could you propose this travesty of gaming! really, think of the damage youd do to:
sniping would require good positioning, timing and a knowledge of how a sniping attack should actually work.
scrappers would have to get out of each others way
You would be able to actually hide behind the (super) human shields called tanks
medics.. i mean defenders , ahem, couldnt just spam healing into a fight which would resul tin havign to pull back to get healed and not just fight away blithely and assume that you will be healed because the defender (or whoever) is concentrating on you and not having troubles of their own.
I cant see trollers being too affected except for kinetics
Teams would have to act like... teams with timing and stuff.
so, ehhh, yeah. hope that told you. hope you're ashamed and apologetic and things now.... emmmm /rant?
/signed. dont want to damage teammates but I think this idea would change combat dynamics by a small amount which would only make things more interesting. oh, and for the record, I play a precision blaster as my main.
Of course, it also takes a lot of the casual fun out of it; I'm a little old for twitch gaming, and kind of like that this game doesn't demand that I line up a headshot perfectly every time. The combat dynamics of the game as it stands leaves me able to concentrate on more strategic points; positioning, endurance usage, helping out teammates, and so forth.
The mere facts that the game engine would need to be reprogrammed and that all the AT's, powersets, powers, temp powers, enemies and probably some of the maps would need to be reworked to accommodate it barely deflect me from my conclusion that this would be rubbish for a large part of the playerbase and ludicrously time-intensive for the devs.

This idea would change combat dynamics hugely, particularly on maps where people are already struggling for space (looking at you, caves).
Most MM primaries would become useless without a major AI rewrite.
Before I start, this was just an idea I came up with, not sure myself if I'd even want it implimented in game.
Basically, it was an idea that when you use a ranged attack, each enemy the graphical effect hits takes dmg, perhaps slightly less than the actual target does. It's just been bugging me a bit lately that despite my Ice Bolt going graphically through 6 enemies, only 1 takes damage.
I can see how this would overpower, as it's essentially making all single target powers a very narrow cone, but like I said firstly, it's just an idea I'm not sure myself would even want implimented.
Thoughts?
