COH and Laptops
It'll run, but don't expect awesome frame rates from it. Laptops aren't generally suitable as gaming platforms.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
...unless it costs the earth, such as an Alienware, as it'll contain smaller versions of a powerful desktop PC.
Those HP specs on graphics...
Display resolution - 1280 x 800
Video adapter - NVIDIA® GeForce 8400M GS
Video RAM - Up to 1023 MB Total Available Graphics Memory with 256 MB dedicated
I believe 1280 x 800 is an ok res, but it isn't the 'norm' - 1440 x 900 is the normal resolution for a widescreen laptop, so you may find whilst windows will display it correctly, games may not.
Where it says 'up to 1023' video graphics memory - I believe it means 'takes it from standard memory if required. So dedicated 256 is ok - but I'm sure anything else over that and you'll notice a distinct issue with your normal memory going down as the graphics driver will use it - moreso with vista, supposedly as Vista seems to use more memory to run (allegedly)
I could be wrong on that, but I'm sure that's how I remember it. (I'm sure someone like FFM will let me know it's that's right or wrong).

Depends on screen size. Both of my laptops have been 1280*800 native (15.4" screen) ... I believe the 1440*900 kicks is far more common for the 17" screens.
Never had any issues with games not liking 1280*800 (including CoH).
I mainly play on a desktop but I have a Dell laptop with a 1920x1200 screen (and a nVidia 7900GS). With depth of field and bloom off I play at native resolution at 30-55 fps (which is fine).

I was planning on getting a Laptop for my birthday, and I was wondering whether the one I've found would play City of X.
Can anybody help with advice or suggestions?

I have a Hp Pavillion DV9000.. Dual core, geForce 8600GS, 2 Gb ram.. all other features are roughly the same (as they come standard on the dv pavillion range).
It's not the best gaming platform. Really.
As mentioned, a little loss of frame rate, can't push the graphics at full and as soon as you play (any game - Coh, WoW, NFSU-) the laptop reaches some alarming temperatures.
Don't get me wrong, you can play COH but don't push the laptop in making full use of its abilities.

^ indeed this.
Personally, this laptop is great as a Multimedia and entertainment centre but not so much for AAA title games.
Oh and the max desktop res is 1440x900.
i always want a labtop to have a normal resolution, like 1650x1080 or 1280x1024.
i think that, if you want a good labtop for a reasonable price, look around here:
