Returned to game...

... after a long time off (over a year). Just got a couple of questions...

I've noticed many improvements in the game since I last played, but the biggest difference that I can see is the Invention system. Now, I've got a couple of 50s, who have no salvage other than base, really. I know one has 30,000,000 inf and am not really sure how much the other has, though it's not likely to be a lot because I gave a lot away. Anyway, what I'm asking, how much of a disadvantage are those characters going to be to their respective counterparts? Is it worth me trying to kit them out? Or should I just use the inf on newer characters who will have a chance to collect more salvage on their journey to 50?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Welcome back

Using Invention Enhancements is pretty much optional - if you're a hardcore PvPer, then they might be vital, but if you do the normal missions, you won't find them any harder than before - the difficulty of the mobs is stil the same, so you can take them on without the new enhancements, just like you did before - but the new enhancements does make it a little easier
You'll still get lots of salvage and inf at level 50, so you can keep on with your 50s if you like - a lot of the ultra-rare purple recipes sell for more than 40 million, sop you only need to find a few to fund buying the less rare types.

The Invention system posesses Invention Enhancements (IOs) which are really needed for builds. I would recommended to stay sharp with the tutorial in the Universities in either Steel Canyon or Cap Au Diable.

(sorry if I'm misunderstanding your question) You're going to need all round inf on all of your toons if you want a decent build. Like others, I don't bother crafting IOs, I buy them from Wentworths/Blackmarket (explained in Tutorial). IOs can be xx mil expensive, but I say start small and buy some of the basic ones before you go into the rare ones which cost lots of inf.

Hope that cleared things off.

Don't do this. You don't need an insane amount of Inf to get a respectable build, especially for PvE and you can gather a lot of the needed salvage and drop from playing at 50 yourself. I think I managed to do my Sonic/Fire/Fire Blaster (going for +recovery bonus') for about 20 million or so, give or take a few. You shouldn't try and get everything at once from the Consignment House. Put some bids in at about the average price in the history and wait, it'll go through eventually. This is the easiest way to save a bit of money.

Also a lot of the time purchasing the recipe and crafting Uncommon or Rare Recipes can work out cheaper than just buying the pre-crafted enhancement, you should always check to see what the total cost of recipe/salvage/crafting is.

Right okay, thanks for your responses. I think I'm going to concentrate on new characters, levelling those will mean I'll get a lot of inf and salvage and will be learning as I go in that respect, so I don't need to kit out older characters with IOs which I know little to nothing about.

Also, VEATs... yay or nay?

Massive yay.

Excellent... Just need to get a villain to 50. Ha! I've played since launch and was even part of that 2 day head-start on launch and still, my highest level villain is 33... I just need a levelling guild to sort me out, as that'll spur me on!

Welcome back.

The VEATs I have teamed with seem brilliant and I will be making a Crab Spider when I finish all my current projects, or if I finish them I should say.

"Well, they found my diary today.
They were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims
They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk
with one leg missing
Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"

I quit in I8, came back in I11, and was in the same position as you - not sure whether/how to re-slot my old pre-I9 L50s with IOs. I played new characters for the first month to learn the basics of inventions and see how they had changed the game (a lot), but in the end I learnt more about set bonuses from the forum and especially from playing around with Mids Hero Designer.

Muck around making IO’d up builds for your L50s in Mids and you’ll learn all about sets and their bonuses and find what’s best for you - focus on one theme per character, whether its fixing end issues or low accuracy or gaps in attack chains, or getting capped defences, or lots of global recharge, or whatever, and work towards that - see what’s possible and it will help you decide if your L50s are worth re-slotting.

Most of all learn how to use the auction house. Making enhancements yourself is usually cheaper, but not always - check the historic prices for pre-made as well as recipe+salvage cost, and for a couple of levels either side of what you want, and see which is cheapest - there are bargains to be had. Don’t be in a rush to pay the prices you see - prices fluctuate a lot, weekly and even daily - impatient/lazy players with more inf than sense will pay high prices to get something NOW which will trend prices upwards for a while, but if you bid lower and wait a week or two you can get better deals.

Just take your time, there’s no rush, and it’s easy to waste inf and make mistakes if you don’t understand what you’re doing. Don’t spend more than you’re willing to, but be aware that inf is much easier to make now than it was pre-I9 - most of my new L50s have made well over 100mill inf just levelling normally 1-50. Though if you need inf quickly just play your existing L50s for a while - the right purple recipe drop can get you 50+mill inf in one shot.

Personally I spent 3 months buying IOs for and re-slotting my pre-I9 L50s one at a time - and also making the inf to pay for their builds. Mine were approx 125mill inf each (my mastermind cost less because debuff/control/pet sets are so cheap compared to attack/armour sets), but I did set a personal limit of not paying more than 10mill for any single IO. Those L50s are all noticeably more fun/powerful now than they were with SOs and I’m glad I IO’d them up, but I only use them occasionally for TFs/GMs/raids so it’s arguable if they were worth re-slotting - consider if you’ll actually play your L50s enough to justify the expense/hassle of re-slotting them.

Very much yay for Crab Spiders and I'm looking forward to playing the other 3 VEATs too.

Thanks for your detailed response!

You raise a real great point there, I don't really any of my 50s, other than my Ice/Rad Controller, and even, that's just a bit of world PvP, so I may eventually kit her out.

ATM, I think I'm going to drag my Nin/Nin stalker (I know... it was so nearly Energy, but I thought I'd go for a concept char... *sigh*), so hopefully I'll be able to get some salvage along the way, without starting completely from scratch. It also means that I'll be on my way to my Widow VEAT!

Instead of clogging the the forums with my mindless question threads, I'll throw another out there. Can anyone recommend any levelling SGs on Defiant? All I really want is one which is active to so I can grab a team when I'm on (pretty much all the time :P)

I dunno about Defiant but i can definitely recommend you on union EVIL as the most active villains SG around all servers and Dirty handprints if you bother to transfer.Good chaps and awsome fun.

Plus if you are into world pvp Union is ----> that way no matter what golden troll claims

I'm not against a move it's just that ALL my characters are on Defiant... and I bet all the RP'rs have got all the good names on Union! :P

That being said, I might try and make a character now I guess, can't really find any teams for my stalker!

Defiant isn't quite dead yet, but getting a team can be a bit hit and miss.

No probs.

Tbh I kit out my L50 characters with decent IOs more on the offchance I may want to use them, than because I'll be playing them often - I mainly PvE and you can never predict what teams will need on a TF (though 99% of the time it's my Blaster or Corrupter, and tbh I enjoy them on TFs the most anyway). I do tend to wheel all of my 50s out for new content though.

Mainly though I just like being able to achieve my target build so I can mentally file away that L50 as "done" and move on to my next levelling project

Yes - when you get a team you miss not getting one.

Indeed, Defiant seems noticeably quieter these days, in fact, a few of my friends have moved to Union, some I'm considering splitting time between the two.

I mean, my level 45 scrapper couldn't get a team this morning, last night, and yesterday day time. It was quite strange.

Is there any reason for the shift toward Union? Before it was pretty even, if not Defiant slightly more busy?

Originally saying Defiant was dead was somewhat false, and it still is, however a lot of people took it as gospel truth and jumped ship for easy mode team finding rather than actually make their own teams.

Or, like me, they've just filled there slots up on Defiant.

I've got to say that until recently, my "looking for a team" would entail me sticking my flag up and me chatting in Icon or something, and just 'expect' to be invited to a team.

Since I returned and have been on Defiant, I've been sending out tells, even broadcast in PI - I know, not the most tasteful of methods, but it was at least all spelt correctly and sent out in a non-spam like manner and been completely unsuccessful. It's odd.
