At the moment you just can't trust the buff icons. Most icons appear, blink and disappear seemingly at random. Don't worry: Static Armor is still a toggle.

This is my first ela brute and I am wondering if I should go the Tough route or the Aid self route. Anybody have any suggestions.
Try one and see if it works. If not, respec into the other 
I prefer to focus on the SMASH! and not the ZOMG HEAL! aspect of playing a Brute, so I went the Tough route.

I think I will go the tough route as I tend to play in teams and they generally have a healer to help.
I never liked the idea of aid self myself.
Exactly. If you want to go solo PvP or never team at all Aid Self might be nice, but other than that it just uses a power pool and two power picks including slots that you will probably want to use for something else.
Tough on the other hand is a decent addition to your S/L resistances, so it is quite useful for any player.
With my elec brute I first went without both but respecced into Tough later and the increase in survivability is noticeable.

I see both tough and aid self on EM/ELAs who like to solo AVs. Thats generally seems done only to an extent with accolades and insps helping though.

The thing I had to really get my mind around was playing him more like a scrapper and less like a tanker.
When I used to tank, we were in I4 and my green bar would very rarely ever move.
Brutes certainly do not have that type of survivability but then again neither do inv tanks nowadays.
I read this was a toggle and in my power tray it appears to be one. Yet the powericon blinks and then dissappears after a minute. In the power tray however it looks like it is on. What is the story behind this. Is it a bug?
