Prologue: Romanov

Tuesday, April 22, Hatem Nasri’s Villa, three miles south of Liberty City, The Liberty Islands

The Liberty Islands afternoon sun cast golden beams across the wooden beams of the bedroom floor. The white linen of the bedclothes. The fine dusted perspiration of the two naked bodies; one with curved flesh like sun-warmed bronze the other hard and pale like sculpted marble.

The young woman gave a sigh, pleasure and exhaustion, as she rested her head on the man’s perfect chest.

“That was…breathtaking, Alex,” she said in the melodic accent of the Liberty Islands. “It is amazing even to me that I had waited so long. But there was my studies and helping my father’s cause and… never dreamt it would be so…so…”

She pushed her long, black hair back from her pretty face and made a moan of pleasurable excitement that expressed her feelings better than any word in the vocabulary of the six languages she spoke.

Romanov turned to admire the beautiful Indian woman. “My dear, Rashme, had you not waited for me, it would not have been. And do not think time given to your father’s cause a waste. Hatem Nasri is a great man and he will lead your country from these dark times.”

Rashme sighed, propping her self on one arm and resting the other across Romanov’s chest. “I know. And we are so grateful for your political advice, Alex. Without you we would not have got as far as we have. But I worry about him. At the last few rallies there has been trouble that almost became violence. I sometimes wonder where all this hostility is coming from.”

Romanov stroked her hair. “Some of the old adages are true, angel, and Buku has become corrupted by power. Many of the people are proud of their country, others are scared by Vanguard’s presence and the Rikti threat. They are looking for someone to lead them, and many think that Buku and force is the way. You and your father must show them there is another way.”

She smile. “You always no what to say, Alex. But what if something did happen to him? I…I am not ready to…”

Romanov pulled her to him and kissed her. “You are ready, Rashme. You are a remarkable young woman and I will always be here to guide you as long as you need it. But don‘t worry, nothing will happen to your father.” Following the truth with a lie.

She slid her leg across his body, placed her and on his shoulders and pushed herself up she was straddling him. “I sometimes wonder why you have helped us so much already, Mr Romanov.”

In a surge of movement he flipped her over, firm yet gentle. His arm gripped her strong thigh as it wrapped around him, her body shivering with expectation. “Believe me, Rashme, helping you is its own reward.”

Romanov, dressed in a pristine black suit, left Rashme asleep in the cooling evening breeze from the open window and walked down the stairs into the main room of the villa. It was a hive of activity as members of Hatem Nasri’s United Freedom Coalition worked hard on organising rallies, information gathering and general ideological discussion. All of the Islands’ ethnic groups were represented; Native Islanders, Africans, Indians and Europeans.

Some acknowledged the Nasri’s expert political advisor with a smile while others carried on with there work or conversations.

“Excuse me, Mr Romanov,”

Romanov looked at the slim, young black man in his late twenties who he has observed carried a torch for Rashme Nasri. “Yes, Simon, how can I help?”

Simon pulled the hem of his green t-shirt. “I don’t know how to say this, sir, I…I’ve did some research about you on the world wide web. There are some things that worried me…a little…I wonder if you would…”

Romanov patted him on the shoulder. “Don’t be so afraid, Simon. I know that you are only trying to protect Hatem and Rashme. We have that in common, do we not?”

“Yes. I…”

“I will be happy to answer any questions you have, Simon,” said Romanov as he guided him to the storage room. “But let’s do this in private. Although I have nothing to hide, a rumour once started can take on a life of its own.”

“Yes…of course.”

Romanov closed the storeroom door behind them and smiled.. “Now, Simon, what is it that’s troubling you?

“I don’t know how to say this.” Simon reached into one of the pockets of his cargo pants and pulled out some printed sheets. “You have been investigated by the FBI, Interpol, the CIA, Longbow…I know nothing has ever been proved but…as you say…I wish to look out for Rashme…and her father. And there were the charges of illegal weapons deals…”

Romanov nodded. “A businessman such as myself has to live with mistrust and unwanted attention such as this, Simon. I assure you that I have nothing to hide and wish no ill to the beautiful Rashme or her father. I am glad you came to me, it is good to know the UFC has at least one inquiring mind. I hope you remain as vigilant”

“Thank you , sir. I will.”

“I know. And that’s the problem right there.” Romanov’s arm sprang forward with the speed of a striking cobra. His hand gripped the lower half of Simon’s face, lifting him from the ground and pressing him against the wall. Smothering his nose and mouth he held him as he suffocated.

As he died, Romanov leaned close to Simon. “The old adages, my friend. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.”

A silent incantation. Romanov opened his mouth and a swirling red and black mist floated out and found a home inside Simon’s mouth an nostrils. Simon’s eyes opened wide.

“Destroy any evidence of your research on me. Then get back to work,” said Romanov.

Simon nodded. “Yes….Master.”

General Buku’s Mountainside Villa, The Liberty Islands

Elizabeth stepped out of the shower. She looked at Jean-Baptiste Buku lying in the big bed. For a month now she was the most powerful woman on the Liberty Islands. But in her minds eye the price for it was high. The showers she took every time he had touched her weren’t nearly enough. She picked out a black summer dress and walked up to the mirror in the bathroom. For a second double checking if Buku was still asleep.

In the mirror she didn’t see the high society woman Eliza Thábyro, she saw a shimmering image of Elizabeth Báthory. Beautiful but deadly. Her blood red eyes and dead pale skin showed her vampiric nature. As the mirror image showed her true self… and was hard to see, she had to be careful not to be caught unaware in front of it.

Doing her makeup she thought about the upcoming meeting of the League of Righteous Destroyers. It had been two months since last they came together… Two months of planning, building and scheming… Each on their own according to plan and design. Soon they will be in total control of everything in the Liberty Islands. Would the others have succeeded as well as she?

The meeting will take place at her Villa. Villa Palm was nothing more then her little retreat now that she lived most of her time in this luxury mountainside. Still she had to be back once in a while to regenerate in the desecrated soil of her homeland. She had spread rumors of her doing charity work along the countryside to explain why she had to be away so often. And indeed she was in the countryside a lot. To feed… She even turned a few handsome young men and women into vampires. Providing her with her own guard… or night army… or just to play with when she had more then she could take from the bulky body mass that was this general.

She walked up the balcony and enjoyed the view of Liberty City. The island's two volcanoes where seemingly at peace now and she wondered if Erebus had paid tribute to the fire spirits the last two months as they had requested. From the bedroom came an low grunt. Apparently the oaf was waking up. She walked back and put on her smile.

“Good morning my warlord…”, she said while giving him a small kiss. “I am going out for today… not sure how late it will get. No need to wait up for me now. Don’t you forget you have to inspect the newly arrived assault bots today.” Buku grunted again and turned around.

Elizabeth walked down the stairs. The servants where already used to the fact that she never came down for breakfast alone… ever. And weren’t even asking her anymore to sit down. In the main hall she saw her driver standing ready under a large painting of elephants. “Is the Rolls standing ready Isamu?”, she asked him. Isamu bowed slightly “Yes, immortal mistress.”, he answered.

Elizabeth put her large brimmed summer hat and her sunglasses on before walking out into the full sunlight. “Time to set up a meeting.”, she says while walking up to the car.

A swirling black cloud moved at speed towards Palm Villa. With practically no cameras or other surveillance equipment that wasn’t under the LoRDs’ control, it was liberating to be able to move around the islands as dark nature intended.

The cloud slowed, the smoky tendrils contracted and Romanov stepped from the darkness outside the Countess’ villa. He motioned to the cloud with his left hand; it billowed and swirled before forming dozens of indigenous carrion crows. They flew to perches around the property. Watching.

Romanov gently readjusted the cuff of his expensive silk shirt as the Countess’ Rolls Royce came to a halt on the white stone path in front of the villa.

A mist of darkness clouds the front door of the villa, as quickly as it had appeared, it was gone, replaced by a swirling leather coat. With the powerful stride belonging to a reknowned crimelord, Lord Barzini entered the Villa, her long dark hair flowing along behind her.

Isamu stepped out and opened the door for the countess. While Elizabeth stepped out she saw Alicia Barzini being allowed in by Hiro. Hiro was dressed as waiter for the occasion. Long sleeves covered his elaborate body tattoo’s. Then her eyes fell on Romanov.

“Alex…”, she said while holding out her hand for him to take. “It has been a long time.”

Romanov took her hand and bowed slightly. “Too long, Countess. You look enchanting as ever. Regrettable, but even here on the islands I think it is prudent that we meet only when necessary. They are not ours yet.”

He took her arm as they waked to the villa. “I believe Ms Barzini is already here. As I understand it, Lord Borealis is tying up some loose ends in the Etoile Islands so we may not see him this evening. As for the others they have been disturbingly quiet of late. You managed to send word to them of the meeting?”

The robes were a nice fit.

As he stood in front of the mirror, Lord Erebus smiled. It was a smile with absolutely no humour or humanity in it. It was the smile of a wolf who has just enjoyed picking at the bones of his foes.

The construction of the temple had gone according to plan. It was small, but neat, it’s twisting corridors leading into the heart of the volcano, deep down to… well, to somewhere very few people ever went. And even then, those who went down there didn’t come back. But the volcano was sated and those who had spoken out about the current political situation soon disappeared, their frail flesh a suitable sacrifice for the fire spirit that lived within. In return, the local spirits had proven their support for a local preacher called Father Adams, a new resident to the island who advocated a return to the native religion of the island. People had responded and now Erebus could claim to hold over seven hundred people inside his temple. As long as fresh bodies were obtained, he could keep up his guise as Father Adams forever.

Even so, he was worried. In the many centuries of his existence, Erebus had never been this public. He had learned to evade capture and banishment by most lawful mages this long by keeping his existence secret, of remaining the stuff of fairytales. Now he had a temple, and followers and it disturbed him. People were easy to manipulate but he tended to only keep them around until he was hungry and then their usefulness ended. A gentle knocking at the door interrupted his thoughts.

“Father?” came a soft voice. “The people are ready.”

Erebus smiled again. The girl was one of his younger acolytes, and quite eager. However she didn’t make friends too well and he knew that no-one would miss her. He looked forward to consuming her soul at a later date, as one would consume a juicy peach. But first, his sermon, to be followed by a meeting with his fellow conspirators.

“Of course my child,” he replied, adjusting his robe. “It’s time to spread some peace in this world of trouble. Let’s go speak to our family yes?”

Inside the large glass doors where opened... A table was set ready with a diversity of Japanese dishes... mostly made from local fish... There was a Shunde dish, Inun Unan, Shashimi and Shushi . A few meat dishes where served too. Like Hayashi raisu with rice. Hiro obviously had outdone himself.

He showed Alicia her chair and quickly ran back to the door. When he saw Elizabeth and Romanov he bowed deep. "All is in readiness, immortal mistress.", he said.

Elizabeth had a seat on the head of the table. Her chalice with her family crest filled with fresh blood. Hiro offered the seat on the right of her to Romanov.

Romanov took the seat offered to him and nodded in appreciation of his hostess’ hospitality. He then nodded a greeting to Pistol.

“As Erebes is already on the islands I’m sure he will not keep us waiting long. I don’t think there is need to delay our discussion any longer as I have other things to attend to on the islands while I am here.”

A newspaper appeared before him. “I am sure you have seen the Inquirer’s coverage of Buku in print and on the internet. Things are going as planned. I’m sure we will begin to see evidence of international pressure to resolve things through peaceful means very soon.” He smiled. “Which plays right into our hands.”

He poured Barzini and himself a glass of wine before continuing. “My mentorship of the Nasris is going as planned. The girl in particular is most receptive to my influence. The father is still headstrong but he respects my advice and I don’t believe he will present much of a problem while we still require him alive.”

He looked at the two women. “Seated as I am with to such beautiful women it is with regret the conversation must me so mundane. But I must ask how your efforts on the islands are progressing?”

Elizabeth gave a wicked smile... "You’re looking at one of the most powerful women, maybe the most powerful woman on these islands at the moment.” Elizabeth pointed at the newspaper. “I have personal access to all those weapons. The oaf is leaning more and more on my council these days. And as long as in some way he believes the people are served, I can sway his decisions any way I want.”

“As far as I can tell my cover is still completely un-breached.”, Elizabeth sipped some of her chalice. “I have some doubts about this Tutu who seem to be very suspicious about me. But I have people watching him. If he finds out anything, he will get an ‘accident’.”

She looked at Romanov for a second… “Unless he is still of any importance to deals in process of course?”

“Aside of that I have spread my influence across the countryside.”, She licked some of the blood of her lips. “Several strong newly turned vampires under my control are making sure the night breed on these islands gather under me… excuse me… us.”

She slipped her shoe off and slowly rubbed Romanov across his leg under the table.

“I am getting tired of the ape though.”, she said ignoring Alicia for a moment and looking straight at Romanov.

"Apolgies for my tardiness," came the whispering tones of Lord Erebus as he was shown into the room. "My flock are very demanding of me these days. They are quite the putty in my hands."

He took a seat and ignored the obvious flirtation between two of his compatriots. Physical pleasure meant nothing to him these days.

"Now, as between us we have the military, the revolutionists and the civillians in hand, what move are we to make next on our pretty little chess board?"

Alicia was in a bad mood, she ignored both the Countess and Romanov entirely. "My men have done thier job, most of the islanders are rebelling and there are riots everywhere, happy? Good. Because I'm sending them home now. They've been stuck on this island for well over two months now and actually, they are of better use elsewhere. This whole operation is taking forever, the gang is getting very bored and I am getting very angry. I just need to kill someone"

Romanov nodded, his face showing no emotion. “Thank you, Lord Erebus. Countess. You have exceeded expectations in your efforts and we now find ourselves on the brink of success.”

He looked at Pistol. His anger still contained save for a darkness in his eyes. It was her he was most enthused about allying himself with and her petulant attitude perhaps showed her true self. The price of working with common criminals.

“More than two months? And how long did you set aside for the conquest of a nation? A day? A week perhaps? There are machinations in motion that began centuries ago and you take offence at a matter of weeks. Such a prize won in haste would be lost even quicker.”

He placed his hands firmly on the table. Still in control. “You have just heard from myself, Bathory and Erebus that things are progressing as we planned. And now as we reach a critical stage you will withdraw your men when they are needed most.”

He looked at her hard. “Is this a situation you think you can walk away from now? This alliance was brought about by you and believe me when I respectfully say your fate is entwined in it. Or are you really just a gangster with grand ideas that have taken her out of her depth?”

He held her gaze. "Are you drowning, Ms Barzini?"

Adam checked his tie, and his lightweight replacement limb. It wasn't anything like flesh, but with gloves and a suit, people wouldn't see any metal. Despite his minimalist role so far, Adam was hoping something big would come up, possibly warranting one of his many new creations. He glanced down at the heavy metal briefcase with the more recent files in and smiled. Impressive work, even for himself.

He opened the door himself, and walked in briskly.
"Quite sorry I'm late. I was dressing appropriately." he grimaced, gesturing to the suit and tie, and gelled down hair.
"I hope I haven't missed anything of interest?"

Posted

Alicia glared into Romanov's dark eyes, an intense moment of silence suffocated the room, suddenly, the door opens to reveal Adam and the female crimelord's instincts took over. In the blink of an eye, she'd produced two jet black Uzi's from a puff of darkness. One was raised at the newcomer's head, the other at Romanov. "We aint on the Rogue right about now Rom. I pop you one and nobody'd give a sh*t" Pistol spat, her Italian-American accent ever so evident. "Lemme tell you something mister big shot, you ***** like a spoilt, skinny little schoolboy and I damn well know that tongue of yours can be real sweet when it needs to be, so when you speak to me, it really better be f*cking sweet. I put this team together and I can call it off when and if I sense it going off. Now you go on and finish this f*cking meeting. We understand each other, you manipulative little pri*k?"

Elizabeth who was just looking in disbelieve at Barzini, turned around for a second when she heard Adam enter. "I believe you entered at just the right time..."

Lord Erebus just sat at the table, smiling to see the wolf loose her cool. Such displays of emotion amused him. He'd seen quite a few reactions similar on his previous victims. It hadn't mattered, he'd eaten them anyway whether they fought him or pleaded.

"Alicia, put the guns down," he said with a tiresome tone to his voice. "All you are doing is holding us up and marking yourself as a troublemaker. A troublemaker the rest of this group may not tolerate. Even if you did manage to kill both of your targets, do you really think the rest of us would let you live?"

His gaze bore down on her as one might stare at an appetising steak. She looked pretty to him but her soul smelt rancid. He preferred them untainted and hers was anything but.

"I concur. However, Miss Alicia is part of our little club... I'd be more than happy to arrange a temporary time out until you have sufficiently calmed down?" he said, smiling politely with a look in his eye that was anything but.
"Once we are done with the current topic, anyway," he said, switching back to business "I have some designs for tools that could potentially help our conquest of this backwater island."

Romanov watched Pistol’s pantomime with interest. Like a parent watching a child forget her words in the school play and resort to a tantrum.

The attempts of the others to calm the situation were irrelevant. Only Barzini’s words and actions in the next moments would decide if she lived or died.

The carrion crows around the villa chattered and ruffled their feathers. Falling from the trees they took on the form of men long dead. They held their position in the shadows.

His surface was still glacier calm. “I don’t know what you have loaded in those guns, Alicia, but if you’re under any impression they can kill me you are seconds away from being sorely disappointed.”

He placed his hand on the table. The wood began to blacken. Warp and rot. Within seconds it crumbled to dust.

Romanov stood. “My gift is to put things together as I have with the elements of our plan. But I am also blessed with an understanding that…things fall apart.”

He rubbed the black dust beneath his fingers, letting it fall to the floor. “I asked you if you were drowning. You’ve given your answer. Now you have a choice take my hand offered in one final gesture of comradeship or turn and run like a dog.”

Elizabeth kept her cool and descided to stay in the background a bit. Maybe everyone would kill each other.

Around the villa a few unusual smart bats arrived, a few miles down the road a crypt slowly opened. Night fell and brought in reinforcements.

Just outside of the villa, dozens of Alicia's gang were closing in, bringing news of an unwelcomed guest on the island. They suddenly took to arms at the sight of vampires and zombies positioned around the building. Inside, adrenaline was pumping furiously through Alicia, she clutched tightly at her guns and shifted her aim from Adam to Lord Erebus. "That a threat Erebus?" she spat, a crazed look on her face. "This some kinda conspiracy? You people trying ta muscle me out of my own initiative? Huh? Win the world without me? Hmm? All'aya gonna try and kill me now, right? Well I got news for you," she paused and her eyes turned jet black, the colour of her possessed soul. "I'm already dead!"

The gunshots could be heard from outside the house, birds scuttled out of the trees, rustling the leaves as they took to the skies, frightened. Alicia had directed a round of steel-reinforced ammunition at Romanov.

Romanov concentrated. Focusing the forces of entropy. Of decay. Death. The speeding bullets corroded in the air, ravaged by a reddish brown cancer. The flakes of rust fluttered like ash from a funeral pyre eight feet from their target.

His jaw tightened. Still calm but ready to kill.

“There is no conspiracy, Barzini, none that we are not all a part. You are the one who has voiced a wish to undermine our efforts just as they come to fruition. You are the one who has brought violence to this meeting. You are the one who must answer for you actions.

“I saw so much promise in you. Let me tell you this; it is not the size of your slice of the pie that matters it’s how big the pie gets. Do you understand? We can only achieve our goal together. And a seventh share of that is more valuable that all of nothing. But I am one breath away from wanting to this world to burn rather than see you rule any part of it.”

He looked to Erebus. Bathory. XV. When his gaze returned to Barzini, his two most loyal servants had materialised in front of Pistol. Blackened skin tight over bone. The blades of their swords at her throat.

“The Dire Wolf and Iron Dragon always watch over me, Pistol. But I had thought the threat would come from other quarters.”

He paused, taking in the senses of the zombies in the shadows outside. “Your men are outside. I suspect they are as rash as their mistress and are about to engage my zombies and the Countess’ servants. And that will be the end of things. And you will wish for the comfort of the grave before this night it out.”

He looked at her, brushing the rusty remnants of her bullets from his expensive sleeve. “I will ask you one more time. Lay down your guns and rejoin this alliance. Sit so that we can turn our energies on those we would conquer rather than each other. What do you say, Barzini?”

"Sorry to interrupt, but may I sugggest you all redeploy your minions elsewhere? I think there may be some people who are just a little suspicious at the sight of a horde of zombies, vampires and gangbangers outside a "normal" villa..." Adam said, although it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"I say..." Alicia began, a swirl of darkness emanating from her feet. "...***** you! ***** all'aya!" and then she was gone. She materialized outside the villa, surrounded by vampires, zombies and her own gunmen. "Boss, we got a problem" said on of the gunmen, "its the Priest, he's here!"

Alicia took a few seconds to absorb the information, but her fact soon turned from shock to excitement. "Well, its about time" she whispered. "You lot stay here and keep the Lords occupied. I can't have them interfering with this. God, its like f*cking house of the living dead out here, any sign of trouble, rain on these freaks, got that?" "Got it boss" a man replied, and then Alicia was gone.
