Calling All Grav/Psi Domi-'s

Hey there, i just rolled a grav/psi domi last night, cuz i fancies doing something with the /psi set and well i've done most've the other control primaries to death.
Im only lvl9, but already ive begun to spot a few (potential) teething problems, so i thought id have a look on the forums for some ideas on the build etc and i notice there are are hardley any posts which relate to Grav/Psi and specifically the synergy between these two sets
Now, this tells me that either; a) There is something severley wrong with putting these two sets together and i should cease and decist immediatley, b) All Grav/Psi's are introverted reclusives who completely shun the forums (my favourite option ), or, c) Grav/Psi is perhaps a combo which hasn't been used as much as the others, and as such its potential still lays somewhat untapped by the FoTM brigade (love u people btw).
Ofcourse i could play this character to lvl50 to find out for myself. But the whole point of asking this question is to save myself the frustration of putting alot of time into a toon that just aint happening.
So, please post here any and all information on Grav/Psi's you got, ta muchly.

Psi' really builds much later on and around a few big keystones such as Drain Psyche and Psychic Shockwave.

I have an Ice/Psi and a Grav/Psi at lowbieish levels and what I noticed is that Psi' seems pretty quick, fluid and dynamic, and will require getting into melee and close range with multiple enemies fast to maximise those keystone powers that are Pbaoe/aoe, and that that seems to sync really well with the amount of quick control with something like Ice, whereas Grav', compared to the other sets I've experienced to varying levels (to 50 on some, just mid and lowbie on others), seems a little more clunky to wield and seems a bit more cautious in locking down the AoE control to set you up into using those great Psi' powers.

Wormhole, Drain Psyche, Shockwave I guess will be a regular chain?

I think the pair will work ok together but it's gonna take a while getting to a level where they really sync off each other. And I don't think it'll be a whirlwind of control and assault that some other sets and combinations will be.
Grav', to me so far, looks like it's going to lack a little bit of AoE hard/soft control that other sets offer in spades.
With Ice you have Slick, Fire, Flashfire, Mind gives you A whole bunch via Terrify, Mass Hypnosis, Mass Confusion, Plant gives you 'Creepers and Seeds Of Confusion. All really nice quick tricks to maintain mob control beyond the holds and immobs and opportunities to bring the really good stuff in Psi into play.

Grav' seems a lot more clunky and I think in my view generally much more single target orientated. And much more methodical. I think it'll still work out as a combination and I intend to carry on levelling my own Grav/Psi, as above all, it's pretty fun .

I have a Grav/psi dom and can safetly say it is one of my favourites to play. With the mass hold and slows it's easier at higher lvls to combine the psi attacks into it. I avoided all the melee ranged attacks myself from the Psi set, Except for psi shockwave which is what i use when something closes to melee with me.

Things change with the singualirty and using the AoE psi attacks as you'll have alot more control over mobs, As the singularity is another grav dom nearly. It's good fun and worth investing time into it but thats my personal opinion, Damage wise it's not so hot but it does have a good advantage of ignoring most defenses with Psi attacks. Only real suggestion i can offer is try avoiding the slow animation attacks, For example propel although real fun is very slow.

Hope ya have fun with it.

You've pretty much hit my main concern on the head there mate. It seems with Grav u gotta wait till u can get ur AoE Hold (lvl24 is it?) till u have anyway of mezzing a group of enemies (i dont know, but i bet the rechg on it is mammoth), sure you get wormhole later on, which im assuming can be slotted for disorientation, but thats later on and i dont wanna have to get a toon to lvl30+ before i can start having some fun with it.
I have Ice, Fire, and Earth trollers and as you've pointed out these sets all offer many different control options right from the word go pretty much.Whereas Grav seems to substitute some early aoe control powers for some fairly average (if somewhat fun) single target dmg.I mean, Jeez! Im only lvl10, but if you include my vet reward powers i got 7 single target attacks of mod. dmg. and only two control powers (my single target immob and hold- cant remeber the names sorry) and that all seems a bit backward considering that a Dom's primary is control, oh well. I was trying to go for something new, but im starting to remember why i always fall out with every grav toon i've made

I do also have a mind/psi at a simulart lvl and ive never really explored the mind control set properly, so i guess ill play the two characters and see which suits me best.

hmmm.. Mind/Psi, Grav/Psi, theres just too much choice in this game for people like me

Oh and thx for your reply aswell Devil. Im not so sure id want to go down the route of avoiding the melee powers in the Psi set as they seem to be really tasty and worth making use of. Although you make a valid point on the Singularity compensating for the lack of control in the primary set. However u gotta wait till lvl32 before you can take it and as ive already mentioned im looking for something with a bit more instant gratification this time round. But thanks for your thoughts, muchly appreciated.

You are missing an AoE soft control at low levels, and early on that is gonna hurt, especially when other Dom's of comparative level are sleeping or confusing mobs.
Propel is an animation hog. Worse than that, the animation is cool, so even though it's a pain in the [censored] and often a detriment, we all still take the bloody thing. (I promise I will respec out of it next time. Honest!)
Last but not least, Mental blast is not great.

Alternatively . . .

Wormhole rocks my socks. You don't get it till 26, but it's the long awaited soft control you've been missing. Not only that, but it's my number one pulling tool. (Totally safe, no line of sight needed.) So yes, it’s a dual use power. (Actually three, but I’ll get to that in a second.)

I'm just getting to Psychic Shockwave (next level!) so I can't/won't comment other than to say people rave over it, and I expect it to live up to the hype.

Singularity is awesome. No, wait, lemme say that again. Fluffy little Sing is the God of rocking my socks. He is a rock hard little nutball who loves only one thing in life, messing with mobs. He does bugger all damage, but he holds and immobilises mobs just to get his giggles.
He stacks his holds with you, making Boss’s cry like babies even when Domination isn’t up. Also, he repels mobs. Don’t listen to the naysayers. They are jealous. Sing is a safe haven for the Grav dom. Too many mobs? Getting into Melee? Hide behind Sing. He’s the doorman every nightclub wants.

Drain Psyche. Can you do without Stamina if you take it? Yes, if you try to. I managed until I respec’d a couple levels ago. I now have both and I’ve not run out of Endurance once. I’ve stopped keeping blues in my Inspiration tray.

Ok, Dimension Shift – Again I say ignore the naysayers. If you take it, and look at every situation wondering how you could use it, then all of a sudden it becomes a dynamite power. (Especially solo.) It’s on a decent recharge, and needs no slotting.

This is where Wormhole comes into it’s own. Big group? Slap a wormhole on half, separate em, and DS the others. While Sing and you tear half of the confused ones to pieces, the others are locked. By the time they get out of that, you’ve put at least one mob down, probably two, and are about ready for em. If not, that’s what your AoE hold is for. (If the mobs were too close to begin with, swap and do DS first, then Wormhole. Practice makes purrfect.) Also, if you Wormhole half to the other side of Sing, then the other guys have to get past him to get to you, and that is not easy.
Too many mobs around the boss? DS him. Unless you slotted it to hit him, it won’t. Chances are it will take out all the other mobs round him though. You can have him half way down easy before they pop out again, and once more, AoE hold while you rearrange the rest of his dental work.
It’s also the ultimate “Fark!” button for when things are just not salvageable. I’ve saved groups with this. Conversely, misuse it, and groups will not appreciate it. Nobody likes to wait for it to wear off. (Practice, practice, practice.) It’s not a [censored] power, it’s just not so blindingly simple that anyone can come along and expect to automatically use it well. It takes a bit of effort.

My last comment referring to a post further up: You will regret not taking Mind Probe. It’s one of the most damaging attacks of the set. Sing will want to be near the mobs, and it’s in your interests to be near him. This puts you in dancing range of mobs.

Wow someone else who likes DS

I use it differently to you though. DS is my ultimate panic button. I have a couple of binds set up to warn the team its being used. I do slot it, I want it to hit everything when I fire it because I'm using it as a last resort. DS is one of the only powers in the game that you can increase it's magnitude with slotting. With 3 Intang Enhances + Domination you can actually make AVs intangible

Grav/Psi is a rewarding combo to play and as others have said it really is a late bloomer. The unmissable powers imo are wormhole, the aoe hold, sing, mind probe, drain psyche and the best of the lot; Psi shockwave.

I only play my dom in a team and can imagine that grav/psi would be a frustrating toon to solo especially against psi resistant mobs. In a team you will have loads of fun controlling the battlefield then running into melee, hitting drain psyche and spamming psi shockwave like a madman.

Edit - Oh and why oh why would you get Propel for a Dominator for anything other than comic value?

And a fair use it is. Have mine slotted with just the one accuracy. While I don't want it hitting boss's and up, I do want it hitting as many of the grunts as I can to seperate the herd.

Propel - I can't really defend it, as much as I feel I want to. For those who have yet to try it, it really is achingly slow. Ok, for those times you are against PSI resistant mobs, then you have another source of damage, but that's it. Those rare instances and the, "Wow, look at me I threw a toilet at someone" factor, are really the only reasons, and that just doesn't cut it.

As Mr Minotaur above me says though, it really is a rewarding set to play, and when it does come into its own, you start to find so many possible tactics to use.

"Calm down dear its just Dimension Shift"

If we see this in our team text box then we know that either Blind Minotaur is about to faceplant or we aggroed a second spawn again - with someone else about to faceplant

My Grav/Psi is a stage magician. I chose Grav' as it seemed to have more hooks for conjuring tricks than Mind' which I guess would be the other obvious choice. But levitating stuff, throwing stuff around, and teleporting stuff with wormhole just seemed a lot more fun and characteristic of the toon.

So, of course, I HAVE to take Propel, for the conjuring of random objects from a hat. No rabbits as yet... CURSES!

Definitley. It's a bread and butter attack for sooo many levels. It's to /Psi what Skewer is to /Thorns. Don't skip it!
