How's this Mind/Psi Dominator look?

Well I've currently played him to level 15 and I'm loving every minute of it, but of course plans must be made for later levels.

Here's the current build I'm working with that was adapted from a perma-dom build, IO free for now though:

My biggest concern at the moment is with my slotting levels: I'm worried I'm leaving them too late with some critical powers.

So, if you have any tips or advice for this build, I'd appreciate it!

Your power selection is great, no problems there. However I'd take another look at the order in which you get some powers.

Mass Hypnosis will save your domi behind a lot more than TK, especially at earlier levels when the amount of AoE control/damage you can put out is really low. This is especially true if you solo a lot. The duration and recharge of Mass Hypno simply can't be beat and since all of your attacks until Psy Scream are single target, you can sleep a whole mob then one by one, add stronger controls or just take them out.

TK also suffers from that massive endurance cost, you won't get much out of it without Drain Psyche, Stamina or both in your reportoire first.

Posted

Hmmm, so what if I was to swap Telekinesis' place in the build with mass hypnosis' and move slots around accordingly? Do you think that would work better?

Posted

Whose build did you adapt it from? I look at both power choices and slotting and squirm some but then I don't know your intentions. Mind Probe has a range of 5 feet. 5 feet? WTH am I doing there? Also as a Dom I builds dam and survivability with control and some ST controls may work out better DPS than some of the attacks in the Assault secondary. Mind probe wouldn't interest me.

He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.

A Dominator without melee attacks is half a Dominator. The damage of Mind Probe will exceed the damage of any control power by a mile.

Posted

Agreed, Dominators are a ranged/melee mixed class like Blasters, love it or hate it. Once you get Psy Shockwave you'll find yourself in melee range a whole lot anyway.

---

As for power choices, I would swap them around to something like this:

12: Mass Hypnosis
16: Health
22: TK/Stamina
24: TK/Stamina
30: Psy Scream

Psy Scream is the least useful of all those powers, since the only thing it does is damage. It works well with Terrify, but Terrify is actually better in almost every aspect (the damage is near identical too).

As for slotting, I would recommend slotting Mesmerize and Dominate heavilly and slot them for damage, not control. They recharge so fast there's no point in adding mez duration in there after you reach SOs. Mesmerize is especially handy as it will sleep a bozz in one hit without Domination even running.

Also, slot Terrify for damage, it needs no fear duration at all and it'll be your bestest AoE attack until you get PSW.

Oh yeah, and with TK in your build you might want to conider putting endmods into Drain Psyche instead of heals. Anything to keep TK going while you're fighting that EB/AV!

That's all I can think of right now. Hope it helps.

Mind Probe will be *the* bread and butter attack for a lot of levels, and as mentioned, with PSW, and Drain Psyche, etc, a /Psi Dom' is gonna be happiest in that melee range and in the thick of it.

Posted

Not sure about Hurdle and Combat jumping and why the places they are at.

I'm guessing if you took this from an IO planned build, CJ was probs there for an LOTG recharge. Maybe.

But I don't see any use for them in your build here.

Posted

Yep, taken for LOTG. Think I'll replace those with some more Soul mastery powers, just for fun

Right then, had another whack at the build based on all the very helpful suggestions I've recieved

My only problem at the mo is finding the slots to shove in mesmerize. I could take them out of dark embrace, but wouldn't that then be very late game?

Also, the soul mastery powers are there for kicks. Feel free to suggest better alternatives.

If your going to spend time in melee then Aid self is useful (when your not caught by a mezz aoe on a brute or something pre perma domination). Having to Aid self takes seconds that will have a counter effect on dps. I have not seen many/any melee doms without aid self.

If you're looking for slots for Mesmerize...

You can certainly get away with only two slots in Confuse (2xAcc) and the range from Mass Hypnosis, while nice, is by no means a priority. You should be able to get rid of 1-2 recharge from TK, though that depends how often you want to use it. Subdue doesn't necessarilly need an immob slot either.

(Quite late to this thread, but here goes, anyway)

I kinda go with what Shannon said earlier - I have no space for Mind Probe on my Level 28, but then I do have Sands of Mu set on Auto And like Echo, I thoroughly endorse Terrify. Sadly the mobs do not exactly "tremble uncontrollably" as it says on the tin (they are prone to shoot and thump every now and again) but they are locked down for the most part, and Terrify + Psychic Scream, used together, wreaks an awful lot of havoc. I love Mind/Psi.

What about the very nice 50% rech debuff from psi scream?

And it would be a total shame not taking mind probe indeed. Dom's will perform at their best moving constantly and combining melee and range. Like blasters.
And when you play it hard AND smart (either solo or teamed) there's no real need for aid self, although admittedly handy at times.
