Wanted: PVP guide for Defender

Good people

Having gotten Proton Rush, my kin/rad defender to the big five-ho, I've decided to turn him into my main PVP toon. Given that I've got quite limited experience with PVP and no dedicated toons, I'd be really interested in build guides, slotting and sets etc, as well as experiences so that I can try and turn him into something worthy of the PVP name.

Cheers

PvP Hints to start out regarding your Build ~

1) Plan your build to be one step ahead of what your going to be facing. For example, you will be targeted by stalkers as you are a "squishy". Try to pick up some form of protection from Assassin strikes, on your build this comes in 3 forms... (a)+ perception of some kind(tactics), (b)Repel(knockback) and (c)unsupressed movement.
*********
(a) This is not guaranteed, with more and more stalkers acquiring stacking stealth and tactics will not allow you to see all stealthed foe's.

(b) This is a handy power from your kinetic tree, takes up endurance all the same and KB protection is a pvp must. Many foe's would have preempted this move.

(c) Your best bet for avoiding being struck... Constant movement, and with access to Inertial Reduction you can be one of the only Hero's on map that has unsuppressed movement...

My advice is to think carefully about what you will come up against in a pvp zone and build your Hero around that...

Consider things like...

Stealthed Foes
To Hit Debuffs
Holds and Slows
Hugely resistant enemy's like brutes and MM's
Teleport Foe
Etc

Best of Luck bringing those villains to justice, ...

Rad Blast is too good for PvP

A kin/rad defender can be a great team pvp toon. However on a 1vs1 situation and solo zonal try not to get furstrated.

The Rad blast guide from OVWX is a great place to start regarding powers.

What you really need is a kinetics guide for PvP and especially one for offending i guess rather than just team PvP.

I ll try make a couple of builds one orientated more for solo and offending and another for buffing to get an idea later today.

Sorry but no it doesnt work that way. First priority is what you want to do with your build

Solo PvP,Team PvP,Arena or zonal. From there on once you figure this out you need to balance out strengthening your build to areas that will provide you with enough to do what you aim for.

If we follow this kind of advice Scarlet might as well get Repel and gimp the build right from start.

My advice is to stop thinking like that because that is not a good tactic.

What build are you looking for, SO, IO etc? What also, type of PvP do you aim to participate in, team/solo?

Like TG said, I would focus on a team orientated build, as you really do not have the damage to be able to solo anything in PVP. I personally would focus most my attention on the Kinetics powers first and then get some short animating powers from Rad Blast that can contribute to mezzing and debuffing defense.

From Kinetics I would take everything but Repel and Inertial Reduction(although this might still be handy, if you have the room for it)

I know nothing about Rad Blast, but I would focus on powers that are ranged, animate fairly quickly and either do Mez or a decent debuff effect. I'd get Aim and Cosmic Burst for sure and maybe Neutrino Bolt and X-ray Beam to destroy someones defense.

TG will probably come up with some ideas for slotting IO sets, to give you some nice bonuses. Also, take note that I11 will bring in Defense debuff sets that could make things a little more interesting for your build as well.

Solo, Kinetics can be tough.

However, in the space of about 2 weeks (solid PVP) I managed to get 300 rep on my Fire/Kin Corruptor in RV, while pillboxing, due to SBing heavies

On the attack front, focus on Single Target damage, and animation times are also very important. Shoving out damage quickly over a long period of time is your best bet on a Defender, instead of short period burst damage.

On the Kinetic side of things, my tactic in a 1v1 situation was to just spam Siphon Speed, Siphon Power, and Fulcrum as much as possible (while running around the slowed target) until all debuffs and buffs were at their cap, and then I started to attack. Draining endurance with 3 slotted Transference is also a great tactic for detoggling enemies.

As a Defender, you will pretty much always be targetted first, so picking Superspeed with SJ and Acrobatics will be useful. I also find Teleport great on my Defender (even if I needed to pick it for In Character reasons) for getting in and out instantly.

You want attacks which deal the most damage in the least amount of activation time. I have absolutely no idea what the above sentence means and I have read it many times, but yeah, heavy damage in short time is what you want.

They mean that as a defender you wont 3 shot them like a blaster with so you need to wear them down over time spamming attacks.

There are indeed some excellent debuff sets as well as end mod sets for i11.

well I'd not considered what "type" of PVP, but my most frequent PVP experience has been arena based but I'd like to spend more time in the zones

I'm obviously gonna have to think about that. My main experience of PVP has been with Scarlet Shocker, my elec/elec/elec but I've never been very successful, primarily because I want her to be more "general"

I'll be slotting with IOs, primarily sets. (I already have many of them)

I'm not really doing this to to get an "uber PVP rep" but rather to spend marginally more time having fun in the PVP zones and arena than being face down or in the medical facilities

you have 16 points of kb protection which should protect against everything but force bolt.
