It's a good build, and has a leg up on my lvl 43 SS/FA Brute as I've not sat down and worked out what Invention Sets I am going to be using. Otherwise our builds are fairly similar except:

* I didn't take Boxing, but I am able to use Sands of Mu as a less often used substitute. I like the use of Stupify though.

* Because I didn't take the Fighting Pool I got Rise of the Phoenix at 38 and found use for it - as a SS/FA Brute in a team I find myself going in to take the alpha strike to take as big a slice of fury as possible. Usually Healing Flames carries me through, but sometimes there's something doing so much damage that all the resist in the world won't help, especially late-game AVs.

* No fighting pool means I've take all the Primary, Secondary and Pool powers I want by 38 so I am free to pick up more of Black Scorpion's goodies - looking forward to that energy cone (44), the spiderbot hair-dryer (47), and either the tier-one single-target frzat or something funny like TP Foe at 49.

* Web Envelop - fantastically useful for SS/FA. Fire at mob, jump in, drop Burn and a Footstomp, Knock-out Blow the biggest chap, let Blazing Aura and the SS happy-slapping powers weed everything else out. I've got it slotted 1 acc 1 immob 1 end, but I'm looking at possibly chucking an immob set in since the recipies are likely to be cheap (even if the salvage isn't for rare sets).

I think you're going in the right direction by slotting multiple sets in one power for maximum stat enhancement in the Resistance powers. Have you considered dropping parts of PBAoE sets into Consume? I'm looking at some acc, recharge components and a few plain End Mods... until Issue11 comes out with End Mod sets.

The only thing I question (apart from the intimidating number of lvl 53 enhancements) is the use of "Doctored Wounds - Heal" in Rise of the Phoenix and Health. This is an influence-expensive option compared to a lvl 50 Heal IO which will more or less do the same thing.

Good inspiration for me to look at my Brute and work out what needs to be done to make it a modern set-wielding juggernaut of destruction. I look forward to seeing ToHit Sets and End Mod sets in i11 to see where SS/Fire goes in the future.

Additional Note: if you get the resistance set "Steadfast Protection" enhancement "+Knockback Protection" be sufficient to drop Leaping: Acrobatics for Fighting: Weave, or taking Hasten a few levels earlier, or shuffling up some of the Primary or Secondary powers to take advantage of the empty power slot?

Or to put the question another way - would you sacrifice a slot and a wedge of Influence for +4 Mag knockback res, or a power slot for a +2 Mag knockback res?

Acrobatics is +100 mag KB

Whoops, my mistake - I was looking at the Hold mag resistence. Cheers!

Makes it a more difficult question. Is mag 4 knockback enough, or would it also be worth it (or even possible) to slot Combat Jumping with defensive set Karma: Knockback Res to stack up to +8 Mag resist? Or bite the bullet and run Acrobatics? I have the space for Acrobatics and don't really have anything better to put in place other than Hurl which I've found I never needed (SJ + KoB has a better not to mention funnier effect).

I looked at Healing Flames: not sure 3 enhancements from Doctored Wounds and Numina's are cost effective: though you gain 12% regen from the first Numina set bonus and a roughly 20% end reduction I've found Healing Flames is quite cheap - at lvl 40 it'd be saving 2 endurance.

Instead you can *save a slot* by slotting 3x Heal/Rech from any of the sets that run up to lvl 40, an End IO and a Heal IO for the same bonuses heal/recharge bonuses +/- 3%. It'll probably be cheaper in influence and you can swap either of the IOs for the Numina version once you raise the funds to get that sweet +12% bonus. If you can't afford Invention sets in the mean time you can probably get away with 3x rech, 2x heal to carry you over until you have the money.

I'm a late comer to the Invention Set party - the first toon I went to town on with them was my En/En blaster, and that's really quite easy given the amount of six-slotted primaries I have.

I run a Karma and a Steadfast on my /Fire brute and I dont find it too bad but some AVs and EBs can still knock you all over the place

Here's another question - what's the effect of slotting Scirocco's Dervish: Chance for Lethal Damage (20%) in Blazing Aura? Is the proc calculated per tick? I ask because I am looking at slotting:

Cleaving Blow: Acc/Dam, Dam/End
Multi-Strike: Dam/End, Acc/End, Acc/Dam/End

Cleaving Blow can be swapped out for equivalent Scirocco's Dervish for the first set bonus, +10% Regen.

At lvl 40 this gives roughly Acc 67%, Dam and End 87%. Is it worth slotting SD: Chance for Lethal for 20% chance of extra lethal damage not affected by ED, or to add Scirocco's: Acc/Dam/End for: Acc 84% Dam and End 96%?

I think its every 10 seconds but I could be wrong. It seems fairly often where I have that set on my blaster as least

I'd go for the Acc/Dam/End though

TBH I find chance of lethal damage useless... not only because it is very low DPS, but also because as Smashing Damage, I'd rather have something less resisted than lethal...

And as for why I picked Boxing, it's only for tough... without it I get killed a lot faster, and slotted for the +recharge to all powers from Stupefy.

I have an energy/fire at 38. Some comments:

Combat jumping - totally agree
Acrobatics - yep
Blazing Aura - eats through minions - I'm going for 4 Scirrocco's (acc/dam, dam/rec, dam/end, acc/dam/end, and 2 endred, but that's mainly because I only have a single slot in stamina
Consume - I went 3 recred, 2 acc and 1 endmod, as it seems to miss a lot even with BU active
Healing flames - I going for 5 from Miracle (missing out end/rec, the +revovery unique might be a bit hard / expensive to get)

UNION @Flitz 50, Lead Hose 50, Red Rag 50
DEFIANT Rose Bloodthorn 34
VIGILANCE Captain Caledonia 20 - Yeah, I made toons on the French server coz we only had 4 back then (might have to transfer/recreate them on one of the US servers)
..and many more!

Healing Flames - you can 5-slot them:

Harmonized Healing: Heal/Recharge
Miracle: Heal/Recharge
Doctored Wounds: Heal/Recharge
IOs: 1x Heal, 1x Recharge

Gives Heal and Recharge 96.53% with lvl 40 enhancements. Set bonuses can be acquired by swapping out the IOs for equivalent set enhancements. I don't think you can get as high Heal and Recharge by homogenous set slotting.

I'd *really* find two more slots for Stamina, especially if you are running Fire Shield, Plasma Shield, Blazing Aura, and potentially Acrobatics.

Posted

Or if Healing Flames has 6 slots you can tuck in Steadfast Protection: Knockback in addition to the above slotting so you don't have to add an extra slot to another resistance power.

My build, using stitched together pieces of sets to squeeze maximum enhancement out of the PBAoEs, resistance and healing whilst trying to duck under the hood of ED.

I could swap out the Resist IO in each res toggle for Aegis: Res/End - won't really be sure if it's worth sacrificing a few shreds of resistance for endurance until I play the build a bit.

Sadly - no slots spare for punch or boxing. I also cut out Hasten to make space for the Fighting pool.

Thats a whole lot of set bonus but do you not think that by slotting this way you will gimp your brute for power and how long he will last in a fight?

My SS/FA brute has a mix of normal IOS, HO and a few set bonus but if i was to slot him with the sets you have done here he would be very underpowerd and squishy, just because you get a set bonus does not mean its better than the % incress you would get slotting normal IOs. Set bonus is not everything and there no good to you if your dead.

In short - no.

A slightly longer and less brash answer is: no, I hope that slotting in complete sets on core attack powers (e.g. footstomp, knockout blow) and picking set-pieces for toggles, pbaoes and self healing will improve both effect and longevity of my Brute.

In particular I'm pretty happy with how the endurance consumption is looking off my core 3 toggles (Fire Shield, Plasma Shield, and Blazing Aura). Not running Acrobatics will hopefully also contribute to endurance.

Ironically the set bonuses are a handy side effect compared to the enhancement bonuses I'll be getting set against traditional slotting.

Where possible I've tried to use uncommon invention sets because they tend to give better enhancement bonuses due tonot having to make room for a proc. I'm avoiding using HO's due to the potential expense or difficulty of picking up the right drops. I've not been playing nearly as long as you therefore don't have a small warehouse full of the blighters.

I'd like to see your build for comparison and inspiration.
